    1. [WILCOX] Wilcox North Stonington, CT area and somewhere in NY
    2. I'm (still) trying to find Gardner Wilcox's parents. My hunch is that he is connected somehow to William Wilcox of North Stonington, CT and the line that goes to Edward Wilcox. Gardner N. Wilcox (Willcox) Born 5-20-1825 in New York (but where?) Died 12-27-1883 in Preston, CT (buried in Poquetanuck, CT) Blacksmith (on 1868 Beers map in Poquetanuck, Preston, CT) Son of: Gardner Wilcox and Nabby Eccleston (married December 1815 per Norwich Courier) Married: 1) Hannah Spicer, born 4-22-1829, died 9-16-1859 Daughter of Eldridge Spicer and Lydia G. Stanton of Noank, CT Children: Ellen Wilcox (age 10 mo. in 1850 census - is the E. in Josephine "Ellen" or is this another child?) Josephine E. Wilcox, born 1849, died 1881 Married Edward N. Steere Ervaett W. Wilcox born 1858 died 7-8-1863 (age 5) Married: 2) Emeline Spicer, born 5-20-1842, died 8-2-1883 (age 41) Daughter of Eldridge Spicer and Lydia G. Stanton Married about 1861 Children: William Gardner Wilcox, born 8-20-1862, Died 8-2-1897(age 34) Poquetanuck, CT Charles N. Wilcox, born 3-10-1866 Died 1-30-1867 age 10 months, 17 days Married: 3) Hattie E. Hall, born 9-1850, died 12-17-1879 (died age 29, Gardner was 54) She was age 17 in 1867 She is buried with a son aged 9 weeks. Nabby (Abigail) Eccleston (Gardner N. Wilcox's mother) Born 11-30-1797? (where?) (age 20 in 1818) Died (when? where?) Married December 1815 Gardner Wilcox Daughter of Ichabod Eccleston, Jr. and Ruth Geer (Ichabod died in Sackett's Harbor, NY 12-26-1814 War of 1812) Married 12-22-1787 Sister Rebecca Eccleston (born before 1796 in Norwich) married Stephen Wilcox (son of ?) Gardner Wilcox Born Died Son of Both Gardner Wilcox and Ruth Eccleston (Nabby's mother) appear in the 1820 and 1822 Griswold censuses only. They are not in any other census in NY, CT, or RI. I found their marriage announcement in the December 1815 Norwich Courier. Also married the same day were Nabby's sister Lucinda Eccleston (married William Eccleston) and Persia, Persis, Pamela (?) (difficult to read) Eccleston (married Park Woodward). I know there were several other Gardner WIlcox's in CT, NY, RI, and Nova Scotia, but none match up with what I know to be true. People from Preston went to Beekman, NY, Minisink, NY and Preston and Norwich, NY. Any help or possible clues would be appreciated. Marcia Richardson

    3. So you think the Wilcox-L has 'gone dead'? Me too. I wonder how anyone can find their ancestors if they sit there and look at a blank screen when they could be typing a query to see if any of us are researching their line, or know anything about it. I am researching Pleasant Wilbox b ca 1790-91 in Va, parents unknown. Removed to Christian Co KY in early 1800's (said to have left home at about age 15) and we find him in Christian Co on the 1820 census, but he was there earlier. He married Fannie Adams d/o James Adams and Elizabeth Hatcher and by 1843-44 they removed to Wayne Co MO. They had: Edward Randolph, Thomas James, George W., John G or Q, Nathan Adams, William Berry (my ancestor), David Monroe (died in Civil War), Henry C Wilcox. Edward Randolph is in Mercer Co MO by 1850 and remains there. If you are on this site, post your queries and let's get some communication going. How many are researching a Wilcox line in New England? How many in VA, KY, TN, AL, MO, OK. Hello.... 3. Sandra, This isn't the first time I have heard people wondering why we want to know about 'dead people'. I guess we have to overlook these people and move onto the next person that will help us 'preserve our family histories'. If people didn't keep things, say things, maintain Bible records and keep those OLD PICTURES, we would of never, ever had history in school!! Genealogy is a walk-back in time, and a history lesson to anyone that undertakes finding our long, lost ancestors. I am beginning to think that a lot of oldtimer Wilcox's like to 'keep things' under their hats, however. Mine were either cloned, or hadn't hatched yet, because some are sure hard to find. And I know a lot of tricks to finding people, too, and still can't latch onto them. 3. Illinois WILCOX RESEARCHERS. If you want to find marriage data on Wilcox's that married between 1763-1900 in IL go to http://www2.sos.state.il.us/cqi-bin/marriage, or go into http://www.usgenweb.com, state of IL and once there go down to Illinois Genealogy Research Aids and click on Sate of IL Archives Database IRAD. That will take you into the 1763-1900 IL marriage records. There you input the surname, or the surname and the given name of the person and click on submit query. Kathy Kapetanakis, I hope this data will be of some assistance to you below. I have printed the 11 pages of the Wilcox's that married in IL between 1763-1900 (IF Illinois had the data, it is on this site) and this is what I found for Henderson Co IL: Elisha S Wilcox m Ann E Mills 9/1/1852 Frederick Wilcox m Sarah Fally 4/30/1899 Hamilton Wilcox m Louisa Winfield 8/10/1851 Samuel Wilcox m Catharine Dubois 5/28/1865 ---------- > From: George Kapetanakis <littlecaptain@email.msn.com> > To: WILCOX-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [WILCOX] TN, KY, VA > Date: Wednesday, June 21, 2000 7:01 AM > > Kay, Well, I really don't know much at all. 1. [WILCOX] JOSEPH WILCOX/EMMA OR EMILINE DOWELL

    3. Kathy, Don't feel too bad about not talking to your dad that much about your ancestors. I didn't talk to my Granddaddy Wilcox either (he died in 1977, born 1887) and mother (which is her father) and I could kick ourselves for not asking more questions when we had the opportunity. HOWEVER, granddady never talked about his Wilcox relatives either and we don't think it was particularly because there may have been a family feud, or he didn't like this person or that person, but because once they moved away from family and 'couldn't call home', or 'couldn't write like we do today', they just lost contact with their loved ones. Based on the data you gave me below, it will be easier for me to go into certain sites and do my thing and see if I can help you, rather than try to explain it here. If anyone has an 1850 KY Federal Census book handy, or knows where 'on the Web' we can look at the 1850 KY census, either tell us here, or be so kind as to look up Dowell in KY, and tell us the counties the Dowell's (all of them) were in. Couldn't be that many. If Joseph Wilcox married Emma/Emiline Dowell in Henderson Co IL in 1904, then I would see if you can put your hands on an 1880, or 1900 census of IL in those years, checking for a Wilcox and a Dowell in Henderson Co IL and you'll probably find both their parents this way. I do this with my 1850 Federal Census when I have one name I am sure of and a possible surname for another. I then go back to that 1850 census and find (hopefully) the Wilcox that I am sure of (or whatever surname you are sure of) and the possible females surname you are looking for. This also has worked for me when I have children with unusual names. If I have a male Wilcox that married a female (surname unknown) and they have named a child an ususual name, I think go back to the census closest to when they married in order to hopefully find a Wilcox and a family with a surname that is like the child's unusual name. This has worked for me over and over again, and I hope that you all understand what I am trying to say. The Illinois website found on http://www.usgenweb.com, then go into the states page and click on ILL, has (or did, and probably still does) marriage data for IL. You can search by surname of man and woman, or just the man, or just the bride, or even search a bride by her unusal first name, such as Emma or Emiline and see what it finds. I love to search sites by just an unsual name because sometimes you get to where you want to a whole lot faster. Same goes if you are researching social security death records and you have someone with an ususual first or last name, then just search by that one name. I have an usual first name (Edrith....see why I go by Kay :-) ) and I have found other Edrith's in this country by just searching for just that name. Hope I've helped some.... Edrith, I mean.....Kay ---------- > From: George Kapetanakis <littlecaptain@email.msn.com> > To: WILCOX-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [WILCOX] TN, KY, VA > Date: Wednesday, June 21, 2000 7:01 AM > > Kay, Well, I really don't know much at all. 3. Kay, Well, I really don't know much at all. My father's name was Joseph Wilcox. Not much is known about him and of course I didn't ask questions when my father could remember. I get the feeling nobody liked him and so didn't talk about him much. The LDS web site tells me he was bn. abt. 1881 died 2NOV1936. He married Florence Dowell in Henderson County, Ill 20Dec 1904. My aunt thinks his father was Isaiah but I wonder if he could be the grandfather as dates for his birth are 1811? My aunt says his wife was Emma or Emiline Dowell bn.1844 in Ky. I have no idea where in Ky. See? I am so stuck. I contacted the state of Illinois and they can't find a record of his death. But I know the family lived in Illinois when he died. He could have not been there when he died. Dad said his father wasn't living at home when he died. If I could just find Joseph maybe I could link all this other wonderful information I see on the family web pages. I know this isn't any help. I grabbing at straws. Thanks for any light you may be able to shed on this.
