    2. Still trying to find ANYTHING about ELIJAH WILCOX, born 3 Apr 1818 in Essex CO, NY, married 1845 Olive Marsh Bailey, died 26 Oct 1893 in Minnesota. In 1882, his son HORTON MARSHALL WILCOX wrote from Clinton, Iowa, that he went to "Clinton [IA] where I could find some relatives on my father's side." So, do any of you out there know about Wilcoxes in Iowa who came from New York? Linda Wilcox

    3. Hi Wilcox seekers, Last month while my wife was recording info about her relatives buried in the Ontario, KS, cemetery, I found some Wilcox graves in the same cemetery. I have Wilcox forebears myself, but these do not appear to fit in my line. I photographed the headstones just in case I found some connection, and if anyone on the list recognizes the names and would like a copy of the photographs, let me know. The names on the stones are as follows: First Stone: "William T. Wilcox/1836-1920/11th Reg. Cav. Kans. Vol./Co. B Holton"; Second Stone: "Sarah M., Wife of/ W. J. Wilcox/ Died/ Aug 26, 1886/ Aged 28 YRS 8 MOS 10 DS"; Third Stone: "Martha A. Wife of/ W. J. Wilcox/ 1856-1922"; Fourth Stone: "Wilcox/ Ella R. wife of J. E. Wilcox/ Nov. 17, 1865-April 18, 1917//Ida M. dau of J.E. & Ella Wilcox/Aug. 24, 1885-Mar. 22, 1893//James E. Wilcox/Sept. 16, 1859-Mar. 26, 1912." My notes for the day also include an entry for "Genet Tem, Wife of W. J. Wilcox/Born Aug 14, 1868/Died July 16, 1890," but I have no photo for that stone. Frank Weihs, in Tacoma, WA

    3. Sorry, Peaska, but this family, as far as I have been able to find out, was not in Ohio or Indiana. Susan just kind of appears in the family out of Missouri or possibly TN. Mentioned as "Brother of DAVID". Married twice: THANKFUL WILCOX (Dec 8. 1796) and DORCAS TEFFT ( before 1839). 2. Robert Wilcox
    3. I would not think of sending the entire report FIRST GENERATION 1. Elisha Sr. WILCOX United Empire Loyalist1,2,3,2,2 was born on JUL 11 1728 in New York State. He died in 1797 in Detroit River. Shirley Benedict Willcox from Chatham Ontario in the mid 1970's traveled extensively researching the Willcox Wilcox family .On one of his visits to my home in St. Catharines prior to my retirement in 1984 he provided me with copies of much of his materiel. I understand that his son Larry did considerable research in the archives in Ottawa. Shirley suffered a stroke about 10 years ago and passed away in 1996. Elisha Wilcox's background has eluded us, however his name turns up often in the archives of Ontario and the American Colonies. I can only conclude that Elisha Wilcox was a very common name in that era 1700 to 1800. In a geneolagy paper written by Shirley Wilcox in 1987 he suggests that an Elisha was born July in 1728 a son of Elisha and Mary Leech Willocks He married Amy------ about 1774 and they settled in Thorn Bottom in Nicholson Township, Wyoming county Pa. Some researchers asume that he was killed at the Battle of Wyoming others believe that he was taken prisoner and ended up in Niagara On the Lake and from there to Essex County Some time some place the whole story may be revealed. An Elisha Wilcox was taken prisoner at the Battle of Wyoming in Pa. Some researchers think that he was killed at that Battle. His name then turns up as a member of Butlers Rangers. Note that it was the Butlers Rangers who provoked the Wyoming Battle. It was a massacre much like the one in Cherry Valley. Elisha's name is recorded as a member of Butlers Rangers, 1779 to 1783. Elisha settled on lot 23 Colchester Township Essex County Ontario had at least 6 sons. Elisha jr. Hezakiah Morris James Asa and a daughter Saraha joined him in Detroit in 1787. These family names often appear in documents petioning for land. Hezakiah Settled on Lot 18 in Raliegh Township on the banks of the Thames River and is really the only family member we have a fair record though not complete. Elisha and Hezakiah were United Empire Loyalists. Nearly 50,000 arrived in Upper and Lower Canada following the American Revolution. Most of them went to The Maritimes and Eastern Ontario. A smaller number settled along the shores of the lakes in Niagara and the Chatham area . The Thames River gave the early settlers access to good land further inland. The first few years life was very hard and they had to depend on the British Government for food supplies and tools, however these groups soon became some of the most prosperous farmers in what was to become Ontario It is reported that Elisha and his daughter Sarah, his son in law Eliphilet Emmons and a young son (grandson) were murdered by Indians on the banks of the Detroit River. There are various documents signed by Chief Justice Baby to support this in the archives. The story is told by a Amos Wilcox of Cooksville Ontario who was a veteran of the American Revolution who was in battles at Lundys lane Queenston Hieghts and Detroit. Bob and Muriel Wilcox of Chatham were Shirley Wilcox's genealogy partners and did some travelling in the North Eastern United States they found evidence that Elisha owned land prior to the American Revolution near Wilksberry Penn. I have included copies of some of these documents in the Appendix in this Family genealogy as well as some pictures of interest. You will also note that some short bibliographies of some of the descendants are included. I think it makes the whole family genealogy more interesting and since this a computer generated report, additions are easy. In addition there are paragraphs headed [Bob Wilcox Remembers] they are just a few of my recollections. I would welcome more information of this nature.Note that Ross Wilcox has added some remarks that greatly add to the readability of this rather long document. If we could ever find all the dece I know that this genealogy of the descendants of Elisha will never be complete but it is a good record of a lot of fine people born in the last 300 years. In conclusion I would like to thank the following who have assisted in the preparation of this genealogy {who are not reposnsible for the many errors} Of course the late Shirley Benedict Willcox Chatham Ontario Larry Wilcox Ottawa Douglas Willcox Chatham Gordon Wilcox Chatham Bruce Copley Chatham Ester Macintosh Brantford Jack Wilcox Phoenix Arizona Lorine McGinnis Schulze Olive Tree Genealogy Bill Wilcox Windsor Louise Knight Chatham Mima Harrison Lakeside Ross Wilcox Burlington Mildred Clark Comber Ethel Wilcox my mother at 95 in the Sun Parlor for Senior Citizens remembers many of these descendants. This information may be reproduced with out permission any time and the cost would not be great at 7 to 10 cents a page When the report reads no known childern it is because none have been entered The report has many missing dates which can be added any time.I welcome changes and additiions any time. To read about the early pioneer families who settled in Kent County an excellent reference is Romantic Kent the Story of a County 1626 -1952 by Victor Lauriston On August 12, 1952, Mr. Lauriston wrote in his introduction to the book: "In so large a book errors are inevitable. That I may be wrong is fundamental. My estimates of men and events may at times be counter to popular opinion; but they represent my sincere best judgement in the light of available evidence. Time will doubtless revise my conclusions in the interest of truth, which is eternal." As a matter of further interest I have a publication entitled Historical Notes on the Providence United Church River Road Raliegh Township near Chatham, Ontario 1866-1966 by Reverent J.L. Vinet. This is an excellent history of the Providence Church to which a number of Elisha decendants attended over the years and likely still do. The first Settlers came as early as 1770 and the first circut ride preacher visited the area August 10 1804 and it was the famed Nathan Bangsan oustanding preacher from Detroit. In1808 the reverend William Case held worship services in the home of Isaac Dolson. The history goes on to say that the pioneers of the Thames had a rough and tough life and it was no secerat that they loved their whiskey. The Rev. Case left in his memoirs this not to flaterring comment thatsome of them were the most wicked and dissapated people in America .He also left in his memoirs about preaching at the home if Isaac Dolson about the evils of liquor an some even brought whiskey to the meeting. One rough loking man called the preacher a wizard and made for the door accidendly breaking the bottle on his way out. I am sure it could not have been a Wilcox P.S. THE MANY INACURACIES INTHIS GENELOAGY ARE MINEThe computer program does exactlty what you tell it to print and if you are not careful it is so easy to have incorrect places and dates. If no childern are entered for a married couple the print out automatically prints that they have no known childern which may or may not be true. There are nearly 1000 individuals and over 300 families in this Genealogy and many mistakes. Signed----- Elisha's Great, Great, Great Grand Son, Robert (only one name) Wilcox son of Edgar Wall ---Grand son of Valentine

    3. I am still fairly new to this site and only in the past week or so have I seen much from the WILCOX site. The following is what little I have on our family line. It has been said that we have Indian ancestry and that is why there may be little records of our family. Most of our records have come from the family Bible. The oldest ancestor I have record of for the Wilcox line is my gg-grandfather, EMANUEL HILL WILCOX. He was born Feb. 4, 1819, but we do not know where he was born. He married a MARY ELENOR JOHNSTON on Dec. 3, 1848 and we do not know where they were married. Mary was born Oct. 19, 1830 and we do not know where. Emanuel died Feb. 17, 1868 and Mary died about two weeks later on March 1, 1868. They had a son, my g-grandfather, JAMES WILLIAM WILCOX. James was born June 15, 1863, but we do not know where. He married a CLAUDIA VOCIAL DAVIS on July 22, 1894 in Indian Territory, Third Judicial Div. Claudia was born September 16, 1877 in Grosbeck, TX. James died in Oklahoma City, OK on Nov. 4, 1939 and Claudia died in Norman, OK in 1946. They are both buried in Noble, OK in the IOOF Cemetery. They had a son, my grandfather, CLAUD NEWTON WILCOX. He was born June 16, 1907 in Francis Oklahoma Territory. He married my grandmother, VIOLA VERA HENSON, in Sulphur, OK in 1940. Viola was born in Pink, OK on Feb. 22, 1918. Claude and Viola divorced when my father, HARLOW GENE WILCOX, was a baby. Claude moved to Bakersfield, CA at some point in time and that is where he passed away on March 19, 1981. If anyone has a connection to my family and/or might know of any descendents past Emanuel and Mary Elenor, I would surely appreciate any help I could get. Thank you, Tawnda L.
