    1. [WILBURN-L] Re: Gunnery Shelton Wilburn
    2. I am searching for the line of Gunnery Shelton Wilburn. I am trying to find his parents. On his death certificate his father's name is Willie Wilburn and his mother's maiden name is Martha Bennett. I have a hunch that he is related in some way to the Gunnery's listed in The Tennessee 1850 census for Smith Co, but have no proof. I also need to identify his first wife, Alice Unknown. I have been working from some erroneous information generated some 30 years ago by my mother and posted by another relative. Gunnery Shelton Wilburn was born in 1851, not 1861, in MS but perhaps not in Vicksburg. He is reported to have two brothers, Toby and Charles, and a sister, Lewellen. His first marriage was to Alice Unknown (who was born in Louisiana) and they had four boys: Thomas Shelton, Edwin or Edward James, William T and Walter Alice Wilburn; all of which seems to be true. Oral family history says that after his wife Alice died, Gunnery, his four boys and brother Charlie left for the Indian Territory. On their way through Arkansas they met the family of James E. Smith in Yell Co., AR. who had five daughters: Sylvia, Fannie, Lucy and Susan, and Mary Virginia Smith. Gunnery Shelton Wilburn married Mary Virginia Smith. Then, presumably the Wilburns and the Smiths traveled on together to I.T. (Susan was not born in Indian Territory not Arkansas.) Gunnery Shelton Wilburn could not have married Mary V. Smith in Arkansas because he had to have still been married to Alice because two of their four sons were born in Louisiana but the two younger ones were born in Indian Territory. Alice had to still be in the picture for this to happen. Walter A. Wilburn was born abt 1884. Gunnery Shelton Wilburn married Mary Virginia Smith about 1889 - by the 1900 Federal census they had been married 11 years and had six children: Elbert Hubbard (Louis Elbert), Cordelia, Benjamin Franklin, Claude Clarence, Mary Ann and Pearlee Frances (my mother who was born Jan 22, 1900). By the 1910 census for LeFlore County, Milton Township, they had three more children: Ulyses Sampson, Lillian Blanche and Vera. There final son Alton Debs was born abt. 1912. Can anyone help me find Gunnery Shelton Wilburn's true parents. Also need to find what happened to his first wife.
