Very much apprciated!! About Lewis Wilburn b. 1803 and m to Mary Polly Bratton Chapman....You are right. No one has been able to prove that he is a son of William Wilburn and Eda Guttery Willburn who were married in Amherst Va in 1787...(marriage bond signed by Richard Wilburn also noted as father of groom...and John Guttery noted for bride...)... However, if one were to apply the duck theory, Wm and Eda would certainly appear to be the best candidates for parenthood for Lewis...This has to do with the fact, that William Wilburn and Eda Guttery Wilburn appear to be the oldest known Wilburns who settled into Giles, VA..reportedly arriving c 1780 from NC...(David Johnston's history book published in 1906 on New River families...) forget the title..but can look it up for those interested.... Wm Wilburn and Richard Wilburn appear together on 1783 and 1787 tax records in what was then Montgomery Co VA...that same year, Richard Wilburn, over in Amherst Va, also appears on tax records........So one assumes that the Richard Wilburn living next to William Wilburn was his brother and not his father....(It would appear that William returned to Amherst Va and married Eda Guttery and then after his marriage, the couple, along with his brother crossed over the Blue Ridge Mt and settled in permanently. And or they went down the New River from Amherst into Surry NC and from Surry NC went up the Clinch River into Giles VA.....my knowledge of geography is very limited...so someone else might be better able to conclude the best traveling route for that era...) I have two reasons for reaching this conclusion, i.e. William Wilburn (b. c 1760) being father of Lewis Wilburn..m to Mary Polly Bratton Chapman. 1.Only the descendants of William Wilburn appears to have lived out their lives in Giles, VA.......I am aware of no other Wilburn who lived out their life in Giles, VA who was not a descendant. (Some notes here) Richard referenced above on tax records appears to have moved on and appears to be the same Richard who is in Highland, co OH c 1808...there were two Richard Wilburns in Highland, OH by 1810. Along with some Hughes relatives... Here is what I think....I think that Richard Wilburn who enlisted in the Rev War in in Amherest VA...was Richard Wilburn jr. I supsect that Richard jr went to Highland, OH due to a land grant for his efforts in the Rev War... Highland, OH was then noted as Virginia Miliatry District and everyone who settled there was either a vet of the war OR bought out a land grant from a vet...directly or indirectly.....Richard Wilburn enlisted in the Rev War from Amherst serving in Capt Massie's unit...and it was Nathanial Massie, a brother of his Captain, who led a group of settlers into Highland, OH after the war ended....(The local DAR chapter in Highland, OH is named for Massie.)... Richard Wilburn appears on tax records in 1826 in Highland, OH...and since the older Richard was dead six years earlier it does make sense that there were two Richard Wilburns who settled into Highland, OH....Plus it would be impossible to think of a man in his ninties making a resettlement trek of hundreds of miles without immediate family to lend assistance... So.....that takes us back to Giles, VA....and my second reason which is... 2. The 1840 census records show Lewis Wilburn in Giles VA...with a male between the ages of 30-40...and another male and female between the ages of 70 and 80....At first blush I thought this meant a Lewis Wilburn who was b. beteen 1760-70...and then I realized that this was not the case..And instead, was the Lewis Wilburn who was the younger person and had older people living in his household...of course this couple could be his in-laws..but it appears that Hugh Jordan )father in Law of Lewis Wilburn) was dead before 1840....dunno???? All of this is to say this is how I have re-constructed these lines..since William and Eda Wilburn left no will that has been uncovered...if they wrote a will, it appears to have been lost to the ages... I took the time to spell this out because so many of us today are descendants of Richard Wilburn who rests in peace in Highland, OH... If anyone can find any errors in my conclusions here..and have docs that tell another story, please do let me know...Thanks much Vikky >This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > >Classification: Query > >Message Board URL: > >http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ncWBAIB/183.203.209.211 > >Message Board Post: > >My grandfather, George L Wilburn, was a son of Hugh Jordan Wilburn. Hugh Jordan Wilburn's parents were Lewis Wilburn and Mary Bratton (Polly B) Jordan. Mary was the daughter of Sallie Chapman and Hugh Jordan. Lewis and Mary were married in Giles Co on October 29, 1830. Mary's obituary says that they had 12 children. I have found 11children: 4 boys and 7 girls. I was told that Lewis' parents were William Wilburn and Elizabeth Chapman. I have no proof of that yet. The 11 children of Lewis and Mary B. were (1)Harriet, (2) Angeline or Angelina, (3) Henrietta Virginia who married Lewis Bryant Rogers; (4) Hugh Jordan Wilburn who was married at least 4 times (my great-grandmother, Isabella Jane Holiday was his last wife); (5) Gordon Lewis Wilburn who died a daughter's home in East Beckley in 1930 (her married name was Farley). (6) William S Wilburn who married Rebecca Gautier; (7) Sarah who was born Dec 8, 1846, d. July 25, 1863 and is buried in Wilburn Cemetery in Giles! > Co, VA. (8) Mary H who married Travis Burton; (9) Geroge Chapman Wilburn who married Josephine Meadows; (10) Rhoda J who married John H. Woods and (11) Eliza F who married James M. Turner, a widower in 1880 and (12) unknown.. >George C built a house on his father's farms in front of the cabin his father Lewis built. George and Josie had 6 children Emmett Woodson, Houston, Lewis Jordan, Mary Gracie, Nellie Everett and Harry Glen. This information on George Chapman Wilburn came from Nellie's daughter. >I would be happy to exchange further information with you. > > >==== WILBURN Mailing List ==== >Be sure to check out the Wilburn mailing list web page at >http://www.geocities.com/WilburnWeb/ >for links to other Wilburn pages! >
