Co., Tn. "She was a daughter of Burrel Wilburn, who came from Va. to Perry Co., Tn. Burell Wilburn married Mary Lomax, a daughter of Samuel Lomax, of NC." He says of John Wilburn in Hi. Co. Tn. John Wilburn settled near the head of Pretty Creek near Vernon in 1815. He goes on to say that John Wilburn had in his employ a man named Phelps. When they came to settle up, Phelps claimed that Wilburn did not pay him all that was due him. He said that he would get even. Next morning, Phelps was gone, as was also Wilburn's fine stallion. Traders carrying furs to Nashville took with them the news of Wilburn's loss, and told of the $50.00 reward he had offered. Phelps was soon apprehended and he and the fine stallion were returned to Hi. Co. Tn. Phelps was publically whipped at Vernon, the county seat at that time. (My notes, John Wilburn md. a Phelps, it was probably his brother in law. I am not sure if there was any relation or what relationship to the Wilburns in Perry Co. These 2 counties connect, so it is possible that they were. jm
