As some of you know I have been seeking out Wilburns or all varieties, shapes and sizes and from all locations in the United States. And yet, years later, I still know very little about those ancestors who married into my own direct Wilburn ancestral line. But I have finally (thanks to the internet and tons of help from other researchers) I have been able to make some progress. This remains a work in progress and in most cases, I have learned the families, but unfortunately not the exact people who did all the begetting. As many of you know the experts say that only 25% of marriage records in VA and NC exist today...Many counties in TN and KY and other states simply do not have marriage records until 1835 or later. So this always presents problems when our ancestors settled into these (later) burnt out locations. Bacon's Rebellion in 1676 in which he torched Jamestown, VA, and later the Civil War destruction of many southern court houses has resulted in documents that are simply lost to the ages. At any event, the following are some surnames that connect to my direct Wilburn line. Some are surnames of my direct ancestors and other names, I remain uncertain, but know that these families are related to my own ancestors, but perhaps related indirectly. Please let me know if ANY of these same surnames are connected in any way to your own families. Thanks so very much! This Gunnery was one of many men named Gunnery Wilburn. The first known Gunnery Wilburn was b c 1745 and m Judith Owen in Goochland, VA in 1771. He later died in Halifax,VA in 1796. I forgot how many children he named in his will. 8 or 10, I believe. No one named Gunnery mentioned, but he had at least two grandsons named Gunnery. One of them served in the War of 1812 from TN. And or this was a son who was not named in his will. Gunnery also had a son named Obediah who m Judith Martin..and was kin to Obediah Martin.. So it you come across any Obediah Martins...Then the probability is great that they too, are descendants of Gunnery and Judith Owen Wilburn. As you know, this family has roots in Smith Co TN and before that in Bedford Co VA, after Halifax, VA...and then Goochland Va before that time frame. It is believed that Gunnery Wilburn (m to Judith Owen) was the son of Richard Wilburn and Ann Whitlock Wilburn of Goochland, VA. (not proven)...If not son, then he would be a relative of this couple. Cheers Vikky
