Beth, Another researcher reported to me that Burwell Wilburn who married Mary Lomax and lived in Perry Co TN had roots in Surry/Sussex Co VA. Based upon the records that I once reviewed, I found this to make sense. And I would say this is correct, UNLESS someone can prove otherwise. There are a number of Sussex Co VA Church records that show Wilburn families there c 1740 to 1780. (This is from memory and I do not recall exact lineage. NOT EVEN!!!!) But here are some of the names that I do remember.... John Wilburn, Anne Patterson, Temperance Wilburn, Burwell Wilburn, Benjamin Wilburn (I believe twin to Burwell) and also a Richard Wilburn who I recall as being noted last c 1780. And a Benjamin King, too, who appears to be related to these various Wilburn families. If someone has these Church Records from this county, (Sussex Co VA ) it would be GREAT if they were posted on this genfourm. .. As I noted in my prior message re: Burwell Wilburn and Mary Lomax Wilburn... I can understand why anyone would think that the Wilburns in CASS Co MO might be descendants of Burwell Wilburn and Mary Lomax. But I remain convinced that this is NOT likely and instead, much more likely to be descendants of Edward Wilburn of Surry Co NC and one of his sons... But let me be clear here...I am of the opinion that ALL of these Wilburn families were related. I believe that the Wilburns of Sussex Co VA and the Wilburns of Surry Co NC and the Wilburns of Goochland, VA and the Welborns of Rowan Co NC were all related....And that they were related to the Welborns of Accomack Co VA. It took me years to come to this conclusion, but I believe now that this is the case. Cheers and well wishes to all Wilburns everywhere. Beth, Yes! Indeed! This is very helpful!!!! I knew when I saw your name that you had taken the time to look up these records. Here is what I think......(now someone will have to take the time to prove this right or wrong...so I want to be up front...... this is merely my opinion.) It seems to me that these Wilburns in CASS co MO were descendants of the Wilburns of Surry NC. Edward Wilburn and Mary St. Clair Wilburn...I note this for several reasons. 1. Edward Wilburn who m Susan Benham in Knox co KY in 1803 is one of the seven sons of Edward Wilburn who died in Surry NC in 1806. Edward Wilburn (jr) is the father of ... 2. Edward Wilburn m to Nancy Overton in 1830 in Jackson Co MO. (This has long been proven by his descendants. (I am not one of them) Edward Wilburn and Susan Benham were married in Knox co KY in 1803. They lived in Knox Co KY until c 1819, when Edward sold his land and relocated to MO. Edward Wilburn was also a slave holder. In his old age, Edward then went with one of his sons to Dallas co TX and died there in 1846. I believe that he went with Edward Wilburn and Nancy Overton Wilburn (Please note, that I do not have my database up and running yet and that I am recalling this from memory. I hope that some of the descendants of this line will jump in a provide more detailed information.) Apparently they went from MO to TX to help establish the Peter Colony...Some very interesting material and court records are on line so if anyone is interested they can find this material on the internet.) 3. Edward Wilburn m to Susan Benham also had a brother named Richard Wilburn. Richard Wilburn m Suzannah Roberts in Surry NC in 1792. (I believe this is correct) They had children and one of them was named Elliott Wilburn. There was an Elliott family living in Surry NC at the same time as Richard Wilburn...and I suspect that they were related to the Wilburns there and hence the given name Elliott. (These Elliott families were also my ancestors who later m into my own Wilburn family) 4. There was an Elliott Wilburn in Wayne Co TN in 1820...Then he disappears...my hunch is that he is father of these CASS CO MO Wilburns....(please keep in mind this is merely a hunch.) 5. There is an Elliott Wilburn in Cass Co Mo. So I suspect that Tempy Wilburn Adkins b TN was a member of this Wilburn family who lived IN Wayne co TN... 6. I do know that the given names cited by Beth living in CASS Co MO also run in the family of Edward Wilburn of Surry NC. Children of Edward Wilburn who died in Surry NC in 1806 are: Richard.....m to Suzannah Roberts ..son Elliott Wilburn m Nancy Snow in Surry NC John .....Mary Hampton (a widow) Zachariah m Jemina White Robert Thomas Lewis......Mary Garland in 1804 in Johnston Co NC (could be son of same name) Edward...Susan Benham Temperance Suzannah m Stephen Jones Lydia m (whatshisface) Slaughter I know that others can fill in the blanks here better than I can...But I cite these names to show how and why I believe that Tempy is a descendant of this family. BUT....it should also be noted that Burwell Wilburn also descends from a family that has very similar naming patterns. And my own Wilburn ancestors also have most of these given names included. And I am of the opinion that all of these mentioned Wilburn families were related. But I do not believe that Tempy is a descendant of Burwell and Mary Lomax Wilburn... I can see why she might be listed as a descendant of Burwell Wilburn due to the naming patterns...Easy to see why someone would draw this conclusion. Thanks to Beth, I was able to provide a bit more detail...I am certain that others can provide you with additional assistance re: Edward Wilburn and Susan Benhan and his son Edward Wilburn m to Nancy Overton... Please too, keep in mind that I have merely attempted to put together what makes sense to me. Cheers, Vikky ps...Richard Wilburn who appears in 1850 CASS co MO later relocated to KS by 1860. ----- Original Message ----- From: Beth Shumate Sent: Friday, September 20, 2002 6:14 PM To: WILBURN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [WILBURN-L] Re: WILBURNS Cass County MO The 1850 census for Cass County has the following: Cass County, Missouri; page 109, lines 18-23, house 695/700; 18 Oct 1850 Adkins, James, 33, farmer, 160, IL; Temperance, 29, TN; Benjamin, 12, MO; Wyatt, 7, MO; Nancy A., 5, MO; Susan J., 3, MO (There is a Wyatt Adkins within a page (house 689/694) of James and Tempy in this census. Karen, I, for one, do not think that Temperance Wilburn b. 1820 and living in CASS Co MO was the daughter of Burwell and Mary Lomax Wilburn. Instead, I believe that she is related to Richard and Lewis Wilburn...who appear to be her brothers. There appears to be another sibling, a female whose name I have forgotten..Suzannah??? There was an Elliott Wilburn in Wayne Co TN in either 1820 or 1830. Along with a Harris Wilburn...I have no idea of their descendants. And I have not seen anything on line that connects to Elliott Wilburn of Wayne Co TN either. I only note this because there was also an Elliott Wilburn in Jackson or CASS county MO... And my hunch is that Elliott Wilburn, Lewis Wilburn and Richard Wilburn were from the same family...and then this would put Temperance Wilburn in this same family also... I would have to have a copy of the 1850 CASS or Jackson Co MO census records to be of more help. Perhaps someone on this forum can provide better assistance. I suspect (but please keep in mind that this is merely a hunch) that Temperance Wilburn connects to the Wilburn family in Surry co NC. Now I am basing this on one thing only. Elliott Wilburn...IF, Temperance Wilburn is related to Elliott Wilburn, and I do not know for a fact that she is, but IF she is, then it is more likely that she is a descendant of the Wilburns of Surry NC. Sorry to be so vague...but I am not on firm ground here. If any of this makes sense, let me know. And I will attempt to do so more digging. Hopefully someone else is more knowledgeable about this family. Hello to all of you in Wilburn land. After years of wandering through the Wilburn wilderness I am finally able to make some progress regarding these various and sundry Wilburn and their allied families. And I can only do so, thanks to LITERALLY thousands of other researchers who share their work on the internet. Here is a little tip..If your ancestor has a given name that is something other than James, William, Robert, etc...then this (probably) means that this given name was handed down by an ancestor of the same surname... For example: Barney Wilburn born in TN 1900....probably had ancestors whose surname was Barney...This is what I mean by clues...because there WAS a Wilburn/Barney marriage that took place in KY. And by logging onto the Barney genforum, I did uncover a Barney/ Wilburn connection. And connected to my own Carter KY Wilburn ancestors too. Let me know if you think that I can help in any way. Cheers, Vikky in San Diego

I am searching for the line of Gunnery Shelton Wilburn. I am trying to find his parents. On his death certificate his father's name is Willie Wilburn and his mother's maiden name is Martha Bennett. I have a hunch that he is related in some way to the Gunnery's listed in The Tennessee 1850 census for Smith Co, but have no proof. I also need to identify his first wife, Alice Unknown. I have been working from some erroneous information generated some 30 years ago by my mother and posted by another relative. Gunnery Shelton Wilburn was born in 1851, not 1861, in MS but perhaps not in Vicksburg. He is reported to have two brothers, Toby and Charles, and a sister, Lewellen. His first marriage was to Alice Unknown (who was born in Louisiana) and they had four boys: Thomas Shelton, Edwin or Edward James, William T and Walter Alice Wilburn; all of which seems to be true. Oral family history says that after his wife Alice died, Gunnery, his four boys and brother Charlie left for the Indian Territory. On their way through Arkansas they met the family of James E. Smith in Yell Co., AR. who had five daughters: Sylvia, Fannie, Lucy and Susan, and Mary Virginia Smith. Gunnery Shelton Wilburn married Mary Virginia Smith. Then, presumably the Wilburns and the Smiths traveled on together to I.T. (Susan was not born in Indian Territory not Arkansas.) Gunnery Shelton Wilburn could not have married Mary V. Smith in Arkansas because he had to have still been married to Alice because two of their four sons were born in Louisiana but the two younger ones were born in Indian Territory. Alice had to still be in the picture for this to happen. Walter A. Wilburn was born abt 1884. Gunnery Shelton Wilburn married Mary Virginia Smith about 1889 - by the 1900 Federal census they had been married 11 years and had six children: Elbert Hubbard (Louis Elbert), Cordelia, Benjamin Franklin, Claude Clarence, Mary Ann and Pearlee Frances (my mother who was born Jan 22, 1900). By the 1910 census for LeFlore County, Milton Township, they had three more children: Ulyses Sampson, Lillian Blanche and Vera. There final son Alton Debs was born abt. 1912. Can anyone help me find Gunnery Shelton Wilburn's true parents. Also need to find what happened to his first wife.

----- Original Message ----- From: Vikky Anders Sent: Tuesday, August 13, 2002 7:57 PM To: WilburnL-@rootsweb.com Subject: Wilburns and allied families to Daniel Boone Vikky Wilburn Anders again, Within the past few days, and all thanks greatly to the generous souls on the internet who share their material, I was able to put some pieces together re: A Wilburn family whose ancestors went missing. It only took me three years before I found a clue. The same clue that has been right under my nose all this time. Oh well... At any event, this newly found clue(s) has to do with Wilburns whose roots are in Giles, Co VA. And who married into the Fraizer family. Hugh Jordan Wilburn (b. 1838) son of Lewis Wilburn b. 1803 and Mary Polly Jordan, to be precise. (This Jordan family is most interesting. With an ancestor named Samuel Jordan who sailed aboard the 'Sea-Venture', was shipwrecked and finally landed in VA in 1610. Jordan later owned a plantation, first known as 'Diggs his Hundreds' and later recorded in history as 'Jordan's Journey'...And that too, is another story. But back to the Wilburn and Fraizer lines. I then learned (thanks to the very hard work of others) that the Fraizers were allied with the Van Bibber or VanBebber families. And that the Fraziers were allied with the family of Daniel Boone. And reportedly, one VanBibber family today has a rifle that once belonged to Boone due to allied kinship. And after logging on to the VanBibber genforum, I was amazed to see how many VanBibber families were allied with Wilburns, both directly and indirectly...and allied with the Harding families too. And the VanBibber family was also allied with the Josh Hite family. Josh HITE was a noted LONG HUNTER and leader in his own right. The Wilburns and HITES were also allied families and a marriage record can be found in the piedmont area of VA. (I am still working without my database and files. Dang it) But back to Daniel Boone and his many descendants. (Like many Wilburns, I too, heard that my ancestors once trekked with Boone and his buddies. Still, I have yet to be able to place my own Wilburn ancestors with Daniel Boone.) But other Wilburns were in Madsion Co KY (1787) and a better case can be made that these Wilburns might have rubbed elbows with the Long Hunter. Still, my own Wilburn ancestors were directly allied with the Wallen and Blevins family...And Daniel Boone, as history notes, stayed on Wallen Creek in Lee Co VA for a period of time)...Named for Elisha Wallen, also a noted Long Hunter. (Lewis Wilburn b. c 1770 m Susan Blevins) Moving right along....I then logged onto the Boone genforum...punched in the Wilburn name. And up popped one descendant of the Daniel Boone family whose given name was Wilburn. In fact, this person's name was Wilburn Netherton whose parents were: James Netherton b. 1842 and Ellen Rice. And the parent of James Netherton was reportedly TILLMAN Netherton...(Please note, there were a number of Rice/Wilburn marriages in KY and elsewhere.) Ah, the Tillman name also known as Tighlman or a varied spelling. And I recalled seeing a pedigree that claimed that Nancy Wilburn b c 1780 who went to MO m a Tillman. Of course, this made me consider that this (reported) Tillman/Wilburn connection has much to do with Tillman Netherton whose grandson was named Wilburn Netherton. There appear to be many other (indirect) connections to the Boone and Wilburn families in addition. Additional families include: Harding and Matthew or Mathew or Mathias families who connect to the families of Daniel Boone. I cite these due to the fact that there were some Wilburns who married into these families. AND, they also lived in the same location, at the same time. In addition, there was an Anderson/Boone connection...I believe that the John Anderson and his kin, who was related to the Wilburns of Cumberland Co KY were the same Anderson family that connects to Daniel Boone. We do know that Polly Wilburn of this same Cumberland, KY family m into the Champ line and that Champ was a companion of Daniel Boone and a Long Hunter in his own right. (There are some wills from Cumberland Co KY from Wilburns that show these connections.) And This same info can be found in the published book, 'The Wilburns Who Came West', 1991 by Margery Wilburn Jensen. And lastly, here are a few surnames of men who were noted as having trekked with Daniel Boone. I am only including the surnames that are known to me as having married into various Wilburn families. Calloway Smith Holder HART.......there were several Wilburn Harts...roots in Wilkes and Ashe Co KY and Claiborne Co TN Mullins Gentry At least six Gentry/Wilburn and Gentry/Welborn marriages. (including my own parents over a hundred years later.) White Phelps *Hart family is allied with Blevins and Osbornes, Sizemore, Stamper families who are kin to my own Wilburn ancestors. If any of you find this of interest and/or have additional info to share, please let me hear from you. Thanks so much....Vikky

However, I could never see the connection. I think that she noted some land deeds were proof of this. But I always wondered about these naming patterns too. I do remember that there was a Richard Wilburn connected to this family. And there seems to be a Benjamin King that lived near these Wilburn families in Sussex Co VA. Which also made me wonder if there was any connection between Andrew Wilburn and his family who appear in Harrison Co IN in 1850 and who lived next to a Benjamin King family and who also had some Wilburns living in the same household as King families. Or something like that. I do not have access to my paper files to review at this time. But there was also a Wallen family in Sussex Co Va at the same time as Wilburns..And my own family was allied with Wallens. And they also lived next to Burrell King and his family in Claiborne Co TN in 1830. Lewis Wilburn b. 1802, was first cousin to Edward Burrell Wilburn...well, I could go on and on about these co-incidences. Patterson Wilburn was the son of William Wilburn b. 1792. One thing that I found as I was researching my own line(Burrill, b.1742 & William Wilburn my 3rd GGrandfather were brothers) was that the bulk of this huge Wilburn Family was no longer in Sussex VA by the 1820's. They went somewhere else!!! And all the evidence taken together certainly points to the possibility that Perry Co. TN was where the "Burrill" branch landed. (My direct line went VA-ALA-TN-MS & Burrill's family never appeared with them) It is certainly a reasonable possibility that the Davis Family moved along with these Wilburns as did so many "cluster" families of that era. Often as they moved together, they continued to intermarry for generations. I am sorry that I can offer ! no proof. I just felt that this was a possible connection that you might want to consider. Good luck & don't give up asking questions.
This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Wilburn Classification: Death Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ncWBAIB/350 Message Board Post: In Mont Belview, TX (Chambers County, i believe) there is a single headstone situated in the middle of a field under some huge oak trees. There is local rumors that the spot is haunted by her ghost. The headstone reads: SARAH WILBURN JAN. 1, 1873 MAR. 9, 1888 AGE 15 YRS. 2 MOS. 6 DAYS Local rumor has it that if you lie down on her grave at exactly midnight, her spirit will hold you to the ground until 12:01. Probably just local kids making things up, but the place does put out an eerie vibe. SO... I was hoping to find out some more info on this girl. I tried looking her up on Ancestry.com, but found no record of her. I've never really tried this kind stuff so hopefully someone out there can do a better research on her than me. Even if you can point me in the right direction, that would be a big help. BTW, if anyone ones photos of the gravestone and site or can shed some light on things, just email me at butlerm@texas.net. Also, please do not use the email address butlerm@EXCITE.com to email me. I only used that to register. The real email is butlerm@TEXAS.net Thanks, Mike Butler Baytown, TX
