    1. [WILBURN-L] Re: Opechancanough-Uncle to Pocahontas
    2. Vikky Anders
    3. Before you open this file, let me share just a tidbit of what I have learned. There are many people today who are descendants of Pocahontas. I am not certain of this number and I doubt that anyone is, but an estimation would be over 200,000 of her descendants are alive, if not well, in the United States today. Some of us Wilburns are also descendants. And in fact, the hugh volume of descendants of Pocahontas do contain names of some Wilburns or Welborns...Those so noted (and I do apologize that I did not take notes when I hastily reviewed this book when I was doing research in Washington DC back in 1995) but I can recall that those Wilburns in the book were residents of TX and were noted as descendants through their other ancestors and not due to a direct Wilburn line to Pocahontas.)..... But most of us Wilburns today are closely related to Pocahontas and her family. And some of us may be descendants through the Randolph or Lewis line. (Please do not hold my feet to the fire if I am wrong here.)...Note key word is "Maybe"...What we do know is that many of Pocahontas descendants were living in Goochland, VA c 1750. Some of descendants of Pocahontas and John Rolfe were Bolings or Bollings and Bowles too. Some were also Randolphs. As in the Randolph family of Thomas Jefferson. And yes, Thomas Jefferson did live in Goochland, VA in his youth. I hesitate to say much more on this subject since I am not a scholar...but there are a few things that I have uncovered and would like to share with you. Wilburns and Hughes lines...Many Wilburns (not all) but many Wilburns with early VA roots have a Hughes ancestor. Some of us have several lines of the same Hughes families. Often we descend from the same ancestors many times. My own parents who had a chance meeting in San Diego, share ancestors from 200 years before they met up. Who knew???? Many of us can say the same thing. And we also share our colonial ancestors with millions (yes, millions of other people in America today.) Indeed, it boggles the mind at how related we actually are. But I am digressing here. Back to Wilburns and Hughes. TRADER HUGHES appears to be the HUGHES ancestor of the Hughes of Goochland and Amherst Co VA. I remain uncertain as to when the first Hughes and Wilburn marriage took place. It appears that Richard Wilburn and his Hughes wife were married by c 1750, if not much sooner. There could be earlier Hughes/Wilburn marriages too. (keep in mind that only 25% of VA marriage records survive). Now Trader Hughes ...and I suspect that his given name was BEES Hughes...but this is my hunch and certainly not proved. Again, please keep this in mind...But he was known by all of his associations as simply 'Trader' Hughes...because that is exactly what he did. At any event, Trader Hughes m Niskitti (an Indian girl) and kin to Pocahontas. As you will be able to see when you click on this file, there are many disputes about these exact relationships...But no one disputes these connections...instead those more sophisticated that I, take issue with just who begot whom... And in closing, thanks Christine for your kind words. I had you in mind, when I went to this Pocahontas website... And I do invite the rest of you to visit too... Cheers Vikky at vikkya@msn.com http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?trader,hughes::pocahontas::177.html

    3. Recently someone posted a note looking for the ancestors of William Warren Wilburn. I cannot answer that question, but I feel certain that these Warren lines have everything to do with William Warren Wilburn. Warrens were in VA early 1600's. As were many of our ancestors... This researcher has done an amazing amount of work and I found many of my ancestors on his website. Anyhow, I thought that some of you would enjoy browsing. There is one Wilburn noted. Wilburn and Skaggs in MO...I too, have a Wilburn and Skaggs in Ashe co NC much earlier... Cheers, Vikky at vikkya@msn.com http://genforum.genealogy.com/warren/messages/3733.html

He pretended to drink a bottle of laudanum. She called the ambulance from the Walnut street station, and it made a hurried run. WILBURN spent the night in the police holdover. 1. [WILBURN-L] BARON I. WILBURN married Sarah R Lane
    2. Vikky Anders
    3. http://genforum.genealogy.com/wilburn/messages/1295.html This message had me curious. I had never heard of Baron I Wilburn before.. But I had a hunch that IF I logged onto the Baron or Barron genfourm and punch in the Wilburn name, I would find a Wilburn Barron...and I did too. So this is a tip that I want to pass on to anyone who is starting out...because I sure wished that I had learned this much sooner. And in fact, I am going through some of my old Wilburn records and now punching in their given names on the same surname genfourm and finding postings that show the given name Wilburn. Example: This is an easy one. Sizemore Wilburn...Its pretty easy to assume that there was a Sizemore ancestor when this guy was named. So I went to the Sizemore genfourm and found Wilburn Sizemore and he connects to some of my other ancestors who married Wilburns in Wilkes Co NC. Another example: Lewis Wilburn b. 1802 (probably in Wilkes Co NC) m to Eliz Fitzpatrick Wilburn named one of his sons, Harvey Allen Wilburn. Harvey Wilburn was b in 1844 in Carter KY. Harvey m Mahalia McAdams. Two of their sons were Jesse and Preston Wilburn. I went to the Harvey genfourm and punched in the name Wilburn...and found a Wilburn Harvey b. in KY who named two of his sons Preston and Jesse Harvey. What does this tell me???? Well, it tells me that I have more work to do...cause there has to be some connection, somewhere between Wilburn and Harvey families...I then learned that Harveys were kin to DOSS families and the Doss families were kin to Wilburns. And then I went to the McAdams genforum and punched in the name Wilburn and to my surprise I found a Wilburn McAdams, born long before Harvey Wilburn m Mahelia McAdams. And the McAdams were kin to the Teagues of North Carolina. (Please note, there were several different McAdams lines in NC. Some came early into VA and some later in NC) This does not mean that I can put all of these families into a direct descendant line. WRONG! I can only wish...but it does provide me with some clues and it also lets me know that these families certainly appear to have connected long before I ever considered. I hope that this is not too confusing and that those of you who enjoy researching on the internet will find this method an important tool for your own research. Please let me know if you have any questions or have info to share. Thanks much. Vikky at Vikkya@msn.com

    1. [WILBURN-L] Elihue or Elihu Wilburn & Pocahontas
    2. Vikky Anders
    3. Hello from Vikky... For those of you whose Wilburn ancestors were in Goochland, VA, in 1751, and were later in east TN, I have stumbled on some interesting bits of evidence. And these pieces lead me to believe that the Embree or Embry families of Goochland, VA were allied with Wilburns. I will list what I believe to be threads that link these families together. 1. Embree or Embry families were kin to VAN METERS of Goochland, VA...(I have long suspected that Wilburns were kin to Van Meters too.) 2. Embry or Embree families were kin to Woodsons and Hughes. (Wilburns were kin to Woodson and Hughes families of Goochland, VA, same time frame. 3. The given name Talton runs in the Embry family for two hundred years, according to one Embry researcher. (Please note, this name is also spelled TARLETON). 4. Robert Talton Wilburn was b. 1816 in VA. 5. The Tarleton/ Talton family first appears in York Co VA in 1650. Richard Wilburn was noted in York Co VA in 1656. 6. The Talton/Tarleton families were allied with Hughes and Woodson families and Mims families. 7. Wilburn families of Goochland, VA were allied with Hughes,Woodson and Mims families, same time frame. 8. Ehilu Embree of east TN descends from this Goochland, VA Embry family...And he is allied with Williams family and was a generaton older than both Elihu and Elihue Wilburn. PLEASE NOTE: I am not making any claims that either Elihue or Elihu Wilburn and their families connect to the Elihu Embree family. But I do think that this is a good possibility. In sum, I found the following families to be allied: VanMetersEmbry/Embree/Hughes/Woodsons/Tarletons/Taltons/Mims/Wilburns As most of you Wilburns who have ancestors in eastern TN know, court houses burnt down...there are NO census records until 1830. Few marriage records before that time frame too. So, often we have to find other means of locating our ancestors. And thanks to the internet and the work of others, we can often find clues that would have been impossible to find before the information age... If any of you have any questions about this material, please let me know. In addition, I invite you to log onto the Tarleton genform and look for the Tarleton families in York Co VA...Some most interesting history. Keep in mind that Richard Wilburn was also noted in York VA tax records in 1656. According to Tarleton researchers, these families were allied with Woodsons and Hughes back then. Also something that might be of interest. Trader Hughes .....At least one Hughes researcher claims that Trader Hughes died in what is now Amherst Co VA...It would take someone far more knowledgeable than me to prove or disprove this. BUT if Trader Hughes is the Hughes ancestor of those of us Wilburns who are descendants of the Goochland, VA Wilburns, then we are related to POCAHONTAS. This is a BIG IF...I am not making this claim, but I do believe it to be likely...But keep in mind..UNPROVEN> And we might be kin to POCAHONYAS through another line...But that's another story...much more work to do on that one. And do not hold your breath either.. (John Wilburn m to Suzannah Preston)...MIGHT be a possibility?????? I do know that some Wilburns appear in the descendants of Pocahontas Book. But not through either the Hughes of Preston lines...forgot how they were noted as descendants...But there is a great BIG Pokie Book and Wilburns are listed in the index.. And that's it for tonight! Cheers, Vikky in San Diego
