    1. [WILBURN-L] Wilburns and Talley sheet
    2. Vikky Anders
    3. Mini history lesson.... Stephen Ambrose, noted historian who died recently, was the biographer of the Lewis and Clark expedition. His book 'Undaunted Courage' was required reading at my book club. I groaned knowing that it would be a guy book. And It was that. But out of this experience I gained an understanding of my own ancestors. Ambrose noted that over a course of 70 years, there were eleven Lewis and Meriwether marriages. Finally a long overdue truth started to sink in. These two families (Lewis and Meriwether) were not exceptions from this era, instead, these allied families represented the rule, with some some exceptions. In order to illustrate this proven fact, I went through my own database and pulled up every file that I have on TALLY/TALLEY families. The following is a mini demonstration of how these cluster families connect. Please keep in mind, that they are the rule and not the exception. 1. John Tally b 1818 m Thursta HUDSON in VA. Hudsons also married into OVERTON families. Hudsons also married into WINGFIELD families. Wilburns also married into Hudson and Wingfield and Overton families. Fauquier Co VA... 2. TUCKER Tally b 1720 in VA...Wilburns and Tuckers were early VA allied families. Hence Wilburn TUCKER. 3. Amanda Tally b 1827 m William DAVIS...same Davis line that married Wilburns. 4. OVERTON Tally Jr is brother of Amanda TALLY. Overton Tally m Mary WILBURN b 1822 in Halifax, VA. 5. Overton Tally b 1809 in VA and Mary Wilburn TALLY had a daughter, Julia Tally who married WILBURN Warren. (Its my opinion that William Warren Wilburn b 1782 in VA and later died in AR, fits into this Wilburn line and was a brother of Thomas Wingfield Wilburn.) 6. Overton Tally Sr m Mary HUGHES. (same Hughes line that married Wilburns for over 200 years.) 7. Mathew Tally m Mary LEWIS in Wayne Co TN (same Lewis line who married Wilburns)...related also to Meriwether Lewis...appear to be kin to Elliot Wilburn also of Wayne Co TN who was there in 1820. 8. George Tally b 1775 m Sarah Ann COLE in VA 9. Edmund COLE b 1830 in VA m Julia LEWIS Wilburn. All right! Wake up! Wake up! See how much fun this is???? Cheers Vikky Any questions??? let me know. Any additional info??? Please let me hear from you too. Thanks

    1. [WILBURN-L] Adams/Wilburns and allied families c 1700 to 1850 VA/NC/KY
    2. Vikky Anders
    3. Hello from San Diego. I hope that all of your in Wilburn land had a great Holiday! I've been going through my database and looking at allied families of Wilburns. The Adams family is one example of a line whose family members married into many families that Wilburns also married into. Although I only have two Wilburn/Adams marriages in my database, I am sure that there were other Wilburn/Adam marriages before and after 1850. At any event, many of these families who married Adams also married into Wilburn families too. You might want to look at some of these surnames that I posted on the Adams genfourm and see if you recognize any surnames that match your own ancestors who also married Wilburns. These names represent "cluster families". As we know, our ancestors married into the same families for many generations. Often this pattern continued for well over a hundred years. I have seen lines that continue for 250 years...no doubt these younger generations had no idea that when they tied the knot, they were marrying distant kin. My own parents would have been greatly surprised to learn that they were sixth and seventh cousins. Who knew??? Anyhow, if this method of looking at possible ancestors is of interest, please let me know and I will be happy to zap more links on this forum. Holiday Cheers! Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ncWBAIB/345.2 Message Board Post: Thank you so much for posting this very interesting bit of history. The letters are indeed a treasure! Yes, this Wilburn family that you posted connects to the Davis Wilburn family who settled into Madison Co NC from Rowan Co NC. You have supplied missing information re: these descendants. I will need to copy many records and forward to you so that you can add the Wilburn line into your ancestor files. I already had Lewis Wilburn who married Nancy Gordan in my database. But did not have the rest of the info that you supplied. Surprisingly, I do not have Levina Wilburn noted since she most certainly does fit in with this Wilburn family. I also have some Gordan information too. I believe that what I have connects to Nancy Gordan's family. But this is not proved. At any event, thanks so much for writing and I will get back with you ASAP. Holiday Cheers, Vikky in San Diego

    3. Cordell Hull Wilburn b 1908 in Wilson Co TN, appears to be related to the family of Jaspher HULL b 1858 in TN who married Rhoda Ennis...One of their sons was named Wilburn Hull c 1890 in TN. (If the name Cordell Hull sounds familiar, it is because he was also from TN and was one of the key staffers for many years to FDR.) There is also a Ennis/Wilburn marriage that appears in post below. Does anyone have any information about these families? Thanks heaps! Vikky http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?wilburn::ennis::1007.html

    3. Vikky, I think I've seen mention of Shumates in Trigg Co., KY. Don't know of any Wilbo/urn connection, though. You might try asking the Trigg Co. list. --- Vikky Anders <vikkya@msn.com> wrote: > Good morning from San Diego! > > AND Now for our next morning exercise... > > I am trying to sort out the following CONNECTING families... > > Wilburn/Champ/Shumate/Holder/Hardin guys. 3. Good morning from San Diego! AND Now for our next morning exercise... I am trying to sort out the following CONNECTING families... Wilburn/Champ/Shumate/Holder/Hardin guys. (Hardin/Harding) Shumates arrived c 1703 and settled in Prince Wm Co VA, later Fauquier Co VA...Now all I need to do is fill in the blanks... Earliest Holder who was ancestor of Holders in Fauquier Co VA (same time frame as Edward S Wilburn, later of Surry NC) was b c 1703 and was married to Hardin...family name also Harding.... Some of these Holders later settled into Union SC and also some descendants settled into Barron Co KY. Does anyone have any of these surnames in their families? Please let me know. Many thanks.. 3. Message for Beth. My grandfather was William George Wilburn born in 1873. At one time I hoped that his father might be William S. Wilburn...I tried to check any William that might fit the time frame. Unfortunately I am stuck at this point in the lineage. Vikky Anders Wilburn convinced me that William S. was not in my line...too bad. Anyway, I purchased the marriage license of William S. and Rebecca Gautier from a woman that had purchased it in a antique store. They were married May 27th 1866 at Sugar Run Church. He was 22 and she 17 years. If you are interested I am willing to place it in your care for the $15.00 I paid for it.
