Joseph Anton Sterc, Jr., a former Antigo fire chief, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at Willowdale Health and Rehab Center in New Holstein. He was 86 years old. He was born on Sept. 10, 1915, in Cicero, Ill., a son of the late Joseph and Agnes (Blaha) Sterc, Sr. On July 3, 1937, he married Esther Perrigo in Antigo. She preceded him in death on July 10, 1992. Mr. Sterc served in the Civilian Conversation Corps at Camp Point, Ill. He was employed by the Langlade County Highway Department and the Antigo Police Department prior to beginning his career with the Antigo Fire Department in 1943. He retired as fire chief after 20 years of service. An amateur baseball player and an avid bowler, he was a left-handed pitcher for the Antigo Candies and the Deerbrook team, and once bowled a perfect 300 game. He also enjoyed playing golf, hunting, fishing, playing the harmonica, saxophone, piano, violin and button accordion. Survivors include a daughter, Sandra (Al) Resch, New Holstein, a son, Robert (Alice) Sterc, Kenosha, five grandchildren, Joe, Julie and Jody Sterc, and Todd Resch and Tina (Andy) Riehl, two step-grandchildren, David and John Lynn, 15 great grandchildren, including Cooper and Case Riehl, a sister, Ruth Forbes, Antigo, two nieces, Linda Ourada, Antigo, and Jennifer Benishek, Antigo, and two nephews, MIchael Forbes, Whitelaw, and Shann Forbes, Antigo. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Richard Sterc, and a sister, Agnes Sterc. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Bradley Funeral Home.
