I will be leaving the list shortly for a much looked for respite from internet genealogy, and take to the road in search of the real people. Because I will not be able to handle any problems with members of the list, I recommend you save a copy of this e-mail in the event YOU have a problem with the list, and have to, heaven forbid, unsubscribe. You do not have to do anything but click on the address I give and it will unsubscribe you from the list. DO NOT add anything in the body of the e-mail. Hopefully this will not be needed by anyone, but just in case. You will know when I return. Happy hunting, and remember your manners!.-Bill Just click on this address to unsubscribe: mailto:[email protected]?Subject=unsubscribe
Hi all! By popular demand I have created a Wisconsin Surname Locator page on ALHN WI. The pages hold such information as what surname is being researched, what county it is being researched in, who is researching it, and a link to that researcher's email address. Please stop by and check it out or add your names at: http://www.usgennet.org/~alhnwius/WI_index.html - scroll down to Wisconsin Surname Locator and click on that button. There are well over 700 surnames listed there now and more being worked on as you read this. Date: Wed, 28 Jul 1999 21:52:05 EDT From: [email protected] Subject: Book: LUX>OZAUKEE COUNTY, WI To all researchers who had ancestors from Luxembourg who settled initially in Ozaukee County, WI: I am writing a very large book that now has over 7,000 ancestors/descendants in it. The book will also contain written and pictorial essays and information--one large essay with dozens of pictures will be of the old Lakeshore Stone Quarry, its pier, ships, etc.. If you want your families included, please contact me. All credit for family trees goes to the researchers/contributors, pictures/copies of documents welcome. You can submit in Family Tree Maker form or gedcom form. All pix must have ID list and be dated. Please: privatize the sensational data in your files and make sure it's okay to list young children before sending it. I anticipate self-publication by May of 2000, 3 volumes at least, and printing costs that will probably be around $60+ for the set plus priority mailing costs of about $10----and that's without me making a dime, and I have thousands invested in this project. This first edition is being put together by me in honor of my deceased mother who co-founded the Luxembourg Society of WI. Send an email to: [email protected] to discuss inclusion of your families. Note: many of you out there may not realize that your Luxembourg Iowa or Minnesotan ancestor stopped here in Ozaukee County, WI, first. If they did, then we want you! I am trying to get more than 10,000 people for the first edition. Best wishes, Melissa Just a few examples of surnames in this text: Anzia, Antoine, Binat, Binsfeld, Dietz, Grun/Green, Fideler/Fiedler, Mallinger, Gonnering, Schanen (two clans), Prom (two clans), Mans, Decker, Becker, Steinmetz/Steinmetzer, Mans, Remich, Barnich, Roob, Wellenstein, Krick, Krier, Kultgen, Martin, Klas, Link/Linck(Hessians who married Luxies), Ledenbach, Romanesco(Dutch who married Luxies), Speltz, Kohner, Reuter, Reiter, Roeser, Mondloch, Weiler, Wester, Weyker, and hundreds more. NEED SOME ARENDTS, ALTENDORFS, ELLENBECKERS, BURMESCH, MOOTZ, CLOSS, FLIES, RIES, THILL, AND MANY OTHERS TO CONTRIBUTE YET. Regards, Melissa
I am still at a dead end trying to find out about the family of Nick Stromberg who lived in Antigo according to the 1900 census he mortgaged property. His ocupation was listed as a farmer. Does anyone know or could they look up which farm this was. It would be nice to know if the farm is still there. We would also like to know if there would be any funeral home information. The death certificate list death as jan 20, 1901 the undertaker it looks like last name Preston. Everything so far have not listed any parents or siblings for him. We know about his marriage and children. We can't get any earlier than his marriage to Clara Lindblom in Michigan in 1883. Before that is a dead end. Thanks in advance any info would be wonderful. Jane Stromberg
I have just uploaded the current obituraries for Langlade Co., there are 596 names in the new listing.-Bill
Everyone that has a browser, and would like a free copy of PAF 4.0, click on this address: http://familysearch.org/ select the purchase LDS software, or something like that, and go to the bottom of the next screen, there is the option to download a free copy. You will have to register, but that only takes a few seconds, and you do not have to be a registed PAF user. It took me about 1/2 hour to download, and I have a slow internet connection. You will actually get two programs, Setup and PAF40.exe, just click on the Setup, tell it which folder you want it in and it will do the rest. I made the mistake of telling it to go into PAF 3.0 folder, but it seems to run okay. I would recommend putting it in a different folder. It is pretty slick, looks okay, and I converted one of my family databases to PAF 4.0, which it does automagically. I think it looks a lot better than FTM 6.0 that I have a copy of, but I haven't run any reports yet. If someone does, please post your likes, dislikes to the list.-Bill

We are looking for information on Nick Stromberg who married Clara Lindblom in Ludington in 1883 and moved to Antigo. They were both from Sweden and had 7 children. In 1899 Clara died and in 1901 Nick died leaving behind 7 children that age ranged from 3 to 15. The 1900 census list Nick as a farmer. So they must have lived on a farm in Antigo. The children were said to have gone to live with other families. Maybe in Norwood, and some say North Dakota. The name Hamiester has also come up. Can anyone help me with this mystery. We have no clue who either Nick or Clara's parents were and don't know if any siblings are alive. We would like to find out more about this family. Does anyone have any insight on them. Thanks in advance Edward & Jane Stromberg Great grandchildren of Nick and Clara
Hello everyone! http://www.usgennet.org/~alhnwius/WI_index.html Just wanted to let you know that I have added a few more links on the WI State Topics page. And, the new sites from now on will be marked with a red asterisk to make it easier for everyone to find them. I have also added a few sites on a few county pages. These new sites will be marked with the words NEW SITE!!! in red also. New to the Adams Co. site is the Adams Co. Historical Society site. I urge you to check this site out as it is a great site with lots of local information to be seen. And if you have any links that you would like to add to the site, please email with the information. If you have a personal or genealogical web site that deals with Wisconsin, you can also have a link added to the ALHN WI site. (Linda - I know you want your site on there!) :) There is also a new link on the Oneida and Vilas Co sites for look ups that are offered by a volunteer. If you can offer to do look ups and would like me to create a page with your information on it, please let me know. I will be more than happy to work with you on something. Whether you charge for your help or not, is up to you. I would just like to give folks you need help in Wisconsin a few places that they can count on getting some correct information through. Our ALHN WI page is nearing 5000 visits! Yipee!!! Not too long ago we were only at 4000. I have also included a new webtracker on the main pages of the ALHN WI site. This way I can keep track of what the most popular pages are and where people are coming from. This tracker will even tell me what country visitors are from. I want to thank everyone that has taken the time to visit the site. It wouldn't be there if it weren't for all you wonderful Wisconsinites and your ancestors!!! I'm looking for someone who has access to directories for Elton, Langlade, WI, for years between 1905 and 1932. I'm looking for listings of several PATNODE relatives who were living in Elton during that time frame, in particular Frank Edgar PATNODE and Mrs. James MATTSON (Delphine) prior to 1909 and Mrs. ? Hi, all and Happy Holidays: As your "list owner", I feel compelled to forward to you a bit of the communication that is going around to the listowners this week. For the first time in a long time, Rootweb is in dire straits. This enterprise has been almost totally supported by Dr. Brian Leverich and Karen Isaacson, his wife. It has always been free to all comers and they would like to keep it that way. However, that really may not be possible. I have "nagged" you all from time to time about becoming a rootsweb member. It only costs $12.00 per year and you can get your own mailing list if you like. Better yet, you can become a sponsor for $24.00 and there are quite a few perks. But even if you cannot see your way clear to do that right now, anything you can afford would be appreciated. Even if all of you just sent a buck or two to the address below it would enough to be of help. We don't want to lose this excellent resource, do we? send a check in U.S. dollars to: RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative P.O. Box 6798 Frazier Park, CA 93222-6798 or visit here to see if you would like to do more. http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html The letter I received from another mail list this morning..... -------------------------------------------------------------- >>Recent acquisitions and mergers in the computer world have left >>Rootsweb unexpectedly short of funding due to the withdrawl of >>Palladium sponsorship. Palladium was acquired by The Learning >>Company which in turn was purchased by Mattel Inc. I feel there is an effort to corner the market on Genealogy on the Internet, and you will soon have to pay to access the websites that are free, now that Mattel, Inc. owns 85% of the Genealogy software. I would guess they want to become the Microsoft of the genealogy world. Here's a letter written by one of the founders of Rootsweb outlining the current situation: >> >> << My friends - >> >> I generally do not bring you news about RootsWeb, whose servers >> house some 4000 mail lists, including this one, because I know >> you all get the RootsWeb Review about once a week, which pretty >> well covers what is going on within RootsWeb. >> As most of you know, RootsWeb was created by, and is "owned" by >> Dr. Brian Leverich and his wife Karen Isaacson, both superb >> computer people and genealogists. They created RootsWeb and >> they have funded 90% of it out of their own pockets since its >> creation. This means that they have a houseful of computer >> equipment, as well as other equipment in a hub elsewhere, that >> runs all of these lists, as well as web pages and other items >> for the USGenWeb - the effort is huge and growing by leaps >> and bounds. However, their corporate sponsor, Palladium, has >> disappeared into a merger with another company, and that >> funding has evaporated. It seems unclear whether any other >> corporation will step forward to help underwrite these huge costs. >> >> In the message which Brian sent to the listowner list, he makes >> the first mention of danger to the whole RootsWeb concept. He is >> rarely pessimistic, and if he is concerned, then we all need to >> be concerned. He finds it particularly depressing that only a >> small percentage (2%-6%) are helping to support RootsWeb in any >> way, even though there are literally hundreds of thousands of >> people regularly using the mail lists and the other web pages >> and items which RootsWeb hosts. You can see that he has taken out >> a $25,000 loan just to try to keep the equipment growing with the >> needs of RootsWeb. >> >> The bottom line is that if we, as users of these RootsWeb services, >> cannot help with a few dollars(and it does not have to be much at >> all, if we all get involved)in support of this fine group, we are >> in very real danger of losing these mail lists and literally >> hundreds of web pages of genealogical material(including the JP >> Images Page and many, many others)that is today available. Please >> give this some thought, and see if you can find a few dollars that >> you could donate to RootsWeb to keep this effort alive. I have >> long said that Brian and Karen cannot forever continue to incure >> financial hits in the range of ten of thousands of dollars at a >> time, and still be able to keep RootsWeb alive. Take a look at: >> >> www.rootsweb.com >> >> and you can see how to donate if you wish to do so. I urge you to >> consider it. It is a great investment. Let's see if we can make >> it a merrier Christmas for Karen and him and for online genealogists >> everywhere. William L. Boulineau Antigo, WI 54409 Rootsweb Sponsor [email protected]
