I have been a silent observer of this message board for quite awhile. My grandfather Hugh E. Powell was born in Argyle, WI and I found this letter (below) in some genealogy info he passed on to me. I am not sure all of this is correct, but maybe it will help someone. I would love to know where this cemetery is because I looked for it about 20 yrs ago and couldn't find it. Also, if anyone has answers to their questions at the end of the letter, please share. Hope this helps someone. Marlene Sheppard mcsb@cwnet.com Aug 13, 1944 Dear Daisy: It will be a surprise to you, I am sure, to get a letter from me, but Chester and I have been delving into family affairs while we have been home for a visit with Mother and Mabelle. We all have thought you would be interested and Mother suggested I write you what we have found. You may know of these facts, but if you dont, perhaps you will be glad to have them and then too, perhaps you can help us to learn more. We located the Sowl-Threadgold family burial ground up in Mud Branch on the present Mrs. Helga Lundes farm. Maurice Sardeson, son of Alie at Blanchardville is farming same now. Chester, Mabelle and I went up there Thursday afternoon and located ten graves for eleven of the family - one stone was for two children. Those we found were as follows: George W. d. Oct 2, 1852 aged 13 mos (and) John Wm. D. Mar. 29, 1851 aged 3 days Children of J. S. and A. F. Sowl Joseph, son E & L Sowl d. Nov. 9, 1848 - 16 yrs. Freeman F. Son of Wm and (E or) F. Sowl d. Nov 10, 1856 - 2 mos. 18 days Stephen B. Son of Wm & F. Sowl d. Apr 1, 1853 - 4 mos. 25 days Elijah son of John & A.F. Sowl d. Nov 17, 1856 - 24 yrs. 11 mos. Sleep husband dear, and take thy rest God called thee home. He thought it best. Twas hard, indeed, to part with thee but Christs strong arms supported me. Caroline M. dau. Of John S and A.F. Sowl d. Jan 5, 1857 - 12 yrs 2 mos. Casroline is dead. A child so sweet and fair is opening rosebuds in the morning air. Marilla, dau of J. and R. Sowl, d. Oct 18, 1861 - 14 yrs. Farewell Father, Mother and Brother. Thomas, son of R. and M. Threadgold d. Feb 25, 1845 - 2 mos. 5 ds. This lovely bud so young and fair, called hence by early dawn. Just came to show how sweet a flowerIn paradise would bloom. Lucinda, wife of Elijah Sowl died April 9, 1850 - 60 yrs. Elijah Sowl, died May 19, 1854 - 67 yrs 29 days The last two above, as you no doubt know without my calling your attention to it are the parents of Marilla Sowl Threadgood Sardeson and therefore great grandparents to you, Mabelle, Chester, etc. We didnt find your grandfathers grave-Robert Threadgold. Mother Sardeson seems certain he was buried there. Do you know? Mother is a bit confused over the location of Elijah and Lucindas original place of settlement here. Somehow she had the impression it should be at River Bend but from the location of this burial ground it seems that Mud Branch must be right. Do you know anything about this? Do you know what part of Ohio they came from and anything which might give us a clue to Lucindas parents or Elijahs parents? At the Darlington Court House I found the record of a John Soule of Geauga Co., Ohio. His wife was Abigail F and they had a son Elijah Soule who married in 1854 Ada Smith in Wiota. Mother says he (John) would be a brother of Marillas and we presume then that if he was from Geauga Co., Ohio, that the remainder of the family also was. I hope to be able to check Geauga Co. records. Do you have any old Bible records or do you know of the existence of any and who might have them? I know there are many questions in this letter, but am hoping you can answer some of them, if not all, as we are trying to get all information possible. In looking up some information on my side of the family, I found in New York history that an Elijah Soule was a Revolutionary soldier - and that a George Soule came over in the Mayflower - also that George Soules own brother spelled his name as Sowle. Wouldnt it be interesting if we could connect the family with either of these? Mother and Mabelle join Chester and myself in sending you and Carol greetings and I shall look forward to hearing from you.
