    1. REQUEST FOR OBIT LOOKUPS
    2. Dear Listers, Just wanted to pass along some helpful hints for sending me requests for searches. I have found that if you provide me with some or all of the following then the search is quite more successful. NAME (including middle initial if possible) MAIDEN NAME & MARRIED NAME (including spouses name if known) DATE OF DEATH (at least approximate) DATE OF BIRTH (if known) TOWN OF LOCATION (last known) If you do not have any these, please provide what you do have. Any little bit helps and will give you better results. I have received many requests over the past few days and have had quite a lot of success. Thanks to all of you and Happy New Year!

    2. Dianne, There are several church records for La Crosse available at the LDS Family History Center films. You should check them out for your church research on your family. I've found a lot of church information for my family by doing so - including baptisms and marriages. > > From: "Dianne Erickson" <[email protected]> > Date: 2004/12/08 Wed PM 04:54:05 EST > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [WILACROS] Re: WILACROS-D Digest V04 #34 > > I think I own a shelf in the library; I have ordered so many obituaries. > > I need Anton's death certificate, which means I need to find when and where > he died. 3. I think I own a shelf in the library; I have ordered so many obituaries. I need Anton's death certificate, which means I need to find when and where he died. Born in 1805, he was still alive in 1880. I found Anton's daughter, Theresa, buried under Theresa Roellig Schuman in the Oak Grove Cemetery. My Roellig/Roellichs came from Guntersdorf, Austria. There is a Stephen Roellig in the Oak Grove Cemetery. He was born in about 1813. He could be Anton's brother, but I need to see whether Anton and Stephen have the same parents, which means I need to order two death certificates and hope really hard that the informant knew the names of the parents. I also need to establish whether the Roellichs were Catholic or Lutheran and which ones converted because Anton's children do not appear to share the same religion. Either Clara converted and joined the Lutheran Church or else upon marrying the Kreibich sisters, Anton II and Wenzel converted to Catholicism or else permitted the children to be raised Catholic. The burials of the remaining siblings, Theresa and Franz, in nonCatholic Cemeteries, in addition to the father Anton's move to Alma, where some suggest he would have had to row a boat over the Mississippi or ride his horse a long ways to get to a Catholic Church, might suggest that the converts were Anton and Wenzel. But who knows? Other Roelligs in La Crosse can be found in various records of Lutheran Churches. My work is cut out for me. It's just a matter of getting time to do it. 1. Genealogists, take action!
    2. Dear Researchers, I believe that the following information is important to all of us! Roxanne New Bill Will Close Records to Genealogists HR10 has passed out of the U.S. House of Representatives and is now part of S.2845. The amendments suggested by David Rencher in his letter to the bill's sponsor, Congressman J. Dennis Hastert, were NOT incorporated into this legislation. Thus, the terms of HR10 will now be considered by the Senate, as part of S.2845. If S.2845 becomes law, as now written, family historians will face some real challenges in attempts to obtain birth records, even on long-deceased individuals. Specifically, what genealogists need to do is suggest to their lawmakers the addition of Sec. 3061(b)(1)(A)(iii) that would read: "who is alive on the date that access to their birth certificate is requested." This addition would clarify that the legislation (soon to be law) applies ONLY to birth certificates of CURRENTLY LIVING PERSONS. If you do not know your U.S. Senator's e-mail address, you can find it at http://www.senate.gov/ This bill can be found online at http://thomas.loc.gov/ Put in S.2845 (in the bill number window) and then select item No. 3; and go to Subtitle B -- Identity Management Security; Chapter 2 -- Improved Security for Birth Certificates. Previously published in RootsWeb Review: 8 December 2004, Vol. 7, No. 49.

    3. All the La Crosse Roellichs are my relatives. We are trying to get back further than my great-great grandfather and our mutual ancestor, Anton, and find out more about his parents, Anton and Veronica, and siblings, Wenzel, Theresa, Clara, Wilhelmina, and Franz and whether the Roelligs in La Crosse, also from Bohemia, are cousins. This means digging out information right around the Civil War. 3. Thank you, everyone. I am still struggling to locate the parents of the Roellichs--and now it seems I have two brothers who either married Catholics or were Catholics and one sister who was Lutheran. Another brother is buried in a nonCatholic cemetery in the State of Washington. The father of these siblings went to Alma for a while, which I have been told had no Catholic Church in the convenient area. The 1st Evangelical Lutheran Church might be an excellent place to look. The Roellichs came into the country right after the civil war, and the ship record reads Roellig. I hope these records are filmed. I will look. This was the German Lutheran Church which I have records going back to 1871 at the West Ave. location and earlier acts of baptism etc. from the Trempealeau location in 1868, believe that it was built in the late 1860's, but the archives at the library could tell you exactly. 1. Help with pictures
    2. Hello everyone! The LAGS received two pictures from a woman in Madison, asking for our help in identifying them. I've posted them to the website, hoping that somebody is able to help. The first one is a wedding picture, with "Cashton, WI" written on the back of the portrait in ink. The second picture is of two children. The photographer's mark "Johnson, West Salem, Wis." is on the front of the portrait. You may view these pictures on the LAGS website: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wilacgs, then click on "General Announcements". If anyone can identify even a time period by looking at the clothes, this would help. It'd be best if they were your own family, though, wouldn't it? :-) Roxanne LAGS Webmaster

    3. An Obituary in the Batavia Daily Times, Batavia, Genesee Co., NY, of Nancy Hess who died 19 April 1919 Rochester, Monroe Co., NY, names a dau. Agnes Ward of La Crosse, Wisc. I have no information whatever on Agnes Ward. I can detail Nancy Hess' life, but not a dau. Agnes included. This was an unusual find. Alexander Griswold and Sarah Lodema had a dau. Nancy b. 22 Oct. 1846 in Caledonia, Livingston Co., NY. Nancy married at least twice. She had children by Joseph Gibbs, Loan Hess and possibly John Feltman. I have information on her children (sans Agnes). I've been working on this family for many years and there are several interesting twists and turns! Issue: Mary Louise Gibbs m. Agnes-nothing known I did not find an Agnes Ward in Wisc. in the 1910, 1920, 1930 that would fit and have no idea who her husband was. I'm hoping something here means something to a Ward family in Wisc. I'll share whatever I have. Deanna Smith
