    3. Thank you so much for all the information your send out. I use it and found some good data. Pat Hill Melissa McLimans <[email protected]> wrote: We at the Wisconsin Historical Society are so excited to announce the addition of marriage records to the Wisconsin Pre-1907 Vital Records Index located at www.wisconsinhistory.org/vitalrecords. Now, you can look for marriages in counties Richland through Winnebago at the same time you search for marriages from the rest of the state. Marriages, dating between 1836 and September 30, 1907, are indexed by both the bride and groom names, wherever possible. Therefore, in most cases, there will be two entries for one marriage; one for the bride and one for the groom. There are some counties that were not indexed by bride's name, but our excellent volunteers are working to correct that as well. The new marriage index, like its companions, began as a 1970s microfiche publication. 3. For those of you like me who never read "search tips," I found that the fewer letters you put in, the better. For example, for a name spelled multiple ways, like "Rybold" or "Reibold," put in: "Ryb" "Rei" You can pick up all the variations, plus badly misspelled entries you would never have hit on otherwise. 1. Deaths Added to Wisconisn Vital Records Index
    2. Melissa McLimans
    3. Last month the Wisconsin Historical Society introduced our new Pre-1907 Wisconsin Vital Records Index, which can be found at www.wisconsinhistory.org/vitalrecords. We began the index with nearly 1 million birth records and are excited to announce the addition of nearly 400,000 Wisconsin death records. The new death index, like its companion, began as a 1970s microfiche publication. The Schoenleber Foundation of Milwaukee generously provided funds to convert them to electronic form, so now genealogists have free public access to a comprehensive pre-1907 index to Wisconsin births and deaths. Marriages, for all Wisconsin counties, are up next. You can discover ancestors by individual name, by browsing by county and year, or by exact date. Births and deaths can both be searched at the same time and then viewed separately, if desired. State law prohibits publication on the Web of original birth or death certificates, so when you discover someone about whom you want more details, you can order a paper copy of the complete certificate from the Society online. Most are delivered within two weeks, and Society members receive a 10-percent discount on each order. Or, you can use the index as a research tool that points you to the birth and death records that you need. Vital records are not the only genealogical source available on the Society Web site. To learn more about what we have online check out our genealogy page at www.wisconsinhistory.org/genealogy. Hope you enjoy the new additions. Melissa McLimans

    3. I want to give a very personal and public thanks to my WILACROS-L angel from Onalaska's Brice Prairie area, Debbie, who saw my request several weeks back asking for information re. the Lyttle family. She thought she had seen some geographical markers, went out and found them and took pictures of Lytle Bridge, Lytle Landing, Lytle Street and Lytle Station........all part of my great-grandfathe John Lyttle's heritage; he came to the area in about 1850 and was one of its pioneers. She also visited the Asbury cemetery and wrote down information and took pictures for me. Because she was so interested, and just for fun, I sent her a picture of my gr-grandparents and their old house from about 1860..........and wonder of all wonders.......she said, "I think that house is just down the road from me." She went out again and sent me a picture of a house one-half mile from her home.........sure enough, it's the very same house (just painted a different color now) from the 1860 period. And she talked to the current owner and found the abstract showing that my great-grandparents, John and Julia Lytle (Lyttle) were the first owners. Debbie personifies the goodness of people and their generosity of spirit. I am very thankful to have found her, and she has my undying gratitude for all her sleuthing on my behalf. Now she has grandparents she is searching for in Montana--my home--and I'm trying to help return the favor. Isn't this just exactly what this process is all about??!! Long live LISTS!!! :) :) Jeanne in Montana

    1. New Online Birth Index
    2. Melissa McLimans
    3. I've noticed that this has been posted to some email lists already (so please excuse any duplication), but thought I would send out some more information. The Wisconsin Historical Society has just made available an index to Wisconsin pre-1907 births at www.wisconsinhistory.org/vitalrecords. It was made by digitizing the 1970's microfiche index (with which some of you're probably familiar) and then expanding it with tens of thousands of delayed births. The Schoenleber Foundation of Milwaukee generously covered most of the conversion costs, and the Wisconsin State Genealogical Society graciously let us include their delayed birth records index. The result is free public access to more than 1,000,000 Wisconsin births. As you'll see, you can search in a variety of ways. When you find someone for whom you want a birth certificate, you can order hard copy from us online or use the results to locate the film yourself. We plan to add pre-1907 death and marriage indexes in the next few months, creating a comprehensive vital records index that will be entirely free and publicly searchable. Until the death and marriage indexes are available, you can request searches through our Wisconsin Genealogical Research Service at www.wisconsinhistory.org/genealogy/ogrs. Let us know how you like the index and happy searching! Melissa McLimans Administrator, Wisconsin Genealogical Research Service Wisconsin Historical Society

    2. There was only one other elementary school back then and it was called Gebhardt(that is the wrong one as it was on the other side of town and newer). It was the old elementary school...so I am not sure of the name. She was the sweetest lady!! I never forgot her. She played the piano and we would sing. I think we did it everyday. She also played classical music for us and told us to draw to the music. She did not live to far from us. We lived in the Price Hill area I think it was called. Let me know if there is any more I can do. Cynthia

    2. Yes, I believe so. My own grandfather William (Bill) Larkin moved to Livingston Montana in the 1920's/1930's. In fact, my mother was born in Livingston. However, my grandfather lost his arm in a railway accident around 1931 and he and his family (his wife Nellie, son Bill and daughter Ellen) had to move back to Minnesota. Also there was a tragic fire in Galesville around 1942 which killed my grandfather's uncle Michael Larkin and his sister Mary Larkin. The fire also consumed the old family homestead. Does any of this sound familiar?

    3. Livingston is about four hours west of Miles City. The Larkin Brothers came to Miles City in the early 1880's, however........they had one of the first documented clothing stores in town. I don't believe they went any further west, so maybe no connection after all. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, February 02, 2006 8:29 AM Subject: Re: [WILACROS] Larkin and Cosgrove families of Trempealeau and LaCrosse Count... > Yes, I believe so. 2. Hello, I couldn't help responding to this thread. My first grade teacher was a Mrs. Larkin. I lived in Black River Falls, Wisconsin at that time. I believe that it is in Jackson County which neighbors Trempealeau. This would have been around 1961. Not only that...several years ago, I went to an auction house in North St.Paul. I bought several items there...one of them being an old standing radio. I think it may have been a Stromberg/Carlson, or something like that. It was purchased in Black River Falls. I gave it to my son, so the booklet that came with it and a paper tag stuck to the inside is not in front of me. It had the LARKIN name on it somewhere. Either that was the name of the store it was purchased from in Black River or the name of the original purchaser. This probably is of no help to you..but you may want to include that region in your search. Cynthia Nelson
