I'm reposting a search. My cousins and I are researching the McKinney/McKenney name from northern NY and Maine, and we believe Heman McKinney (age 26, with wife Jane and two daughters Elsa and Hetta) was in the Campbell/LaCrosse area ca 1860 (US census report). Also, a Jane McKenney is listed in the LaCrosse community directory for 1866. Heman was one of ten children, from whom our various cousins are descended. He's the only one of the ten whom we have not located and traced. I'd be grateful for any knowledge of McKinneys/McKenneys in 19th century LaCrosse, and I'll be glad to share information with anyone interested. Thanks in advance. Ted Mills

I don't have the info in front of me now; however, I think Soren Sorenson may have spent some time in Custer County (Miles City) Montana. My great aunt, Lucy Lytle Sorenson, married a Richard J. Sorenson--probably in the 20's. Soren may have been related. Danish as I recall. Yes. That helps a lot. I have a ship record with more children, but now I need to know where those four died--Austria or Wisconsin. But now I see that they may actually be from Bohemia. Thus the picture is either getting muddier or more clear--not sure which. Thank you. Taking advantage of Ancestry.com's free ship record offer, I am striving to find the 1884 ship record for my ancestor, Wenzel Hoelzel and his wife, Elenora Mueller Hoelzel. I know of three daughters, two were named Anna and Mary. Would anyone kindly find Wenzel and Elenore in the 1900 census online if possible? They lived in La Crosse. Wenzel was born in 1840, Elenora in 1846, and Mary in 1881. I have a ship record with a lot more children, a Wenzel, about the right age, an Anna, and a Mary, not quite the right ages in 1884. Thank you. Dianne

The Wild Rose Historical Society presents the 1905 Wild Rose Robbery Reenactment on Saturday, July 29th at 10:30 AM. It is a story about how four robbers came in on the train, robbed the post office and attempted to rob the bank. They walked out of town in the dark after the early morning robbery. A small posse found their trail and later a posse of 38 found them again in the late afternoon. There was a shoot out and one robber was killed and 2 wounded, the fourth robber surrendered after trying to escape. There is a connection to Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and an unknown dead robber with no proper name. If you are related to any posse member we would especially love for you to attend. This is a list of the posse; Frank Clark. Jack Berens, Johnny Protheroe, Irving R. Nash, D.O. Jones, Rob Stevenson, Jeff Sage, Thomas H. Davis, John Roberts, Albert Lowe, Lewis Protheroe, Theodore Woodward, Will Hughes, Al Fero, James Roberts, Elmer Funk, Oscar Holt, Fred Sage, Dr. David Jones, James Kelley, Ed Lowe, Clint Darling, Charley Darling, Henry Galbrilski, Arnold J. Those in the reenactment need to be at the site at 9:30 AM. Wild Rose is located on Highway 22 between Wautoma and Waupaca. If you take Highway 39 you can take the Plainfield exit if you are coming from the north then go through Plainfield and take Highway 73 to Wautoma and Highway 22 south to Wild Rose. If you are on Highway 39 and coming from the south, take the Coloma exit and follow Highway 21 to Highway 22 in Wautoma and go north on Highway 22 to Wild Rose. The performance will take place at the end of River St. across from the Oakhill Cemetery. The robber with no real name is buried outside of Oakhill Cemetery. We will have directions to the grave if you want to pay your respects. There will be signs pointing the way. River street goes South off from Main Street which is also Highway 22 so it is not difficult to find. There will be parking available but we suggest you bring your own chairs. The area is a little rugged so we discourage sandals and open toed shoes. The performance area is in a field lined with big trees so that ! spectators should be in the shade for the performance. There will be refreshments for sale. A good will offering will be taken. In the afternoon you may wish to tour the Wild Rose Historical Society Museum which is located on Main Street across from the Pioneer Pub. The museum consists of the Elisha Stewart House, a barn and blacksmith shop, carriage horse, general store, weaving room, a one room school, pioneer hall, drug store, smoke house and gift shop. I've "rescued" a group of old photograph which I believe all belong to the MARSTON Family. The photographs are as follows: * D. W. MARSTON, Bayley's Studio, La Crosse, WI, taken in 1860's or 1870's, teens or early 20's * Abbie MARSTON BARNES, Jas W. Turner Studio, Boston, MA, taken in 1880's, 30's (two copies of the photograph one includes the notation "Mother") * Unidentified Woman, Bayley's Studio, La Crosse, WI, taken in 1860's or 1870's, 50's * Unidentified Woman, Jas W. Turner Studio, Boston, MA, taken in 1880's, 70's or 80's (two copies, one has the name "Arthur" written on the back as if that might be who it was gifted to) * Unidentified Woman, Jas W. Turner Studio, Boston, MA, taken in 1870's or 1880's, teens or 20's Based on limited research and thanks to the help of a MARSTON Family Researcher I believe that the first photograph is one of Daniel W. MARSTON b. 30 May 1848 in Phillips, ME. Daniel W. married Eva BATES and they settled in La Crosse, WI and had two children, a boy and a girl. The second photograph is of Daniel's sister, Mary Abbie MARSTON BARNES b. 8 Sept 1843 in Phillips, ME and married Dr. Walter W. BARNES. The couple is said to have had one son. I was able to locate the family in Phillips, ME during the 1860 census as follows: Daniel MARSTON, a Merchant, born ME Rosannah D. MARSTON, age 37, House Wife, born ME William MARSTON, age 19, a House Servant, born ME Mary A. MARSTON, age 16, a House Servant, born ME Daniel W. MARSTON, age 12, born ME James S. WORTHLEY, age 16, born ME Georgeannah MARSTON, age 5, born ME In 1870 I was able to locate Daniel W. MARSTON and his father living in La Crosse, WI with census records providing the following information: Chas A. WATSON, age 51, a Grocer, born MA Mary E. WATSON, age 43, Keeping House, born ME Senia SALVERSON, age 34, Domestic Servant, born Norway Daniel MARSTON, age 54, a Grocer, born ME Susan MARSTON, age 52, Boarding, born ME Daniel W. MARSTON, age 22, a Grocery Clerk, born ME Benj WATSON, age 84, a Retired Farmer, born MA In 1900 Daniel W. Hello: This is my first time on this site. I have many ancestors (and relatives) in La Crosse county, and here are their surnames: Zurbuchen (Peter and John) Rediske (Henry R./Heinrich, Karl, Wilhelmina) Streeck (Edward, Caroline, Bertha) Meyer (Heinrich/Henry, John, Louise, William?) Miller/Muller/Mueller (John/Johan, Juliane, Marie) Keppel (Anton, Francis, Katherine) Hacker (Francis) Schneider (Juliane) Scheunemann/Sherman (Caroline) Brandenburg/von Brandenburg (Henrietta) Please contact me if you might also be related to these families. Many of these people lived in the Barre Mills, Bangor and La Crosse city. I can certainly send more detailed information, but didn't want to take the space in this forum. Thank you and I hope be related to some of you! -Elissa Zurbuchen [email protected]
Hey gang, Just a short reminder to the vets and newbies at this site of my free research for the asking here at Andersonville. Of the 41000 Union soldiers on record, 957 are from Wisconsin. Please email me directly at [email protected] with request so we dont tie up the county site.
