In 1880 John, Louise, and Lucius are living on 6th street and they have a servant. I can find Joseph D Smith and his mother Anna on the 1880 census living in La Crosse and Frank and his wife Rebecca also living in La Crosse and they were both working for the Railroad. On the 1900 census I find Louisa Cole at Westport, Dane, WIsconsin residing in the Wisconsin State Hosp for the Insane (referred to as Mendota now) I can't find any thing further on them, they have moved to other jobs with railroad. I can't find any cemetery plots for them either. ********************** The Chronicle Tuesday August 7, 1900 page 5 col 5 Mortuary Word has been received in the city of Mrs. J.J. Cole, widow of Judge Cole. The death occured at the hospital at Mendota where Mrs. Cole has been since April. Cancer, combined with a general mental and physical weakness was the cause of death. Surviving her are two sons, Lucius and Herbert, both of whom are abscent from the city. Lucius is in San Carlos, a member of Company D, of the Seventh United States Regulars, Herbert, with a party of La Crosse boys, went west several days ago with the intention of finding work as harvest hands, but it is believed that he is now in Minneapolis. The elder has been notified of the death but telegraphed that he cannot come home, owing to the fact that he cannot secure a furlough Hon. J.J. Esch has the arrangements for the burial in charge. The remains arrived here last night. The funeral will be from Miller Bros.' establishment at 3 o'clock this afternoon. Rev. J.J. Wilkins will officiating. ------------- I also have John Cole's obit and his first wife. If you want copies of these just let me know your address at jayne_olson @hotmail.com and I will send them to you. John's is quite lengthy. Put Cole in the subject line so I don't delete it as junk. I could not find a marriage license for John and Louisa, but his first wife died in 1865 and they were married by 1870, so sometime in that span of time they were married. Records were not required to be recorded prior to 1907 in Wisconsin, so itis hit and miss on that area. But they did record the births of their two sons, and john and louisa's death certificates are on record. I will try at some time to view Herbert's death certificate to verify that it is him. The census records do seem to match. Jayne Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Any way St Joseph Cemetery is indeed on hwy 33 but unfortunately there is a detour on that road right now. I can give you a couple of different directions to get there if you would like 1> If you are at Woodlawn cemetery go on hwy 14 south. You will be driving out of LA Crosse heading toward Madison. Hwy 14 will turn off to the left when the hwy sepearates so stay in the left hand lane. You will go about 5 miles after you make a left turn and there will be a sign to County Road M. Take that to the left and this will take you up to St. Joseph Ridge. Turn rt when you get to the stop sign and you will go about 3 ro 4 blocks and the church will be on the rt and the cemetery is on the left. Let me know if this is to confusing. I think the detour has people routed all the way to Coon Valley and then up hwy 162 but that is extra miles out of your way. you can reach me at my email jayne_olson@hotmail.com good luck Jayne Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
