My great-grandmother, Carolina Meuli, married Gustave F. Betz on 12 September 1906 after the death of her first husband, my great-grandfather. They had a daughter, Norma, born around 1910. Gustave was a gardener in the La Crosse area, according to my aunt. I don't have any further information about the Betz family, however. Elizabeth's mother did not attend the 4th of July picnicthat day as she was not feeling well. Her four children: my father-in-law, Immanuel, John, Elizabeth and Kate were all there. When the word came out that the skiff had been pulled under the barge with the four young people on it, someone ran to her house and told her that her four children had been drowned in the river. She collapsed at that awful news, but was at least a little relieved to later learn that only one had drowned. We stopped at the LaCrosse library on a trip a few years ago and obtained microfiche copies of the newspapers. There was a good deal of coverage at the time, and I probably have the name of the survivor filed somewhere.I've always wondered what kind of life he had.
