However, if anyone is still interested in the ancestry of Edward Gein I have the answer. Edward Theodore Gein (1906-1984) was the son of George Gein (1873-1940) and Auguste Lehrke (1877-1945). Auguste's parents were Frederick Lehrke and Amalia Fregin, who were both born in Prussia. George was born 'George Gee.' He was the son of John Gee and Maria Catharine Dingeldein (Dingledine) of La Crosse Co, WI. John's parents were Merritt Gee and Mary ____. Maria Catharine's parents were George Dingeldein and Margaret Treusch of Vernon Co, WI. George Gee (Gein) was orphaned at an early age and by 1880 was living with his uncle (his mother's brother) Leonard Dingeldein (Dingledine) and Leonard's wife in Vernon Co. Sometime soon after marrying in 1900 George changed his surname from 'Gee' to 'Gein,' perhaps at the urging of his new wife Auguste. I have the marriage records for Ed Gein's parents and paternal grandparents to prove all of the above. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. We'd appreciate any help! Let's Meet at Oak Grove Cemetery - People are Dying to Get in! Tuesday, June 23 from 5:30-8 pm; Sat., July 18 9am-noon The June 23 meeting of the Society will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery at 1407 La Crosse Street. We will meet in the cemetery parking lot at 5:30pm and will wrap up by 8 pm, but come when you can and leave when you must. If you arrive after 5:40pm, drive around the older sections of the cemetery to look for Anita for supplies or directions. We will also have a half-day work day at Oak Grove Cemetery Saturday July 18 from 9am-noon. The rain date will be July 25 at the same time. We will concentrate in the older sections of the cemetery which are not far from the parking lot and on even ground (no hills). Choices of activities in our workday include taking digital photographs, verify information from the stones, or cleaning stones. *If you choose to take or help with photography, bring a digital camera. *If you want to verify information that was previously transcribed, then bring writing utensils and a clip board. *If you choose to clean stones, please bring a sprinkling can or bucket you can lift up when filled with water and a soft nylon scrub brush. I will supply the cleaner and some old seat cushions that made fantastic knee pads! The cemetery has water available. Contact Anita Doering at doering@lacrosselibrary.org for more information.
I've "rescued" an old photograph identified as Mr. & Mrs. Math MONSON of Holmen, Wisconsin. The photograph was taken at the Myers Studio in La Crosse, WI likely sometime in the 1880's with the couple appearing to be in their 30's at the time. In addition to their names, someone has written "her parents were original settlers outside Holmen, Wis, they were Nels and Anna SVEEN" and "Minnie SVEEN a neighbors daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Nels SVEEN" and "I'd like to have this preserved" and "Mollie EVENSON daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Cornelius Johnson OSTBY". I believe that the notes were written by Mollie OSTBY EVENSON as other photographs also have here handwritten notes on the back. I believer that the SVEEN Family were neighbors to her parents and that it is their daughter Minnie SVEEN married to Math MONSON and pictured in the photograph. I'm hoping to locate someone from this MONSON - SVEEN Family so that the photograph can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

I thought this would be of interest to some people: May 26 - "Noah's not the only one with an ARC" The La Crosse Area Genealogical Society's May meeting will be held at 7:00pm at the Area Research Center (ARC) in Murphy Library on the UW-La Crosse campus. The doors will actually open at 5 minutes to 7 (so don't get there too early) and we will be the only ones with access to the ARC that evening. Paul Beck, the Special Collections Librarian, will give us an overview of the ARC and its holdings and we will then be able to do research while we are there. Paul will be the only one working that evening so if you have specific items that you would like to research while you are there, it would be most helpful if you would let Paul know in advance (an e-mail to Paul at beck.paul@uwlax.edu) letting him know that you will be there with LAGS and giving the catalog number, etc of what you want. Paul will plan to have those items pulled prior to our arrival to save time. Come prepared to research our very own ARC.

The Adobe Reader software is required to view, manipulate and print PDF data is included on each CD. States with maps and atlases currently available are shown in the graphic to the right. 19th century geographic and statistical data are useful to historians, genealogists and researchers with an interest in the landscape and cultural setting of this period. Early county maps may contain many places that no longer exist or that have been obscured over time. Atlases with statistical data provide vivid detail of 19th century pioneer lifestyles. Details on early maps are often difficult to read and these are no exception; however, by virtue of the Adobe PDF formatting, these documents may be inspected and printed at high levels of magnification without additional digital distortion; something that simply cannot be accomplished with paper reproductions and photocopies. There is a vast amount of information that can be gleaned from these sources and the diligent researcher will find these cartographic resources useful in their studies. ------------------------------------------------------------ 19th CENTURY ATLAS, MAPS, HISTORICAL GUIDES & GAZETTEERS (includes publications from IA, IN, MN, OH and WI) Historians, genealogists and researchers of the 19th century Midwestern United States will find the vast amount of historical research material in these books and atlases on CD a very valuable resource. Each of these extensive gazetteer and immigrant guides contain the description of places and place names, many of which are no longer found on contemporary maps, including: cities, towns, villages, settlements, schools, post offices, transportation routes and schedules, and much more. Historical Guides and Gazetteer CD's may also include maps of the period providing cartographic reference to 19th century places identified and discussed in the literature. Also included are hundreds of advertisements by contributing businesses providing historical insight into the goods, services and the merchants that made them available during the 19th century. Anyone interested in the history of these regions will find this material useful. ------------------------------------------------------------ Good luck with your research!
