    3. I believe UWL and the La Crosse Library main building have the newspapers on microfiche. It's possible the search I used just didn't recognize it. If you can't get to these places I don't know how you'd get to see them. Maybe someone else can help here now. Lita http://www.picturetrail.com/grammapux Do what you love. 3. My known SCHMITT line starts with a Theodor Schmitt born bet. 1806-1809 in Prussia. His wife was Anna Maria, born abt 1819-1824 in Prussia. When they left Prussia, that is unknown. But the ship record I found, shows that they left on the ship "Louisa" from Rotterdam, Netherlands in 1843 with my gg-grandmother Elizabeth Schmitt and their other daughter Maria Eva. They arrived in NY and went to Wisconsin. I first find them in Milwaukee in the 1850 census. By then a daughter Julia is with them. She may have been a daughter from a previous marriage of Theo. as she was born abt 1833 in Prussia. Or she could have been a relative but listed as a daughter. Then there born, according to census', in Wisconsin, was son John, abt 1845. In 1851 twins, Joseph and Franklin were born, probably in Milwaukee, as the family is there in the 1850 census and the 1855 state census. There was also another daughter Julia (according to a census) born abt 1849, she looks to have died before as a chlid. Then there were sons Henry, born abt 1856 and George born abt 1858. By the 1860 census the family is in La Crosse. Theodor died before the 1860 census, in April 16, 1860. By the 1880 census sons John, Henry and George are gone, as are daughters Maria Eva (Mary), Julia and my gg-grandmother Elizabeth. Franklin married a Rebecca Lee. Joseph, in abt 1889, married a Bertha Sattler. Elizabeth married my gg-grandfather John Jay Cole. Theodor, Anna Maria and sons Franklin and Joseph are buried in the same plot at Catholic Cemetery under the surname spelling of SCHMITT. Before I found the ship record that used the spelling of SCHMITT, I had come across, the census', some other records that used the spellings of SCHMIDT, SCHMITZ. The 1860 census onward, including several La Crosse city directories, used the English version of SMITH. Joseph' death cert. used SMITH as well. Does this sound like any of your Schmidt relations?
