    1. [WILACROS] Carl/Charles Benson ,La Crosse County
    2. Erik Hov
    3. Hello. Trying to locate Christian Larsen`s halfbrother ,my relative Karl Berntsen. Kar/Carl was born in Norway 14 Nov 1864 and came to La Crosse 1877 with his halfbrother Christian Larson 1861-1928. Carl was probably confirmed in La Crosse. Christian lived in La Crosse ,La Crosse County ,WI ,but not sure about Karl/Carl. The last info I have on Karl etc is from the 1880 census when Karl was living as a servant with the John Nelson family in Holland ,La Crosse County. The halfbrother Christian was also in Holland ,but living with an aunt and uncle August and Antonette Anderson. In the 1880 census Karl/Carl is mentioned as "Charles Benson". So what I want to find out is more about Carl etc in US if he married ,children etc. Thanks in advance for any help. Erik in Norway

Author: unclarity Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wisconsin.counties.lacrosse/2728.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: you are welcome...I was hoping that was your Cristian/Christian that I saw in Holland. It made since that if it was this would be your Karl/Carl/Charles. Unfortunately I don't have ancestry.com right now either. I use heritagequest, but that can be difficult to search...you must have the exact spelling that the transcriber used or it will not show up. Perhaps someone here who has a subscription to ancestry will look up the censuses for you. I too have many ancestors from Norway and have found first name changes as common as last name changes. I have brothers where one took the family name, the other the farm name, and one took his dads (in Norway) last name...3 brothers, 3 different last names in America. One person was listed with 5 similar, but different first names. To bad they didn't know what these records would be used for in later years!!! There are a couple Carl Benson's and a couple Charles Benson's obits listed on the La Crosse libraries web site. http://lacrosselibrary.org/genealogy/ just type in the names and see...I have no idea if any of these are yours, but worth a peek. I've worked on the list that came from the libraries database and narrowed it down to 15 obits. I don't need the obits, at this time. I just need help figuring out if any of the men listed are the missing relatives I've been looking for. As I have 13 obits listed, my dad does not want to pay for all of them, unless they ARE the relatives I've been looking for. There are 3 brothers. All 3 were born in Wisconsin, but moved to La Crosse by 1860. The names are John, George and Henry. Their parents Theodor and Anna Maria SMITH (Schmitt) were from Germany/ Prussia and immigrated to US in 1843. Henry was born abt 1845, George abt 1858 and Henry abt 1856. Siblings to these three were Maria(Mary), Julia, Frank, Joseph and Elizabeth Louise. Hope this info helps.
