I am trying to help my half bro find answers to the mystery of who his grandfather was. His grandfather was Ben Thorp, Bens parents are a mystery. We have found a small boy and woman with the same last name in a cemetery in Lacrosse co. and we feel there is a good chance this maybe his grandfathers mother and bro.. We would need death cert. data off these peoples death cert to find out. We are hoping more clues would come with this info. My half bro is on the other side of WI and hoping someone can help him in this area by looking up this data. Sarah E. Thorp died 10/26/1878 wife of G.R. Thorp 32 yrs old 4months 4 days Bryon Thorp died 6/1/1876 1 yr 5 months 22 days old son of G.R. and S. E. we are not sure who G.R. Thorpe is and he is not in the cemetery, from old stories seems grandfather Ben was a orphan or lived as a boy as a lodger..PLZZZ help best regards, Tam tammy54321@hotmail.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hi Shelley I passed this information to one of the Sjolander descendants and he is very interested in the photo. Family history is a hobby of his. I think he is going to email you but let me know if you don't hear from him. His name is Erik Thanks! Mary ------------------------------------------------ In a message dated 11/8/2009 2:25:26 P.M. Central Standard Time, cardiels@comcast.net writes: I've "rescued" an old photograph of Tillie SJOLANDER which was taken at the Meason Studio in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's with Tillie appearing to be in her teens at the time. In addition to her name, someone has written the following on the back of the photograph. "daughter of August SJOLANDER and his wife Karrie, born at Holmen, Wis., August SJOLANDER was the son of Peter and Oleana SJOLANDER, early settlers at Holmen, Wis." and "Oleana SJOLANDER was my Grandmother's sister, lived in Holmen for many years before moving to Onalaska, Wis.". Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding Tillie and her family as follows: Olitie SJOLANDER b. 7 Nov 1875 to parents C. A. SJOLANDER (b. 26 May 1851 in Norway) and Karen Pedersdatter QUALL (b. Jul 1851 in Norway). The couple had four children including, Olitie; Carl Beannard; Peter Albert; and Clara Aktavia SJOLANDER born between 1875 and 1880. C. A. SJOLANDER'S father was Peter E. I am the archivist for the Holmen Area Historical Society, and I believe I have the same photograph in our archives. C. A. Sjolander was a very influential businessman in Holmen. He ran a general store in Holmen for a number of years and assisted in the foundation of the Holmen Co-op Creamery. I know there are still Sjoanders in the area, who I'm sure would greatly appreciate the photograph. You mention the names Kastenschmidt, Stratman, and Niedfeldt which were also friends and neighbors of my father in Bangor, WI. You mentioned Pfaffs marrying Pfaffs but not related before the marriage. How did they know if they were or were not married? I visited eight cemetaries in the Melrose, North Bend, Ettrick, Mindoro, Bangor, Burr Oak and Sparta areas with my mother about ten years ago. The markers with our family names dominated large areas of many of those cemetaries. Those named Jung and those named Young were often from the same family. There are Pfaffs on both my father's side and mother's side of my family. I can't tell if they (the Pfaffs) are related to each other because of duplicate names in the same small area born the same year. I'm in Tennessee now but the next time I get to Wisconsin I will have my step-sister in-law(a Pfaff) try to figure ! it out. There are probably local records that are not available on the internet. Local church records on baptisms might do the trick. Burdell Rohrer burdellrohrer@comcast.net Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
