Thorp were his parents. I would say that at this point the best bet would be to find the baptism record of Ben, and his marriage record. Have you looked for a death record, or an obit for Ben? Sometimes an obit will have more info than a death record. An obit give a person time to remember more details about a person's life than a death record. Also check for a funeral record. If you can find out what funeral home/undertaker handled Ben, there might be some info there. Just in case William and Mary Thorp were some kind of relative, I think I found them living during the 1850 census in Indiana.....the parents and the son Charles seem to fit the 1860 Onalaska census.... I could not find a civil marriage record for Ben & Laura in the pre 1907 marriage index. I noticed your? family tree on ancestry.com, and see that Laura was born in Melrose, Jackson County. If Laura was still living there when she and Ben married, then a church marriage record may be in that county, mainly Melrose, or some bigger city nearby. If you can't get any help with the churches in either place, maybe the church records are at the Diocese that handles La Crosse & Jackson Counties. It looks like there is a Diocese of La Crosse. For example, church records for Outagamie, Brown, Kewaunee counties, and a few more, are located at the Diocese of Green Bay. Is it possible that Ben was a son of William and Mary J. Thorp? This family started out in Sparta, Monroe County, then on to Onalaska, La Crosse County. Is it possible that Ben's parents were too old to take care of him as a baby, so gave him up? Ben stated that his parents were born in Ohio. William and Mary J. were both born in Ohio. Benjamin was living with Frank D. and Eliza Austen in 1880. He attended school at this time. Have you considered looking for a baptism record for Benjamin? Writing to the churches in Onalaska may help. I don't know what religion Ben was, but you can check different churches there. How about school records? Maybe these records are at an archive. They may have some notes written as to what happened to Ben's parents. Have you found a marriage record for Ben & Laura? Maybe their marriage record will have his parent's names. It seems to me that he must have known something about his parents because both the 1880 & 1900 census state that his parents were born in Ohio. If you can't find a civil marriage record, then look for a church record. Hope this helps. 3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Pete PLIEMLING which was taken at the Dempsie Studio in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's or 1890's with Pete likely in his 20's or 30's at the time it was taken. In addition to his name, someone has written "Uncle Pete" on the back of the photograph. Based on limited research I was able to locate Pete and his family in census records as follows: 1880 census of LaCrosse, WI: Nicholas PLIEMLENG, age 34, a Carpenter, born France, parents born France/Luxemborg Susan PLIEMLENG, wife, age 33, Keeping House, born WA Terr, parents born Canada Peter N.
