He was born July 18th, 1827, making him over sixty-one years old when he died. The exact cause of his death is not known to the doctors. He had been sick off and on for three or four months. About three weeks before his eyes began to fail him, but he kept on preaching after this until he became unable to leave his bed. He consulted Dr. Reed of Bradford, for his eyes but received no relief. Dr. Weaver attended him during his illness dating from the time he was unable to leave the house, about Sept. 29th. On Wednesday following, a consultation was held by Drs. Weaver, Shoemaker and Wallace, but they did not agree as to what the disease was from which he was suffering. Dr. Weaver thought it was brain trouble, Dr. Shoemaker that he was in the last stages of Bright's disease. A day or so before his death, Dr. Weaver found what he believed to be a cancer in his stomach. From this we conclude that t! he disease from which he died will always remain in doubt. The funeral services were held at the Christian church where he has been pastor for the past year. The funeral, was perhaps the largest ever held in Duke Center. The church was full to overflowing and many could not be accomodated. The church was draped in mourning and floral tributes displayed which were furnished by the choir members, the E.A.U., and other friends of the deceased. The "vacant chair" was conspiruously in view. The Elder James Hart was one of our most respected citizens. He was with us but a short time, but he had endeared himself to all the people. The E.A.U., of which the elder was a member, turned out in a body to the funeral. The school children marched to the church, viewed the remains, and then marched to the cemetery, when after the coffin was lowered they deposited boquets of flowers in the grave. The funeral sermon, by request of Elder Hart before he died, was delivered by F. T. M! cEvoy, who was perhaps, as well acquinted with the elder as anyone in this vicinity. The remains were interred in the Duke Center cemetery. The family and friends were much pleased by the many tokens of respect paid to the remains of all that was mortal of Elder James Hart. - The Auger (newspaper) Oct. 13, 1888, Duke Center. Penn.
