Holden, one of the oldest and best known settlers of Mauston, died suddenly, of heart disease last Friday morning. Mr. Holden was born at Fortress Monroe, Va., April 30, 1832 and removed to Wisconsin in 1849, first settling in Columbia county, assisting in making the abstracts of that county, and also the Skinner abstracts of Jefferson county. In 1856 he resided one year at Stevens Point, since which time he has continuously resided in Juneau county. He served four years in the war, and held various local offices, among them, clerk of the court, court commissioner and justice of the peace. He has been known to be in precarious health for some years past, but his death, which was preceded by only a day's sickness, was wholly unlooked for. He leaves an invalid wife and five children, three daughters and two sons. One of the latter, Percy M. Holden, is station agent in Mauston. Source: Elroy Tribune dated 13 Dec 1888
