McDava Dies Aged 105 Wm. McDava, one of the oldest men in the world, died last Saturday evening after lingering helplessly for the past two years from the effects of a paralytic stroke. He was born on a boat on the Hudson river near Middle?eld, N.Y., May 9, 1805. He was twice married but leaves only an adopted daughter, Miss Jennie Lonie of this city, who has faithfully cared for him for many years. His parents died when he was about three years of age and he was adopted by a man ?amed Reynolds. When nine years of age he ran away from the Reynold's home after receiving a scolding. After that he managed to care for himself. He came to New Lisbon in September 1845, and built a hotel at corner of Main & Liberty streets, where the Enoch Smart dwelling now stands. Later on he sold the hotel to John Ramsey, father of Alderman J. F. Ramsey who afterwards sold it to Samuel Crosby and it was christened the Crosby House. After selling his hotel Mr. McDava built the Georgia House at corner of Bridge & Monroe streets where the Mihlbauer saloon building and dwelling now stands. This he conducted until it was destroyed by fire. Since then he has principally been engaged in keeping a private boarding house. Thirty years ago there was no better known hotel man in the state and there are thousands now living who enjoyed hospitalities of his "tavern," as he was wont to call it. Up to two years ago, when he was still able to do the marketing for his little hou! sehold he walked and acted like a man of sixty-five and whenever he accosted an old friend of seventy to eighty years of age he usually called him "bub." Mr. McDava was possessed of many good qualities. He was a democrat of the most pornounced type. Funeral services were held from his late home last Monday afternoon Rev. Trussell of the Congregational church officiating. Burial was in the family lot in the New Lisbon cemetery. Source: New Lisbon Times and Juneau County Argus dated Wed. 31 Aug 1910

Howe, was drowned in the Yellow River at Necedah, Juneau County, Wisconsin, on the morning of May the 8th. He went out from the shingle mill (in which he was employed) for a few minutes, to assist in floating some logs to the mill; the log which he was upon turned and threw him into the water; being unable to swim much, after struggling a few moments he went down in sight of his companion (a boy of fifteen or sixteen years of age) who was unable to assist him, and was not seen to rise again. A large number of men soon commenced diving, but did not succeed in recovering the body till it had been in the water nearly an hour; every means was used by his friends to resuscitate, but all proved unavailing. - The father was absent about ten miles to preach a funeral sermon, when on his return home he met a messenger who informed him that death had entered his own family circle. The deceased was 16 years and 9 months of age - an affectionate and kind hearted young man of good habits, a member and constant attendant of the Sabbath School, highly esteemed by all, and loved most by those most acquainted with him. This sudden affliction falls with crushing weight upon his parents and brother and sister; the inhabitants of our village mourn and deeply sympathize with their beloved Pastor and family, all that human sympathy could do to lessen their grief was cheerfully done by their numerous friends. Surely, while we are in life we are in the midst of deaths. W.A.A. Source: Juneau County Argus dated 14 May 1862

He was born July 18th, 1827, making him over sixty-one years old when he died. The exact cause of his death is not known to the doctors. He had been sick off and on for three or four months. About three weeks before his eyes began to fail him, but he kept on preaching after this until he became unable to leave his bed. He consulted Dr. Reed of Bradford, for his eyes but received no relief. Dr. Weaver attended him during his illness dating from the time he was unable to leave the house, about Sept. 29th. On Wednesday following, a consultation was held by Drs. Weaver, Shoemaker and Wallace, but they did not agree as to what the disease was from which he was suffering. Dr. Weaver thought it was brain trouble, Dr. Shoemaker that he was in the last stages of Bright's disease. A day or so before his death, Dr. Weaver found what he believed to be a cancer in his stomach. From this we conclude that t! he disease from which he died will always remain in doubt. The funeral services were held at the Christian church where he has been pastor for the past year. The funeral, was perhaps the largest ever held in Duke Center. The church was full to overflowing and many could not be accomodated. The church was draped in mourning and floral tributes displayed which were furnished by the choir members, the E.A.U., and other friends of the deceased. The "vacant chair" was conspiruously in view. The Elder James Hart was one of our most respected citizens. He was with us but a short time, but he had endeared himself to all the people. The E.A.U., of which the elder was a member, turned out in a body to the funeral. The school children marched to the church, viewed the remains, and then marched to the cemetery, when after the coffin was lowered they deposited boquets of flowers in the grave. The funeral sermon, by request of Elder Hart before he died, was delivered by F. T. M! cEvoy, who was perhaps, as well acquinted with the elder as anyone in this vicinity. The remains were interred in the Duke Center cemetery. The family and friends were much pleased by the many tokens of respect paid to the remains of all that was mortal of Elder James Hart. - The Auger (newspaper) Oct. 13, 1888, Duke Center. Penn. Sister McQueen came from Friendship, Adams Co., to this place about one year ago. Although her stay among us was brief, yet she had gained many friends. -- All who saw her, saw her only to love. -- She left a husband and two little children to mourn her loss; but, although they were the only relatives at the grace, they were not the only mourners. All who were acquinted with her, or who saw her in her last sickness, mourned that one so lovely should be taken from our society. Her sufferings were not great; she was sick about eight weeks. Her love to the Savior was deep and unwavering - her last words, in reply to the question, 'do you love Jesus?' was "Yes, I love." Do you feel that Jesus loves you? "Yes, he loves," and she sweetly closed her eyes in death, as the Morning Glory closes its petals with the closing day. Her funeral was attended on the 8th, by the writer. A. B.
