Surnames: Curtis, Boucher, DuVivier, Marshall, Brewster, Jeffrey, Clark, Skinner Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wEC.2ACE/1112.1.1 Message Board Post: Dear K.C. -- I would be happy to share the information that I have on the Curtis family. I can tell you quite a lot about them; here's a start: Joseph Curtis (chr. 1781-1863) married Hannah Boucher (born abt 1784) in Newton-on-Ouse, Yorkshire, England, on 14 March 1803. Their children were: Samuel (1804-1827), Isabella (1807-1860), Matthew (1810-1895), Mary (1813-1890), Hannah (born abt 1813), Joseph (1818-1897), Robert (1821-1910), Elenor ("Helen") (b.1823) and Eliza (chr. 1826). Following the death of his wife in 1826 and his oldest son in 1827, Joseph fell on hard times. In 1831 he left for America with his six youngest children. His daughter Isabella was married to John Eastwood DuVivier and remained in England. Joseph's son Matthew was married to Frances DuVivier and also remained in England. However, Matthew and his children did finally come to America in 1849. Mary Curtis married John Marshall; Hannah Curtis married a cousin named Matthew Curtis; Joseph Curtis married Roxana Brewster; Robert Curtis married Harriet Jeffrey; Helen Curtis married Franklin Clark; Eliza Curtis married Laban Skinner. The Curtis family settled near Chicago, in the Des Plaines area. Later some branches of the Curtis family moved to New Lisbon, Wisconsin. Joseph Curtis, the original immigrant, did not remain in America. He returned to Linton-on-Ouse and lived with his daughter Isabella and her family. Joseph Curtis was born in a village called Marton-cum-Grafton, a few miles from Linton-on-Ouse. His family had lived in the villages of Marton and Grafton for generations. There is still one person by the name of Curtis living in Grafton today. I have more details to share with you if you are interested. I descend from Joseph's son Matthew Linton Curtis. I assume you descend from Matthew's sister Helen? I would certainly appreciate any details you can provide about the various branches of the Curtis family. Carol peak123@earthlink.net

Surnames: Beard, Telfer Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wEC.2ACE/1398 Message Board Post: Ellen J. Beard, daughter of A. Telfer and wife of J. P. Beard, died at her home in this city on the 8th inst. aged 34 yrs. one month and eight days. She had lived in this vicinity nearly all her life, had a very large circle of friends and was beloved by all who knew her. She embraced the religion of the Bible about 15 years ago, joined the church of the United Brethren in Christ, in which she lived a faithful member and consistent christian until death. Her countenance usually had a cheerful expression scattering sunshine throughout the circle in which she moved. Her funeral was one of the largest, if not the largest, ever held in this city. The old, the middle-aged and the children were there, and little distinction was made in nationality. The service was conducte by Rev. D. C. Talbot, and the very appropriate words, "I go to prepare a place for you," was used for his text. He made it a point to show to the grief stricken parents, as well as the husband, and children, and friends, God knows how to fit up a palace, a mansion or a garden, and how to bestud the walls with precous gems or what kinds flowers to pluck from his garden of earth for his Eden above. She leaves two children, a girl of 12 years and a boy about seven, with husband, parents and a large circle of friends to mourn their loss, which we trust is her eternal gain.
