Almon was born in Canada in 1823. He was the oldest of five children. His mother's name was Mary. He married Sinah Roberts in Ohio. After moving to Merrillan, Wisconsin, with their one year old son, Egdar, Almon left his family for a period of about 8 years. He went to Calfornia in search of gold. After his return to his family in Merrillan, he enlisted as a private in Company C. 37th Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry to serve during the war. This was on March 30, 1864. He participated in several battles and was severly wounded in the left side. He recovered at the hospital at City Point, Virginia and Willets Point, Virginia and then received an honorable discharge at the close of the war. He was coverted 18 years before his death at a camp meeting held by Rev. Foster in Alma Center. From that time until about two years before his death, when his health failed, he served as a local preacher in the M. E. church preaching at several points in the vicinity of Merrillan and Columbia, establishing several Sunday schools. Almon also served as county sheriff for several years. Sinah was also born in Canada on February 12, 1830. She died on December 4, 1905, and is buried next to Almond in Merrillan, Wisconsin. Sinah's mother's name was Mary. Maiden name not known. Her father's name was Thomas Roberts. Both Almond's and Sinah's families lived in Iroquois, Dundas County, Canada. Any information on these families would be very helpful and appreciated. Thank you.
