    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Long, Heather, Hale, Thorpe, Porter Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/oEC.2ACE/597 Message Board Post: Greetings from Portland, Oregon, I'm a Long, as well as a Heather and Hale, descended from Alexander Long, Adam Long, Frank Alexander Long to my grandmother Helen Long. They were Scots (Scotch) Irish, also known as Ulster Scots, who migrated to IRE as Protestants from ENG>NOR>VIK?. Alexander brought Adam to the United States as a child from London, England, UK, where he was born in the 1830's. I don't know Alexander's wife's name or what happened to her. Alexander himself was from Limerick, Ireland. The Longs are believed to have first settled in Twinsburg, Summit Co., OH though they might have stopped along the way. There were (or are) also other Longs and Heathers there to include another Adam Long and Katherine Long buried in the Twinsburg cemetery ca.1850. Adam m. Elizabeth Heather, d. of Jarvis Heather and Sally Hale of NY and NH there in 1853. Adam and Elizabeth had four children: my Great Grandpa Frank Alexander, b. 1858; Sarah Helen Long, b. 1854; Hoodley (Hoadley) Alling, b. 1856, and believed to have died young; and Norah Elizabeth, b 1865, and died 1923 in Marshfield, Wood Co., WI. At some point the lot of them ended up in Wisconsin and my Grandma Helen was b.1892 in Black River Falls, Green Co.. Her siblings were William Long, b. 1891 and maybe a Frank Jr.; I believe neither lived to adulthood. Frank was m. to Charlotte (Lottie) Marcella Porter, d. of William Berkeley Porter and Harriet Thorpe. William owned a drug store owner in Black River Falls. Frank clerked in a store and had many Winnebago Indian friends there before members of the tribe were transported west. In about 1897 Frank and family headed to Arizona to an ill-fated mining operation that they were involved in for about ten years. They then moved to Pasadena, California where the family remained.
