You may not be aware of the fact that your immigrant ancestors' naturalization records can be obtained free from the UW-Oshkosh Area Research Center. These records are for the following counties only: Dodge, Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Marquette and Winnebago. Go to the following website: http://www.uwosh.edu/archives/natural.htm and after reading that page, click on Services on the top link bar. We are very lucky to have this resource available to us, as most of America is not as lucky. There is no centralized list of all these type of resources. If you're looking for immigrant records for Michigan, you can phone to request the records at: 517-373-1408. The majority of nat. records pre-1922 will be under the name of the immigrant father in the family. Women and children received their naturalization through him. Even immigrant widows usually did not seek naturalization. The most informative papers are the first 2 steps: Declaration of Intention, and Petition. Those documents may (if you're lucky) list the wife and every child, including date and place of birth. The final paper, Naturalization, is not very informative. If a woman (even US-born) married a non-citizen immigrant she lost her US Citizen status, and it was only restored through his naturalization. Therefore, if your ancestress had more than one marriage make sure to check the papers for all immigrant husbands. Happy hunting! Deb

Does anyone know where this is? The article goes onto say that the person who drown in the river lived east of A. Schupinski's place in the Second Ward. Why would the Journal reference where somebody lived relative to A. Schupinski? I think the "A" stands for August Schupinski. Is A. Schupinski famous? Does anyone know what he did or why the paper would do this?

You need NATF form 85, available for free via email request at: http://www.nara.gov/research/ordering/ordrfrms.html#form%2085 They will send either a minimal number of pages or the whole packet depending on what you request. I originally requested the minimal packet on my WI ancestor Silas Payne, and then requested the rest of the packet. What I found in the rest of it was of great value. Silas spent decades trying to prove his disability claim, and the court records included transcripts of his testimony, in which he described how he was orphaned, where he was born, who were the neighbors of his parents, the surname of the family that brought him to Wisconsin, and how he spent his years up to, during and after his service. I hope you have the same luck.

Perhaps this will confuse you on an even higher level. From Prussian Netzelanders, under the section: Immigrants from the Grand Duchies of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz, in north central Germany: FLEGEL, Wilhelm- b. "Mecklenburg Germany", marr. Luise Marquardt at Manchester 11 a.m.-1 January 1881/ No. 52962. (Green Lake Co. marriage record) The date fits your census data. Remember that 1st names of women were often made into nicknames or variants that make little sense to us today. I am searching for anyone who knows something about a Bill Flagel in Town of Manchester, Green Lake County in the late 1800s early 1900s. I do not understand this name. I found him listed in the 1880 census with Fredreich Mueller and the relationship was "son." I didn't use to document my sources as well as I do now and am now very sorry about it. At any rate, I think I remember my Grandmother telling me that he was a "sort of" stepson. He may have come from Germany with the family, I don't know. The census shows him born in Mecklenburg which is also where Frederich Mueller came from. I have him married to Elizabeth E. ____. And my original notes from Grandma said she thought he married a Weisel. Another researcher, a descendant of Conrad Weisel, who has done a great deal of research on the Weisel family in Green Lake County. She thinks my marriage info is an error. My source was the 1910 census where I found a "Flagel, William J., Head, M, W, 59 years, Married 29 years; Born Germany; Parents Born Germany; Immigrated 1856 PA; Mason, Stone Work, with Elizabeth E., Wife, F, W, 49 years, Married 29 years; 7 Children - 6 Living; Born Wisconsin; Parents born Germany." Seemed like he was the same as the person I had previously listed as Bill Flagel. I have, however, seen other genealogists have him married to Mary Weisel, but do not know their sources yet. What more do any of you know about this? I sure would like to get it straightened out. Help! Help! Help!
Hello List, I am new to this list, but am searching for information about ancestors of mine. An Abner Bradbury, born 20/12/1787 in Athens Maine, married Eunice Hall 3/5/1814 in Belfast, Maine, had 9 children all born in Athens Maine. Then before 1850 moved to Green Lake County, WI. His 5th child, my ancestor, was Benjamin Franklin Bradbury, born 3/11/1824. He married a Clarissa Calfurina Bowers in 1853 in Green lake County. Their first child, Ada Jane, was born in Markessan, Green County 11/3/1853. Ada married Nelson Schuyler West from Grafton, NY in Rice Lake in 1873. Nelson West had been previously married Orra Louisa Bowers in 1865, a sister to Clarissa Calfurina Bowers, wife of B. F. Bradbury. Orra apparently died after which Mr. West married Ada Bradbury, niece of his first wife. Almost immediately after the marriage of Ada Bradbury to Nelson West the family of B. F. Bradbury, including Nelson West and Ada, moved by wagon to Beaver Creek area of Nebraska where they lived first in sod houses. Over time the town of Lebanon was built there and both Mr. Bradbury and Mr. West played a large role in establishing the town. However, Mrs. Clarissa Bradbury became ill and died in Lebanon in 1901. By that time Ada had separated from her husband and had moved with her three younger daughters into the home of her father., Mr. B. F. Bradbury. After the death of his wife, Mr. Bradbury moved back to Rice Lake, WI. where he died in 1906. Ada subsequently sold the place in Wisconsin and about 1910 moved with her children to Tennessee . My questions are: Can we establish just when Abner Bradbury moved to Wisconsin taking along his son Benjamin Franklin? Can we learn anything about the parents of the Bowers girls who married Benjamin F. Bradbury and Nelson S. West? Can we learn when Mr. West came to Wisconsin? Is there any information bout the return of Mr. Bradbury to Rice Lake? It would appear there was some connection to Rice Lake before the move to Nebraska since the marriage of Nelson West to Ada Bradbury was in that place. As you can see, I am trying to put together a story so any information about West, Bradbury, or Bowers would be of value to me. The only locations I am familiar with are mentioned. If either of you have anything to contribute in response it would be most welcome. I would be happy to share information if it would be wanted. Thank you, Forrest L. Fuller (docfuller@juno.com)
