Make Your Vote Count As a researcher, I am always on the look out for new Web sites, books, or other media that is designed to educate fellow researchers and myself. My children say I am a frustrated teacher, I say I am an "unsatisfied student." I enjoy genealogy because I am always learning. Last year I brought to your attention a new company, The Studio, that was beginning to produce video tapes on genealogy subjects, many of them on the computer uses currently available to researchers. To date they have produced more than twenty genealogy and family history videos in the last thirteen months, many of them by national experts. For more on these videos, be sure to check out their web site (www.123genealogy.com). Inside sources tell me that additional videos will be released in the next few months. Some of the videos recently released have included some non-technical subjects, looking at more traditional aspects of genealogical research. As you know the National Genealogical Society just concluded the NGS 2001 Conference in the States, held in Portland, Oregon. I know that I enjoyed the conference, though I spent most of the time working. However, during this recent conference, crews from The Studio conducted interviews with experts in attendance and documented some of the conference, including the vendor area, where there were some great new products. The Studio, Inc., a creative media production facility, and producer Stephen Lemmon intend to develop a television series dealing with the subject of Family History. In my conversations with The Studio, and my dealings with them and the producer in working on the video tapes I did for them lately, I know that when they set their mind to doing something, it gets done. In fact, I was asked to host a segment for the pilot of this series. We recorded the segments while at the conference. In fact, as we were recording those segments, there were many intrigued by the goings on as we had microphones, cameras, and different locations while filming. Right now The Studio is looking for input from genealogists. They have posted a short survey on their new Web site. This survey is intended to gather information about whether or not people are interested in having a series devoted to family history. Let me assure you that they are not collecting any personal data or e-mail addresses in some sort of a marketing ploy. The survey asks six questions, dealing with your interest in such a series, what you would like to see in such a series, and finally how you access television programs (so they know how many have cable or satellite access).
