Smith was born in Orleans Co., Vt., Jan. 7, 1807. When a young man, he learned the blacksmith trade in his native State. When twenty-two years of age, he located in Madison Co., N.Y., opened a shop and worked at his trade. He remained there until 1836, then removed to Pennsylvania, and settled in the city of Erie, where he followed his trade for eleven years. In 1847, he removed to the Territory of Wisconsin, and located in Beloit, where he was joined by his family one year later. He was one of the first blacksmiths in that town. He remained there, working at his trade, until 1850, when he came to Green county, and located in Clarence, remaining there until 1854, then removed to Albany and opened a shop. His health becoming bad, he had to stop work. In a few years, he removed to Kansas. His home is now in Springfield, Dak. He was married in 1830, to Alzina Wentworth, a native of Vermont. This union was blessed with nine children, eight of whom are now living. ------- Daniel and Alzina Wentworth Smith had the following children: Adelia b 1831, m V.R. VanCuren; James b 1833, m Mary J. Hess; Seager b 1835, m Emily Wright; Susan b 1837, m John Shaw Knowles; Alba b 1839; Chester b 1841, m Carrie Emma Cowing; Joseph b 1843, m Alice Wilson; Mary b 1846, m Joshua Jewell; Emily b 1849, m Nathan Hathaway. Daniel died in Springfield, Bon Homme County, SD on 15 May 1888; he is buried in Springfield Cemetery. All five of Daniel & Alzina's sons served in the Civil War from Wisconsin.
