He lived near Monroe until 1847, then located in this town (Washington) on section 22. He has since died. Two of his sons now reside on section 22. James Crouch was born in VA, 13 June 1801. He moved to OH when a young man, and settled in Ross county, where he was married the Nancy Thomas, also a native of VA. They remained in OH twelve years, then removed to Lafayette, IN, where he engaged in running a ferry boat across the Wabash river, which he continued two years. He then moved to Warren county and bought land near Independence, where he improved a farm and remained until 1844. In that year he started, in company with three other families, for the Territory of Wisconsin. They traveled with teams, bringing their household goods with them and camped along the way. He first settled three miles south of Monroe, where he bought eighty acres of land, and lived three years. He then traded for land on section 22 , of the town of Washington, to which he removed in the fall of 1847. He built a log house which was his home for several years, when he built a frame house, in which he lived until the time of his death, 10 Mary 1873. Mrs Crouch died 10 Apr 1881. Five children were born to them, four of whom are now living-William R, Martha, now the wife of James Waite, of IA; Samuel T and Elizabeth, wife of John Gange, living in Dakota. It was mainly due to Mr Crouch's efforts that the M E Church was established in the town of Washington. He also took an interest in the cause of education, and was influential in establishing a good school in the town.

Right after James and Sarah were married Samuel and Catherine, and all their children, including James and Sarah, moved to Grant City, Worth CO. Missouri. Can anyone tell me ANYTHING on these people? Wow, a strike! Re. vol 1, issue 2: Peggy, the bells are pealing loudly. What a treat--I submitted my message in issue 1 in hopes of helping out Gerry & Dodie re the Crosgroves and as a result, it looks like I may have serendipitously discovered a new relative! I'll email you separately to explore our common ancestors. Thanks for responding. Hal Mosher
Can anyone tell me what churches were near Monroe, Green County, in 1850s and 1860s? I am looking for some church records of births/baptisms/burials. The family, Knoll (aka Noll) were from Union County, PA, where their line attended the Reformed Church (now United Church of Christ). Also, does anyone know of any cemeteries where Knolls or Diffenderfers in Monroe might have been buried around 1862? Thanks in advance for any help. Laura A. in NC
Hi All, OK, you have my full attention here. I have found a relationship to exist in my family to a John McClarrinon and his step-daughter married Peter Flood - all from the Brooklyn-Dayton area. If this turns out to be the same John McClarrinon - he had 3 wives then as he was married previous before marrying my ancestor - Permelia Spaulding Root (she is from the famous Spaulding family of CT). Permelia and Francis Root came to Wisconsin from NY abt 1847 and bought land in Brooklyn (Sandy Hook Rd) and built their "mansion" home. Within the next year Francis has died at a young age. I do not know his birthdate as of yet - but if it was anything close to Permelia's - he died before the age of 30. Francis & Permelia had 2 children - James and Harriet Root. Harriet married Peter Flood. I visited the homestead many many years ago when I first started researching my family. At that time there were 2 homes on the lot. One of the houses, if not both, has now been torn down and the lot is now used for a commercial Pork producing operation. Permelia married John McClarrinon and had 7 children together with the first one being born abt 1856. John had one son, George, who was born abt 1842 in NY. I do not have a marriage date for John/Permelia though. Permelia died in 1870 and is buried in the Dayton Cemetery. John died in 1900 and is also buried there. I haven't done any research on the Flood family at all to know if the other relationship works or not. But it would sound as if this could be the same John since widow Mary (prob 3rd wife) is shown only on the 1900 census. John died May 16, 1900. Any bells ringing here??? Thanks! We are trying to find Roman Catholic Church records for our family who lived in Green and Rock Counties of Wisconsin from about 1858-1870. We don't know the name of the parishes but during this time they lived in Attica (Brooklyn) and Albany of Green County and Janesville of Rock County. The family is Samuel L and Margaret Crossgrove (Crosgrove and Cosgrove) and their daughters Lillian and Mary Ann. Any advise on who we should contact would be greatly appreciated. TIA/Gerry & Dodie

John, Sr. & Jane (Woolsey) Magee immigrated to Ontario about 1822. Some, if not all, of their 8 children ended up in Green County 1845/1850. John, Jr. (my g.grandfather) lived in Exeter Twp., widowed with 6 children on 1850 census. Daughter Eliza Jane m. Robert Marshall 1861, had dau. Eliza, son Henry (what happened to Eliza & Henry?). Eliza Jane d. 1869 & Robert m. her sister, Matilda in 1869. Robert d. 1871. Two children of John, Jr. moved to MN but the other two, Margaret & John, Jr.#2, I cannot account for. George, also son of John, Sr. & Jane, is mentioned in "History of Green County" (1884); his children were: Jennie m. to F. Sherger, Evansville, Mary m. to A.S.Lewis, Julia m. to A.W.Patterson of Howard Co., NE, Hattie widow of John T.O.Swager, Evansville, Emma m. to O. Case., Wm. on homestead, Lillie m. to Walter Hopkins & George, Jr. m. to Effie Marshall. I do know of Wm.'s descendants. Do any descendants of the other children know where in Ireland the Magees came from? They also had a son, James but not sure if this is the right one. Appears on 1860 census without a wife but with son, William, age 15. Son Woolsey went west with the Gold Rush about 1850. Son William - can't account for. Daughters Alice, Jane, and Mary. Jane could possibly be the one m. to John Deyell in 1847 in Green Co. Does any of this info fit into anybody else's searches???? Sincerely appreciate your help.

Hello, I am researching the family of James Crouch, who was a farmer in Green County last century. I understand that there is a reference to a James Crouch in "The History of Green County, WI 1884" on page 1128. If anyone has access to this book and would not mind doing a look-up for me, I'd be grateful! Thank You!
