    3. Posted on: Green Co. Wi Obituaries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Wi/GreenObits/10578 Surname: Reed, Rogers ------------------------- Albany, Green County Wisconsin Vindicator, Thursday, March 22, 1894 Mrs. Jessie Ellizabeth Reed Rogers was born here in Green County Oct. 28, 1858 and died in Albany March 15, 1894. She received a good and common school education, which was supplemented by several terms' work in school at Washington, D.C. when she was 18 years of age. She was a good student and mastered thoroughly whatever she undertook. After leaving school she taught for several terms with great success. She was married to Harvey A. Rogers June 28, 1879. At the age of 14 she united with the M.E. Church and has been closely associated with its work ever since. Mrs. Rogers was a woman of strong individuality, a clear thinker and earnest worker. Her personality was always felt, and by her clearness of perception of the thing that needed to be done at the right time, many of the rugged places in life's pathways were made smooth. The lines of an itinerant minister do not always fall in pleasant places and this is especially true of the wife, who frequently has to bear burdens the world knows nothing of. Yet the cheerfulness and bravery with which she carried out her part of the work God called them to do, was a source of inspiration to all who came into contact with her. She was ambitious, possessed high ideals, and one whose excellent character claimed and received the respect of all. From over the state come words of grief and heartfelt sympathy for the sorrowing husband in this, his hour of distress and tears. The husband, family and church have suffered a great loss and heaven has gained a noble soul. She met death with the fortitude of one whose trust is in the living God, knowing that "He doeth all things well". Her funeral was held from the M.E. Church at the usual hour of the morning service, and was conducted by the presiding Elder, Rev. W.J. McKay, assisted by the Rev. Joseph Mountain, pastor of the Baptist Church in this place. The attending clergymen from abroad were Rev. Woodruff and wife of Brodhead, Wis., Rev. Woolley and wife of Hammond, Wis., and Rev. Ira Le Baron, of Monticello. It was one of the largest and most impressive ever held in Albany. The I.O.O.F. lodge attended in a body, as did the W.C.T.U., of which she was a prominent member. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful: "God's workers are removed but His work goes on". "Darkness and sorrow may for a time obscure His face, yet the providences of God are rich in blessings for those who put their trust in Him". She leaves a husband and one son three and a half years old, to keep sacred the memory of the wife and mother. H.B. Waite

    3. Posted on: Green Co. Wi Obituaries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Wi/GreenObits/10577 Surname: Smith, Pomeroy, Fenton ------------------------- Albany, Green County Wisconsin Vindicator, November, 1890 Mrs. W.A. Smith, an old resident of Albany, passed quietly away at 1:00 Wednesday morning, Nov. 5, 1890. The funeral was held Thursday afternoon and was largely attended. Mrs. Emily Pomeroy Smith was born at New Canaan, Columbia Co., NY April 27, 1814, and at death was aged 76 years, and 8 months. From early childhood she has been a professing and devout Christian, a close Bible student; and had gained a considerable knowledge of the scriptures. Always kind and hospitable, a devoted wife and loving, tender mother, she won friends on every side. With a bright smile to greet even her enemies, she showed forth the love and devotion which Christ stamps upon all who know Him and follow Him. Her father, for about 70 years, was a Methodist minister in one of the eastern conferences. She was married at Verona, Oneida Co., NY and came to Wisconsin in 1854 and settled at Exeter, Green Co., where they lived many years, finally locating in our beautiful little village of Albany. A husband and four children survive her, all of whom she has carefully tended and watched with motherly pride as they developed into man and womanhood and prospered in the commerce of the world or carved themselves a fortune from the storehouse of almighty God. Eugene Smith, the eldest son, is a prosperous manufacturer and jobber of Chicago, and is married with two children. Arthur Smith we all know as a businessman of Albany. He formerly owned and conducted the meat market business here. He also is married, with two children to bless and make home happy. Mrs. Emily Elizabeth Smith Fenton is the only daughter, and wife of one of Green County's most prosperous farmers, and blessed with three children. Their farm is near Attica. Pomeroy Smith, the youngest, of Chicago, is a man of business, connected with the S. A. Maxwell & Co., stationery dealers. He is married and has one child. He holds a very responsible position with the firm. A family to be proud of. Glorious has been her life, peaceful her death, death to the body, resurrection of the soul. She lived to see all her children beyond the period of young manhood and womanhood and until they were parents, and was the first of her generation to pass into the great unknown, where sorrow and sighing ceases and songs of joy begin: Long has she fought life's battles; Long 'neath its cares she stood; Until at last the summons came; That loosened her from pain.

Newbury and in 1849 came to Green County locating on Section 22, town of Albany, where he lived until May 3, 1894, when he purchased a home in the village, where he has since resided. Mr. and Mrs. Flint have been the parents of 4 children, 3 of whom -- Aaron B., Esther S. and Frank S., -- survive him together with their mother who for over 47 years lived with him in the holy state of matrimony. About 18 years ago, in a series of meetings held in the Peebles School house by the Rev. Robert Smith, he experienced religion and although he has never united with any church has since lived a consistent Christian life. Besides his immediate family he leaves a large circle of relatives and friends who mourn his loss. Everybody who knew him was his friend and he was a friend to everybody. His last illness was very brief, only two weeks, and he did not take to his bed until the morning of the day he died. He retained the full use of his faculties to the last and suffered no pain. He was a good husband, a good father, a good neighbor and a good friend. A good man has gone home to God. J.M.

    3. Posted on: Green Co. Wi Obituaries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Wi/GreenObits/10575 Surname: Carle, Roberts, Alverson, Tripp, Talmage ------------------------- Albany, Green County Wisconsin Vindicator, Thursday July 2, 1896 Died At his late residence in the village of Albany, Friday evening, June 26, 1896, J.F. Carle, aged 73 years, 11 months and 16 days. J.F. Carle was born in Waterboro Center Main, July 10, 1822. He was married to Miss Mary P.Roberts, a native of the same state, on January 16, 1844. They lived in Maine until 1855, where six children, two sons and four daughters, were born to them. In December, 1855, he with his family came west in order, as he thought, to give his children a better chance. He settled near Janesville where he had two brothers living, John B. and James. He made farming his occupation and toiled early and late to build up a home for his loved ones; but those were hard times and a new country. God blessed his labors and they prospered. In January, 1862 he moved to the town of Brooklyn, where he had bought a small farm. Death entered the home on September 27, 1871 and the younger son George was laid to rest. In 1872 with his wife and youngest child, Ella, he moved to Juda, and had a pleasant home. He served as Justice of the Peace for ten years. He was in the butcher business for a while, always keeping himself busy. The youngest child was married in 1877, leaving the old folk alone. Being a great lover of his children, and three of them living in Albany, he sold his beautiful home in Juda and bought property here in Albany, moving in 1888, where he has been contented and happy with his children, his church work and fishing. At 14 years of age he gave his heart to God, united with the church and has been a devout lover of church and temperance work all his life. He joined the Sons of Temperance in early manhood, and afterwards the Good Templars; was an earnest Prohibitionist from the start of that movement, ready to do what he could. The son, J.F. Carle, he lived with at the time of his decease. Susan Alverson, the oldest daugher, resides nearby. Addie C. Tripp lives in Covina, California; Susan Talmage, the second daughter, passed away two years ago. ella, the youngest, lives near Hansel, Iowa. Three daughters, on e son and the aged wife are left to mourn their loss. A large number of people attended the funeral Monday afternoon at the Baptist Church. Rev. Mountain preached from 2nd Timothy, 4th Chapter, 6th, 7th and 8th verses. Messrs. Levi and Wilber Carle, nephews of the deceased, were up from Janesville and many old friends from Juda were present. Mr. Carle was a man of more than ordinary intelligence, and was especially a great student of the Bible. In his death the church has lost one of the faithful ones, who was always at his post in the church service, the young people's meetings, the prayer and covenant meetings and the Sunday school. He was wise in cousel and always ready to take hold of the work nearest his hand. The work shall move on but we will miss our Brother Carle. In the community, he was just the sort of man the world needed. His interest in the cause of temperance was very great. His family has lost a true husband and father, always thoughtful for their welfare, and solicitous for their good. For 60 years he has walked wiwth God when his Father called him home. The family feels sensibly the kindness and consideration of friends and neighbors and gratefully express to all their gratitude for the sympathy and kindness shown them, and the beautiful flowers brought.

Few words need to be said in eulogy of such a character. Beloved by all who knew her, her cheerfulness, kindness and gentleness will live in their memory. It requires great faith to say "Thy will be done" when such a life goes out in the very morning of usefulnes with such a promise for the future. In the hour of their great sorrow, when the soul is bowed down with grief such as only death can bring, the stricken ones, however, can but still remember the many acts of kindness of their friends, both in Janesville and at Wichita, Kansas, where Miss Warren spent many days prior to her removal to Janesville. The funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Arthur B. Barrington, were held at the home Tuesday afternoon and the remains laid to rest in the Oak Hill Cemetery. The floral offerings were unusually handsome and spoke silent words of sympathy and affection. Miss Warren was born in Albany, where she spent the early days of her life and where she has many friends who deeply mourn her death.

Roberts in this village on Sunday June 8, 1894, Jonathan H. Roberts, aged 89 years, 6 months and 28 days. Jonathan H. Roberts was born in the state of Maine on Nov. 5 1804. He moved to Ohio in 1834 and to Wisconsin in 1844. He was converted and joined the Freewill Baptist Church when he was 18. Some years later he joined the United Brethren Church of which he has remained a faithful and devotoed member until death. He was for many years an ordained preacher and filled that holy office with acceptability. He was married to Maria Davis in 1830, there were born to them 3 sons, 2 of whom are still living. Father Roberts buried his wife 24 years ago and since that time he has walked life's pathway alone. For 20 years he has lived with his son, Dr. G.W. Roberts, where he has had a comfortable home. All that willing hands and loving hearts could do was done to make Father Roberts' days bright and happy. It can truthfully be told that Grandpa had no enemies; everybody loved him. Christ never had a truer, more devoted disciple--always at church when able to go and of late years would be at prayer meeting when failing strength made it difficult indeed. The M.E. Church at Albany (although Grandpa was not a member) sustains a severe loss in his removal. Where is there another such good man--a good theologian, a ready talker, a wise counselor, a mature Christian. He was at church 2 weeks before he died and in the morning class meeting said "I feel the end is very near". Indeed it was, it was his last testimony. On Sunday, June 3 he closed his eyes on earth to enter upon the glories of Heaven. He lived beyond his appointed time to see his 90th year. Of this man it may be said: "He being dead yet speaketh". His mortal remains were laid to rest near Janesville and suitable funeral services will be held hereafter. H.A. Rogers
