Mr. Lore was running a laundry and lived in the second story of the building. An adjoining store caught fire about 3:00 in the morning, the flames soon reaching the building occupied by the Lore family. Mr. Lore went down a rear stairway with their older child, a little girl 4 or 5 years old, and supposed his wife would follow with the baby. Instead of doing so Mrs. Lore attempted to escape by the front stairway, with the result that both she and the baby were fatally burned, the child dying Tuesday. Mrs. Lore's remains were brought to Albany Tuesday and the funeral held from the M.E. Church. Those of the infant were brought here today. Every effort was made to save both mother and child, the latter suffering amputation of one arm and ear in the vain endeavor. The circumstance is very sad and tragic one, and deep sympathy is expressed by all for the sorely afflicted relatives. Mrs. Lore was well known and beloved in Albany and the vicinity in which she lived. She was an only daughter and was about 27 years of age.
Posted on: Green Co. Wi Obituaries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Wi/GreenObits/10611 Surname: Bartlett, Payne, Stewart ------------------------- Albany, Green County Wisconsin Vindicator, Thursday, July 5, 1894. One by one the loved ones are coming to the close of life's journey, and the captive spirits set free. John E. Bartlett, son of Mrs. and Mrs. J.C. Bartlett, was born at Corinth, NY Aug. 9, 1847. In 1855 he came with his parents and settled at Beloit and a year later came to Albany, this county, to learn the printing business in the office of the Albany Times, Lacy and Dexter, proprietors. He remained in the office until the beating drum and booming cannon gave evidence that our country was in the midst of war when he left his duties at home, donned the uniform and stood ready at the nation's call. He was a member of Co. F 31st Wisc. Volunteers, organized by Capt. C.W. Burns. After 3 years of faithful service in the army, Mr. Bartlett returned to Albany, broken down in health by the hardshihps of army life. In company with C.W. Osgood, a former associate in the printing business, he revived the patriotic press and type which had so long been silent, and under the name of the Albany Journal, started a new newspaper enterprise. On account of failing health, Mr. Bartlett was obliged to suspend publication at the end of 6 months. In 1878 upon the earnest solicitation of friends, he resumed publication of the paper. On the evening of Nov. 26, 1883, together with a large part of the business portion of Albany, the Journal office was destroyed by a fire. With heroic courage he soon had another outfit in place and the Journal, which was ever a credit to its publisher, and an honor to the little village, was making its regular visits to its readers. Mr. Bartlett was united in marriage with Miss Emma B. Payne, a native of New York State, Dec. 25, 1866. Two children were born to them, Flora, Stella, who died in infancy and Spencer E., who survives to comfort the bereaved wife and mother. About 3 years ago he was attacked by serious brain trouble and it was thought best to take him to Mendota that he might have the best medical treatment. Last fall he fell from a three story window, which resulted in a broken arm. The bone did not seem to heal and about three weeks ago he suffered amputation. Gangrene set in and caused his death which occurred last Tuesday June 26, 1894 aged 47 years. Besides the bereaved wife and son, Mr. Bartlett leaves a father and mother, Mrs. and Mrs. L.C. Bartlett of this city, one sister, Mrs. Kate Stewart, and five brothers: Charles, Emmett, Eugene, and William of this city and George Bartlett of Albany; he being the first of the family circle to be removed by death. The remains were brought to this city Wednesday morning and taken to the home of his father where the funeral services were conducted by the Rev. W. Woodruff, the comforting son service being rendered by the Brodhead Lady Quartette. The remains were laid to rest in Greenwood. The bereaved family have the sympathy of many friends in their sorrow. --Busy Citizen, Brodhead

Wi Obituaries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Wi/GreenObits/10610 Surname: Talmage, Carle ------------------------- Albany, Green County, Wisconsin Vindicator, Thursday, Sept. 14, 1893 One more home visited by the death angel. Our mother, our sister, our daughter, and kind wife has gone to be with Jesus. Sarah Jane Carle Talmage was the daughter of B.F. and Mary P. Carle of this village. She was born in York Co., Maine, April 17, 1846. She was married to John F. Talmage Sept. 24, 1865; was the mother of eight children, four of whom are still living. There is one brother, four sisters, her husband, children, mother and father left to mourn their loss. She was a true daughter, a faithful wife, a loving and careful mother, a consistent Christian in all the walks of life. Her choice of accepting Christ at the age of 17 made life more bright and happy. She departed this life Sept. 5, 1893, after a severe illness, during which time she was perfectly resigned and conscious until the last moment. None but those by her bedside can fully understand what a halo of light and joy, when suffering such intense pain, the presence of Jesus was to her, and it made her resigned to the will of God. Sarah has always done what she could to make loved ones and friends happy; always ready to lend a helping hand whenever possible; and as the body lies in the casket, the cradle of heaven, the soul has gone to be with loved ones in heaven. Posted on: Green Co. Wi Obituaries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Wi/GreenObits/10609 Surname: Zentner, Stephenson ------------------------- Albany, Green County Wisconsin Vindicator, Thursday, September 28, 1893 Master Fred Zentner, son of Issiah and Mary Zentner, died at the home of his parents on Jordan Prairie, Sept. 20, 1893, aged 14 years, 3 months and 9 days. When three or four years of age, he went to live with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Stephenson, near the Gap Church, and remained with them most of the time until his last illness. The deceased was ill but a few days and his sudden death was a hard blow to his parents, and brothers, but especially to the grandparents. It was pathetic to hear these aged people speak of their lonliness. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. C.W. Robinson, the sermon being preached in the Gap Church Thursday Sept. 21 to a large audience of neighbors and friends. The text was from Ex. 1:6 "And Joseph died and all his brethren and all that generation". It was shown that the history of all must close with a similar sentence. That the time of death is unknown and while the old must die, the young may died and that this second should influence us to "work the work of him that sent me while it is day" as "the night cometh when no man can work". The remains were interred in the Gap Church cemetery. We extend our sympathies to the bereaved friends.

Pleasant, Green Co., Wisconsin, Feb. 12, 1856, where he remained until the age of 18 yars, obtaining a limited education at the little red schoolhouse north of Monticello. He was then employed by Thomas Evans to work on his farm, where he remained for four years. He then entered the employ of J. P. Cunningham as a clerk in his store, at Dayton, Wisc., where he remained for six years, at which time he was engaged as a manager of the Mercantile Association, whose business he successfully managed three years. On the 1st day of Jan. 1891 he became a member of the firm of Benkert and O'Donnell of Albany. The following spring he was united in marriage with Miss Grace, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O.F. Wallihan of Brooklyn. His business in Albany was a large and successful one. His home was a happy one, his prospects bright, but about a year ago he was attacked by an insidious disease which baffled the skill of the best of physicians. The tender care of wife and mother availed him not. Slowly but surely he wasted. Hoping against hope, trusting in the mercy of the Saviour, he calmly and heroically battled with the arch enemy, death, until Sept. 21 when the light of his life went out. By his uniform kindness to those with whom he came into contact, both socially, and in business, his strict honest, and honorable conduct in business dealings, he has won the respect and esteem of all. His example is one to be emulated by our young men, as it shows to them that industry, frugality, honesty, and kindness of heart are sure stepping stones success in business matters and also to obtaining the love and esteem of the community in which he lives. His funeral was held at Albany Sept. 22, and was one of the largest ever held here. The businessmen turned out in a body as an escort from his residence to the church, where the most solemn services were conducted by the Rev. Father Buckley, of Brodhead. The Brodhead church choir rendered the most beautiful and appropriate music. His casket was covered with flowers, the gift of loving friends from Monroe, Monticello and Albany and Dayton. He leaves a wife, daughter, father and mother, brothers and sisters, whose acute anguish as they last looked upon his dead face was pitious to see. Dear John, hail and farewell.

Wi Obituaries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Wi/GreenObits/10602 Surname: Patterson, Peebles ------------------------- Albany, Green County Wisconsin Vindicator Thursday, March 1, 1894 Maude Ethel Peterson was born in York Co., Neb. Dec. 6, 1872, and died at the home of Mrs. E. M. Peebles near Albany on Sunday, Feb. 25, 1894. The immediate cause of her death was heart failure, death coming suddenly, before many of her friends knew that she was sick. She was the daughter of J.G. and Mary Patterson. Her mother died when Ethel was but six years old. She came to live with her aunt, Mrs. Peebles, and continued to make that her home until her death. During the last two years she attended the Albany High School, teaching the summer term of her home district. Her life was singularly sweet and pure and free from those petty annoyances that often accompany thoughtless childhood. Care and love for those around her were her strongest traits of character manifesting them in that way that binds heart to heart, whose severing alone reveals the depth of love unknown before. Self, in all things was her last thought, and so diligently and unassumingly did she pursue her mission of love that the few short years spent here has been as a benediction, blessed and blessing all who came in contact with her. Men and women are said to be immortal until their work is done. Thus has she lived her allotted time. Taken from us in the flower of her youth; but called hence to a higher, more noble life. She was buried at the M.E. Church yesterday at 2:00 pm, her schoolmates attending in a body. Many flowers and tokens of love were placed upon the casket by her friends who came to do honor to her memory. H.B.W.

Wi Obituaries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Wi/GreenObits/10600 Surname: Martin ------------------------- Albany, Green County, Wisconsin Vindicator Thursday, March 29, 1894 Died at Mendota, March 19, 1894, W.H. Martin, aged 35 yeaers, 1 month and 26 days. William H. Martin, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. William Martin of this village, was born in the town of Brooklyn on Jan. 28, 1850 and lived with his parents until July 20, 1878, when, in company with a friend, he went to Minnesota with the intention of remaining only during the harvest season, but it seems, changed his mind while there and determined to see more of the world. He engaged in the occupation of a lineman which he followed successfully until some time last year when he met with an accident in Pittsburgh, Pa while adjusting a wire, and fell a distance of 35 feet, nearly causing his death and resulting in injuries from which he never entirely recovered. From there he went with a friend, Charles Phillips, to Covington, Ky. at which place his mind began to fail. He was advised to return home, which he did, arriving in Albany May 20, 1893. He was very anxious to commence medical treatment and was taken to Mendota. Hopes of his recovery were entertained up until Friday, March 16, when he met with a second accident, falling from a roof to the ground, a distance of 50 feet, receiving internal injuries which resulted in his death the following Monday. The remains were brought to his home and were interred Wednesday in the Catholic cemetery. A source of consolation to his sorrowing parents and the sister and brother who are left to mourn their loss, is a letter from a young man who has followed the same occupation and was with him continually for the past nine years, telling of the purity of his life, his temperate habits and regular attendance at the church of which he was a member, and the good name which followed him everywhere and which remained unsullied through all his wanderings.
