Vern, you asked about researching your Civil War ancestor from Green County, WI. I wonder if you've tried requesting his pension files from the National Archives? I had great luck with those--more than 100 pages which really did tell the story of my great grandfather, including his marrying and divorcing my great grandmother twice. Also, when he arrived home after the war, he was sick, and then his younger sister took sick and died, and they blamed him for bringing it home. How very sad! You download the request off the NARA site, and they send you the triplicate forms that you fill out and mail back. Then it takes about 3-4 months, but is well worth it. There are two prices, the first is for having the NARA worker photograph just a selection of the documents s/he believes would be most significant for you. The other is to have everything in the file copied. Though it seems like a lot of moola, I'd suggest having every scrap in the file copies-I found some intriguing children's names jotted on the back of an envelope in the file. Also, you might want to contact the reenactment group--they know lots of details. And, finally, there is nothing like reading through the miles of microfilm of the newspaper that served the areas where he lived. I loved reading that my kin had built a fence around his house to keep his chickens and cabbages apart--published the same day that Frank James, Jesse's brother, turned himself in. Hope this is helpful. Happy hunting. Laura in Raleigh
Hey Listers, George R. King is my 2nd great grandfather and I am trying to find information regarding his time in Jordan, Green, Wisconsin. George's parents Hesden Pryor King and Minerva Richards King apparently had a farm in Jordan and I believe that Hesden may have been an attorney in the area. Hesden died in Jordan, Green, Wisconsin on July 1, 1866. George joined the Wisconsin 31st Infantry and saw some action during the Civil War. In March of 1865, he was captured at the Battle of Bentonville here in North Carolina. George was mustered out in May of 1865 and headed back to Jordan. On the way, he met and married Maria Campbell in Kane County, Illinois on November 17, 1865. I know they lived in Jordan for at least five years, because they two children born to them in Jordan. One son, Charles W. King was born on August 15, 1866 and the other son, George Thomas King was born on January 21, 1868. Is there anyone on this list that could help me find more information on this family? Any type of information would be greatly appreciated. I would like to thank the list in advance for your assistance. Vern King Jacksonville, NC

I am looking for Frederick Shrake. Born in Pa. 1766. Some information indicates he died in 1845 in Green City, Wi. Can anyone help. I'm almost positive the spelling of the name was changed when he came over from Prussia. The family history is confusing. I don't know if he came by himself or with parents, or anything else about him. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Wi Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/GreenObits/10616 Surname: Lewis, Magee, Hickok, Dalrymple, Dooley, Klitzman, Disch, Bergy, Devine, Rutty ------------------------- FUNERAL TODAY FOR A.S.LEWIS Aged Local Citizen Passes Away Here Monday Afternoon Funeral services were held this afternoon for Amza Lewis, 78 years old, well known Monticello citizen, who passed away at his home here shortly before 5 o'clock Monday afternoon, following a lingering illness which had its inception several years ago. Short services were held at the home at 1:30 o'clock and a half hour later in the Reformed Church, with the Rev. A.Muehlmeier officiating. Burial was in Exeter cemetery. The direct cause of his death was terminal pneumonia with which he had been ill for some time. Old age complications hastened his demise. Mr. Lewis was a native of Brooklyn township, having been born there May 1, 1850, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Amza Lewis, Sr. The parents were both easterners, the father having been born in New York state and Mrs. Lewis, nee Hickok, in Vermont. The deceased's father succumbed when he was still a young boy, while Mrs. Lewis passed away 26 years ago, at the ripe age of 83. Mr. Lewis' boyhood days were spent on the old homestead in Brooklyn township, with the exception of a year or two spent in Evansville where he attended the Seminary. When he was 19 years old, he was married February 11, 1869 to Miss Mary Magee, Exeter township. The scene of the wedding was the old Magee homestead which remains as a landmark of the days when Exeter as a mining town was one of the most thriving communities between Mineral Point and Milwaukee. To this untion were born five children, three of whom died in infancy. The two remaining children, both daughters, grew to womanhood and were married, but preceded their father in death. They were Mrs. John Dalrymple, Dayton, who passed away Easter Sunday, April 3, 1896, a bride of only two and one-half weeks, and Mrs. John Dooley, who was claimed by death April 10, 1906. The first few years of the deceased's married life was spent in Iowa. Travel in those days was exceedingly slow and because of the absence of bridges, Mr. Lewis was compelled to ford the Mississippi eight times before such structures finally spanned the two shores. While a resident of Iowa, Mr. Lewis nearly lost his life in a western blizzard. At 3 o'clock one afternoon he walked to a neighbor's home to assure himself of the safety of a relative. As he was on his way home, a terrific blizzard blew up, making it impossible to see but a few feet ahead. With the sleet lashing him in the face, Mr. Lewis wandered aimlessly until 2 o'clock the next morning when he sighted a light in the distance. Nearly worn out from fatigue, he dragged himself towards the light, which happened to be in his own home. Mrs. Lewis had sat up all night holding a lamp by the window so that her husband might better find his way through the raging storm. After remaining in Iowa for two or three years, the couple moved back to Green County where the gentleman purchased the farm near Attica now owned by Herman Klitzman. After the death of his father-in-law, George Magee, Mr. Lewis acquired the old Magee homestead where he had lived for over 40 years. Mr. Lewis was subsequently married to Verena Disch, New Glarus, who still survives him. The marriage took place Jan. 21, 1897, in the Magee homestead where he had been united in wedlock 27 years before. The family came to Monticello to reside in 1900. Two years later, Mr. Lewis erected the present Jacob Bergy home, which he sold six years later and moved back onto his farm. When his health began to fail him, Mr. Lewis and family returned to Monticello in 1920. Mr. Lewis was widely known in the northern part of Green County where he had made his home practically all of his life with the exception of the few years spent in Iowa. He was an honest and upright citizen, whose motto throughout life has been, "Do unto others as you would like to have them do unto you". Besides the widow, he is survived by one son, Roy A., at home, three grandchildren, Sheldon H. and Amza Roy Lewis and Gerald A. Dooley, all of Monticello, one niece, Blanch Devine, Evansville. A sister, Mrs. Emma J. Rutty, Evansville, and three half sisters preceded him in death. MONTICELLO MESSENGER - Thursday, April 5, 1928

Hi Nancy, Are you looking for the Wood/Woods family in Green county? I have a Thomas Wood/Woods who married Edith Casey in Ohio and after her death and his remarriage I can't find him. Thought maybe you might be checking the same family. Roberta Summers.
Is there anyone who lives near the Green Co. courthouse that would be willing to do a look up for me? I'd be happy to pay for copying/postage, etc. but can't get there myself and I'm dying to find out the info!! Thanks, Nancy Wood/[email protected]
Laura, I have had no problems at the Green County courthouse. You must first fill out a sheet stating who you are and what you are there for. First time visitors are given a tour. Then you may look up the records yourself. Hi all, I'm just reposting my ties to Green Co WI as requested. My grandfather, Arthur Lee Grinnell, was born in Adams Township, Green Co. in 1883. His parents, Frank Grinnell and Rosella Day were also born in Green Co. The parents of Frank were Willard Edmonds Grinnell and Mary E. Hanks. Rosella's parents were David Cass Day and Mary Rebecca Bryant. I've got the Grinnell line back to 1636 in Rhode Island, the Day line back at least to 1756 in Mass and the Hanks line traced back to 1560 or so in England. Is anyone else researching these lines? Yours, Gene Grinnell
