I took a look at the 1850 census to try and locate John and Ann Thompson. No such luck, but I did locate this very intreguing family: 1850 Census, Dist. 24, Grant, WI, Pg. 5B, Household 67 David Beard, 24, Farming, $1500, WI Charles Thompson, 19, Farming, WI John Thompson, 17, Farming, WI Ann Thompson, 50, SCOT Ellen Thompson, 13, WI Hmm. Ann, age 50, may just be mother Thompson. Who David Beard is, hard to say. You stated that Charles "should" have been about 29 in 1860. If so, this 19 year old in 1850 seems a good match. And there is something interesting about the siblings. Per the Grant Co., WI Marriage Records compiled by the Grant Co. Genealogical Society and Parents of Grant Co., WI Marriages, compiled by Kathleen Grattan Henderson: John Thompson married Lurilda Jane Key, 1 Jan 1857, recorded in Bk. 2, Pg. 209. John is recorded as the son of John and Ann (Unknown) Thompson. Lurilda the daughter of M. (Marshall?) and Sally (Unknown) Key. Ellen Thompson married Thomas Coddington, 28 Feb 1856, recorded in Bk. 2, Pg. 23. Ellen is recorded as the daughter of John and Anne (Unknown) Thompson. Thomas the son of Joseph and Maria (Unknown) Coddington. Interesting, Charles, John, Ellen and probable mother Ann living in this household in 1850. And, "possibly" all three of these children/siblings list a John and Ann Thompson as parents. This is likely your Charles and family in 1880: 1880 Census, Township 131 And 132, Richland, Dakota Territory Source: FHL Film 1254114, National Archives Film T9-0114, Page 167C Charles Thompson, 49, Farmer, WI, WI, WI Mary, 46, Keeping House, IRE, IRE, IRE John, 24, Farmer, MN, WI, IRE Martier, 23, Farm Laborer, MN, WI, IRE William, 21, Farm Laborer, MN, WI, IRE Charles, 19, Farm Laborer, MN, WI, IRE Albert, 15, Farm Laborer, MN, WI, IRE Eugene, 11, At School, MN, WI, IRE Mary, 9, At School, MN, WI, IRE Kattie, 5, At School, MN, WI, IRE Here the children are listed as being born in Minn., but with the childrens names, this certainly appears to be them. And Wahpeton is in Richland Co. Maybe they went to MN on the way to the Dakota Territory. Good luck in the search. Dave Taft
