In a week or so, a friend and I are planning a Friday, Saturday and Sunday trip to Madison, Wisconsin for research. To prepare I have made a list if items to research, these include items like: obituaries, census, marriage/death, early naturalization records (from before Wisconsin was a state) and land records. I do have some questions however, and hope someone on the list can assist. Given I will be there on Sunday and the Historical Society Archives are closed, what other resources are available? How difficult is it to use the collection of German newspapers? Were people ever naturalized in territories? Were civil war enlistees ever naturalized at the time of enlistment? Are there tips or suggestions to make the trip more efficient? Are there message boards at each building so I can leave a note for my fellow researcher if I cannot find her and am leaving the building, etc.? Eileen Saint Paul, Minnesota
The Memorial library would be open, if you are interested in using some of the foreign family books. They hold Deutsches Geschlechterbuch, these are families lineage books of 209+ volumes. Each book has it's own index in the back of the book. http://feefhs.org/de/pom/gi/dgb-137.html Some of these volumes indexes have been put on-line on the FEEFHS site. http://feefhs.org/ Go to 'web portal index' link at top of page and enter the family name. You may find other books you might get a 'hit' on this search are held in the Memorial Library. Be sure to bring a photo id, such as a drivers license, to get into the Memorial library. Your photo copy card will work in both libaries (historical & Memorial). Card catalogs for both the Historical Society and the Memorial Library are on-line. Save time during your trip and have your searches already done from home. This is the exact same card catalog you would use while in the library. http://madcat.library.wisc.edu/index.html This is the 'guest' access link. The call number CS621 D5 is for Deutsches Geschlechterbuch. "Die Ahnenstammkartei". http://feefhs.org/fij/ahnstamm.html Use the 'guided' search, not the basic if you are looking for Deutch? and genealog?. The ? will truncate your words so you can look for both genealogical and genealogy. Also in the same stack area are other lineage books in French, etc. > Given I will be there on Sunday and the Historical Society Archives > are closed, what other resources are available? >
Your vital records that you may access at the library will only be pre-1907 (Sept 1907). http://www.shsw.wisc.edu/genealogy/vitalrecords/access.html You could access after 1907 at each individual county courthouse.
