Henry was living in Liberty Twp., Grant, WI in the 1860 census. Civil War Volunteer, Private, Co. C, 20th Infantry, enlisted 10 Aug 1862, discharged 14 Jul 1865 at Galveston, TX. Civi! l War pension file lists birth date at 5 May 1835. His death certificate lists an age of 83Y, 11M, 6D which would support a 30 Apr 1835 birthdate. Other unsubstantiated family records list his birth as 30 Apr 1835. Henry's pension file states that after the war he lived in Iowa 15 yrs, Nebraska 4 yrs, Wisconsin 20 yrs, California 3 years, then Colorado. In the 1870 Census, Henry McLyman and Margaret are living in Marcy Twp., Boone, IA, Pg. 135 with Sylvester and Nancy and Margaret's children Clard and Scott Hough. In the 1880 Census lists Henry and Margaret are living in Ogden, Boone, IA, Pg. 72A with son Sylvester and step-son Scott Hough. In 1880 Henry is listed as a Saloon Keeper, son Sylvester's occupation is listed as "Drives Team," and Scott as working in a Blacksmith Shop. The 1880 History of Boone Co., IA, Pg. 656 includes the following biography, "McLimans, Henry, saloon-keeper, Ogden; was born in Mercer county, Pennsylvania, in 1835, and in 1870 came to thi! s State, locating in Beaver township, this county; he was raised on a farm and has been in Ogden for four years; he has been married twice, first, to Miss Rachael Kitling of Wisconsin; she died, leaving two children: Sylvester and Nancy; he married again, Mrs. Margaret Houghton, a native of Pennsylvania; Mr. McLimans keeps a good stock in his line and is quite successful." Henry and Margaret are also found in the 1885 state census of Iowa living in Ogden, Yell Twp., Boone, IA. In 1885 their household included Margaret's mother Margaret Howard. The 22 Aug 1906 issue of The Fennimore Times states, "Henry McLimans and wife have left California and are now at Boulder, CO." In 1905 Henry's pension file states that he was living in Oakdale, Stainislaus Co., CA, near Modesto, CA. Henry's death certificate states that he was buried in Valmont? Colorado. Rachel: Rachel's birth and mother's maiden name per Ancestry.Com record by Kenneth Carpenter (kenng@freewwweb.com) and unkn! own submitter (scottlewis@alumni.uop.edu). Rachel's middle initial may have been "L." Family rumor says that Henry went to war and returned to find his wife with child and refused to have anything to with her thereafter. Henry and Rachel divorced 12 Mar 1866 in Grant Co., WI. By decree of the court, Henry was given "the care, custody and education of the children." The divorce decree states that Rachel McLimans "has been guilty of the several acts of adultery therein charged." Nancy McLimans, b. 1-Jun-1862, Grant Co., WI. She married James Philamalee, 30-Mar-1879, in Blue River, Waterstown Twp., Grant, WI, (son of William Philamalee and Nancy ____). Source for Marriage: Grant Co., WI Marriages, Book 9, Pg. 52. The marriage record for Nancy states that she is the daughter of Henry and Margaret (Unknown) McClimans, however, Henry's pension application states that he only had two children and they were both by his first wife, Rachel Kaightlinger. Nancy may have stated Margaret since that was her father's wife at the time. Per Memorable Happenings in the Grant Co. Herald Newspaper, 1870-1879, compiled by Cheryl D. Lemanski, James marriage is recorded in the 3 Apr 1879 issue of the Herald. It is interesting that Nancy married in Grant Co., WI since her father remained in Boone Co., IA from 1870-85. She likely met James while visiting family in WI. Birthdate of 1 Jun 1862 per Henry's Civil War pension file. In an Apr 1898 document Henry gives! 1 Jun 1862 as her birthdate; in Mar 1915 he states __ Jun 1862. Per Bob Howe (Bhowegen47@aol.com), Kansas City MO, Jan 2002, Nancy's obituary states that she was born on 10 Jul 1862.
