    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Dempsey Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/lEC.2ACE/378.1 Message Board Post: Michael, I'm not related and can't be positive, but it would "appear" that Eliza Dempsey may not have been the child of Philo and Lydia Dempsey. Here is the family in the 1860 census: 1860 Census, Fennimore, Grant, WI, Pg. 149, 8 Jul 1860, Household 343 Philo Dempsey, 46, Farmer, $5000, $1000, NY Lydia, 40, MA Silas, 19, NY Frances/??antes?? (male), 14, WI Robert, 9, WI Similida?? (female), 1, WI Agigail, 76, NY (mother of Philo or Lydia?) Eliza, 8, WI Well, based on the order of the children, Eliza is definitely out of place. This would seem to indicate that she was not the daughter of Philo and Lydia. This follows through to the 1870 census. 1870 Census, Fennimore, Grant, WI, Household 144 Philo Dempsey, 50, farmer, $1400, $700, NY Libbie, 52, Keeps House, NY Samilde, 10, WI Eliza, 18, At Home, WI Here again Eliza is listed last indicating that she was probably not the child of Philo. I realize that this must be disappointing, but seems to be true. When and Who did Eliza marry? Could that record provide any insight? In the 1850 the Philo's nearest neighbors, per the census were McReynolds, Weidard?, Goodrich, Waters, Simmons, and several Russell households. Wish this was a more definitive answer, but that's all I can come up with at the moment. The Grant Co. marriage records do include the following: Dempsey, Eliza E. married George W. Holmes, 23 Oct 1874, recorded in Bk. 6, Pg. 154. Eliza is listed as the daughter of Philo and Lydia (Unknown) Dempsey. George the son of Richard R. and L. F. (Unknown) Holmes. If this Eliza was the child of someone else, it was either well hidden or unknown to the family. Per the Grant Co. death records: Holmes, Eliza (nee Dempsey), afe 77, wife of George Holmes, died 20 Jan 1929. Eliza is recorded as the daughter of Unknown Dempsey parents. I'm not sure how easy it would be to find, but you might try looking for obituaries of some of the Dempsey siblings/parents to see if they reference a sister/step-sister or daughter/adopted daughter. Per the death records again, the following children of Philo and Lydia (Walker) Dempsey died in Grant Co., WI: Similde (Dempsey) Simons, age 75, died 14 Mar 1917. Silas Henry Dempsey, age 77, died 12 Dec 1917. Also found is: Philo Dempsey, age 75, died 28 May 1890. Again, on the obituary angle, here are a few possibilites that may be worth requesting copies of to look for clues: >From "Highlights of The Fennimore Times [newspaper], 1889-1899," compiled by Cheryl D. Lemanski: Dempsey, Lydia, wife of Phile, born 1820 in NY, died 11 Apr 1894, Mr. Ida, 11 Apr 1894. Recorded in the 19 Apr 1894 issue of the Times. Dempsey, Philo, died 29 May 1890 (28 or 29 May apparently), recorded in the 30 May 1890 issue of the Times. Dempsey, Robert Walker, died 21 Apr 1899, Fennimore, married to Cloe Ann Clark, 22 Oct 1871, Fennimore, recorded in the 26 Apr 1899 issue of the Times. Any or all of these obituaries could include information about siblings. Information about obtaining issues of the Fennimore Times can be found at: http://www.shsw.wisc.edu/library/services/obtaining_copies.html and http://www.shsw.wisc.edu/genealogy/newspapers/access.html Good luck in the seach. 3. Thank You very much for your information. I do have Elizas marriage certificate that shows Philo and Lydia as parents. Lydia's obit doesn't list Eliza as a child. It says 6 children 5 living. But Eliza didn't die for many years. I will try to track down the obit of Philo to see if that sheds any light as you suggest.
