My father barely remembers his father, and this is where I am stuck. He will be 60 tomorrow, so his natural father, Gordon Louis Smith, would have been around about 1920-1924. My dad had his SS# but lost it! RUMOR has it that Gordon was born and raised in Platteville, as was my dad's mother, Ada Louise Johnson. At the age of 19, and against Ada's parent's opinion, Ada and Gordon had my dad, Archie in Janesville, WI. Whether they were actually married is not known, but my dad's early memories are him sitting on Gordon's knee; Gordon was wearing a military uniform (which service? Not known). Ada soon after remarried to Bill Schaffer and they were together a long time before she died in 1995. The last we heard before then is that Gordon died in a car crash in California?? Does anyone have any ideas about tracking Gordson down? Checking with LDS index yields some results that COULD match, but with a common last name and possibly no marriage record, where to look?
