This is a wonderful genealogy poem that I re-found for you all to read, in caswe there are some in the group who have not as yet read it. I hope you enjoy it as much as i do. It pertains to genealogy and is quite well written. As I say, I've really enjoyed reading it! THE DASH! © By: Linda Ellis I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on her tombstone from the beginning...to the end. He noted that first came the date of her birth and spoke of the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years. For that dash represents all the time that she spent alive on earth... and now only those who loved her know what that little line is worth. For it matters not, how much we own; the cars....the house... the cash. What matters is how we like and love and how we spend our dash. So think about this long and hard... are there things you'd like to change? For you never know how much time is left. (You could be at "dash mid-range.") If we could just slow down enough to consider what's true and real, and always try to understand the way other people feel. And be less quick to anger, and show appreciation more and love the people in our lives like we've never loved before. If we treat each other with respect, and more often wear a smile... remembering that this special dash might only last a little while. So, when your eulogy's being read with your life's actions to rehash... would you be proud of the things they say about how you spend your dash?

I believe that they have some information on the Grant County Asylum (Home, Poor Farm, among other names). The Society also has an extensive collection of obits and Funeral home records that have been accumulated over the years. You will need to give her as much information as possible so she can search their files. Also you should include a self addressed stamped envelope and a nominal amount such as $3.00 to cover the cost of the search and support the Society. I noted in your query that you did not mention the name of your ancestor. You may want to repost your message with the name and perhaps I or someone else may be able to help you on-line.

However I won't be able to complete it all for you as there are alot of GARTHWAITE names in the Grant County records. Searching the early Indices to Marriages and Death I found two listings of children of Benjamin and Isabel GARTHWAITE (note that neither identified Isabel's maiden name of BRUCE). From the Index to the Parents of Brides and Grooms in Grant County by Kathleen Wolf found that Isabel GARTHWAITE daughter of Benjamin GARTHWAITE and Isabel ? married John W. TUCKWOOD 25 Dec 1875 recorded in Vol 7 page 57 of Grant County Marriage records. Also from the same index found that Benjamin GARTHWAITE son of Benjamin GARTHWAITE and Isabel ? married Ruth D. MILES 19 Aug 1866 recorded in Vol 4 page 45 of Grant County Marriage records. Perhaps more tomorrow if I can sort out some of the lines.
