I have that article. Do you have the ones from the Rooks Co. history books, "Lest We Forget"? If not, I can send them to you. It has more information about the children of Charles and Margrete (My mother was named for her. She was a daughter of Michael) I have visited Gertrude's gravesite several times. I also have taken pictures of all the Hilgers' headstones in the cemetery. If I find anything of interest, I will let you know too.

The picture was taken in 1916 after the death of their mother. Gertrude is also buried in the Catholic cemetary in Plainville, KS. The only lead I have on Peter Hilger (no S) appears in the 1850 census for Belgium, Wisconsin in Washington County with an about birth date of 1799 with a wife and three children with the 6 year old born in Germany and the younger two in Wisconsin. If I can hook him up to Michael in Germany I'll let you know.

I only know what I posted in the inquiry. If memory serves correct, I believe the uncle Gertrude went to be with in Grant Co. was Peter Hilgers but I have found no information on him. I keep digging as I can. If you find any more, please let me know. I have information on Charles' family and will share what I have.

They often are full of unexpected genealogical information. Also, do you have his naturalization papers? They may be filed in Grant County--or he may have been naturalized as a consequence of his service in the war.

I am searching for the father of Charles whose name was Michael and I believe lived and died in Dusseldorf, Germany. His wife brought her sons to Wisconsin after the death of her husband. Charles married after the Civil War and eventually moved to Rooks County Kansas accompanied by his mother.

Pronouns and "his father" and "my father" can be unclear in describing what we're looking for. Whose father died in Germany? Michael Albert's father, Michael William's father, or Charles Hilger's father? It's also helpful to provide a timeframe. I am descended from NAPP/KNAPPs in early Grant County (beginning in 1846), one of whom had HILGERTIN/HILGER antecedents in Werlau, Coblenz, Germany. Do you know where in Germany your Charles HILGERS came from?
