Couldn't agree more with Aleise. Mari, our listmom is always there & Dave, like the reliable uncle, too! <G> Many other contributors deserve kudos... And, without those questions from listers; newbies, lurkers and archive readers would learn a lot less, too, so everyone counts! I could use a lot of bandwidth stating frustrations with cousins or family-file submitters who had no sources listed in their GEDCOM or other data files, and with myself, for the early times when I didn't record them well, if at all. It really just makes for more work for everyone involved. *no_SOURCE_means_no_fact!* No citation means forgery/fraud. From the wisdom of those who've helped me (a good amount from this list), I've learned to keep a log book of what resources are available, and which I've checked. I now log each search I make in the FHC, libraries, local repositories, etc., and online. What a difference in efficiency it makes, and might not be a bad footnote to add to files you share. Someone may even catch something you missed. The National Genealogical Society (NGS) has a great listing of their accepted Standards in 5 major categories. I am learning and training myself to use them. I imagine my research is on trial and I must produce witnesses and material evidence to prove it to a jury consisting of a mixture of individuals who've both never done a single day of research, and those who are experts who can't be fooled. That way, anyone would be able to locate the sources, check them and conclude beyond reasonable doubt, that it's reliable and my witnesses are not frauds. That's the ideal, anyway. <g> Maybe someday I'll be competent enough to take the torch and help light the way for the next generation of genies, as our advisors on this list have done so generously for us. TY Mari, you'll save future genies a lot of redundant searches and wasted time! Hi Eileen, I'm in NY now, but spent most of my childhood in Cassville, Grant Co.... My family has been there for a long time, Fennimore, Lancaster, Bloomington, Beetown, etc. Families I'm researching in Grant County are, Hampton, Lull, Gates, Clauer, Budd, Morse, Eversoll, Dudley, Hutchcroft, Goldman, Metcalf, Porter, Griggs, Rauch, Petry, Feldor/Felder, Kaufman, and there's even a Haas in there. These are my direct lines, but then there's all the stuff I'm doing for my cousins' benefit... Basically I'm related to all of Grant County. ;-) Oh and Mari, not all those people are only subscribed to one of the lists. I get the digest and the regular list (I like to have backup copies of stuff if I discover I've missed something). Thanks, Mike. I don't want to do the research myself, though--I want to hire someone. I've already tried the preliminary steps on my own. However, even with my Bachelors degree, graduate work, and status as a published author, I am apparently unqualified for dealing with government forms. Greetings, Listers. I'm considering hiring someone to research my grandfather's military record (US Navy, from about 1898 through WWII). Have any of you hired a researcher? I would appreciate any advice along these lines. Respond in the list or directly to my email address: metaphor@mbay.net. I have been a subscriber to the Grant and Crawford county list for the last (3) years. I was born and raised in PDC. Left Wi in 1943 joining the Navy and retiring in 1963. My mother was a Gremore (Grimard) whose ancestors settled in PDC in the 1820's. For myself going back to Wi has been only a wish tho a impossibility. The sites are great, made alot of contacts with "cousins" and other interested people. I especially enjoy Dave Tafts involvement with the site. The info and directions he provides is something else. I have lived in Virginia for a long time. It is a beautiful state and there are rivers and valleys that remind me so much of Wisconsin. Mari, Thank you for the reference to this article. I am just starting with my genealogy, and while entering information into my genealogy program last night, I was pondering what the difference was between a Source and a Citation. I started entering the information I had collected, and then started over entering a different way. This article has answered all my questions on how to enter the sources and citations that I have collected thus far. As always you are there when we need you.
