Dave, Thank you for the census information. I do think this in my family. They were not in Grant County in 1850 or 1860. By 1860 they have settled in Jackson Co. Ks. Wanda
I am researching the BERTRAND surname, more specifically, Theodore BERTRAND and his wife Kathryn KELNHOFER. Theodore was born 12 April 1882 in Walhain, Kewaunee Co., WI. He died 2 June 1921 at Lancaster Hospital in Grant County. Theodore and his wife apparently worked at cheese factories there, it is presumed that they went to Grant County somewhere around the turn of the century. Anybody with any information about this particular family--please let me know. Thanks Trina Rabida Kewaunee, WI trina@itol.com
The reason that I posted the request that the software questions be done at the software boards, or the software list, is because there IS a list for that particular area of concern. Yes, it is genealogy related to a degree, but there ARE lists specifically for them. At 09:00 PM 2/19/02 , Tammie Shelton wrote: >Apparently I'm not supposed to ask questions about FTM >on this list. No need to apologize......that's the reason I posted the explanation. I didn't say that it had to be surnames ONLY that come through this list. Burials, cemeteries, anything related to the county and anyone's ancestors are acceptable. This doesn't necessarily mean JUST a surname. It can go beyond that, and has. It was a good place to start, in that at least you got the information that there is another list and board where the question can be asked. One reason that I request that the software questions remain on the lists provided for them, is because more often than not, software questions end up in a battle over which program is better.......a never ending battle, because everyone works differently, everyone has their own preferences, and no one software is perfect for everyone. I don't want any wars waged on any of my lists. :) >By the way, what does Rural Route 1 popcorn have to do >with genealogy? Nothing. Popcorn has nothing to do with genealogy at all..........and that's just one of the reasons that I ended that topic also. It was off topic, and I did comment on it.......but if you have been admin for a while, you will soon learn that sometimes it works to comment, and then the topic dies. That didn't happen, so I ended it by asking that it not be discussed anymore. I'm sorry you took offense at my directive.....It was in no way meant as a personal affront.........it was informational for you just as it was for the the whole list. Nothing more, nothing less. I'd not had a post about software since I took over this list, and it was needful for me to make known my preferences regarding the topic. As list admin,. I have the perogative to set the limitations or criteria for the lists I admin. I'm pretty liberal and congenial for the most part. I very seldom make requests of this nature, and neither am I in the habit of trying to embarrass any subscriber, no matter what their level of expertise is. Especially those who are new to genealogy. Anyone who has known me for very long can attest to my consistent support for the Newbies. I've been a staunch supporter of them from day one. Again........I apologize for apparently making you feel put upon. That certainly was not the intention. Wanda, The 1855 Grant Co. Census index lists the following: Lutze, J., Wingville Township, Pg. 2 Lutze, W., Wingville Township, Pg. 2 Could this be your John and William? Unfortunately, the 1855 census only includes number of males and females in the household. No further information is listed. No sign of either of them in 1850 or 1860 Grant Co. Dave Taft
Lesa, Good question. I had no idea where Albert was buried. I see the way your are....Ha!...you made me do some additional looking on my GGG Aunt Mary Jane. Mary Jane (McGhan) Groshong died in Stanford, Judith Basin, MT on 4 Aug 1898. Albert was still living at the time. Albert died 26 Jul 1909. His death is recorded in Grant Co. death records, Bk. 11, Pg. 270. Also recorded in the 28 Jul 1909 issue of the Fennimore Times per "Highlights of The Times Review, alias Fennimore Times, 1900-1909," compiled by Cheryl D. Lemanski. His death record indicates that he was divorced. More looking found that he married a third time after Mary Jane's death. Based on tonight's review, here is all I "now" know about Albert Ross Groshong: Albert Ross Groshong, b. ABT 1853, (son of Valentine Groshong and Eliza Ferry). He married (1) Augusta Bell Latham, 12-Oct-1886, in Montfort, Grant, WI, b. ABT 1855, (daughter of Lorenzo Latham and Orlintha ____) d. 26-Oct-1887, Grant Co., WI. He married (2) Mary Jane McGhan, 13-Mar-1889, in Grant Co., WI, b. 22-Jul-1849, Fennimore, Grant, WI, (daughter of Silas S. McGhan and Mary Ann Potter) d. 04-Aug-1898, Stanford, Judith Basin, MT. He married (3) Sarah Elizabeth Ferris, 12-May-1904, in Grant Co., WI, (daughter of John Ferris and Mary Stevens). Albert died 26-Jul-1909, Montfort, Grant, WI. An Albert Groshong is listed in the 1880 Highland, Iowa, WI census, age 26, born in Wisconsin living with a Jane Groshong. Albert is listed as Jane's stepson. Albert's marriage to Augusta Bell Latham on 12 Oct 1886 is recorded in Grant Co. marriage records, Bk. 10, Pg. 369. His marriage to Mary Jane McGhan on 13 Mar 1889 is recorded in Grant Co. marriages, Bk. 11, Pg. 62. His marriage to Sarah Elizabeth (Ferris) Dale is recorded in Grant Co., marriages, Bk. 13, Pg. 208. Albert's death recorded in Grant Co. death records, Bk. 11, Pg. 270. His death record indicates he was divorced. Also recorded in the 28 Jul 1909 issue of the Fennimore Times per "Highlights of The Times Review, alias Fennimore Times, 1900-1909," compiled by Cheryl D. Lemanski. Augusta: Augusta's death is recorded in Grant Co. WI deaths, Bk. 2, Pg. 90. Mary: Moved to Stanford, MT in October 1894. Had no children. Sarah: Per Sarah's marriage record to Albert R. Groshong, she was previously married to a Mr. Dale. She married John M. Dale on 23 Dec 1886 in Iowa Co., WI, recorded in State Vol. 3, Pg. 58. Her third marriage to Matthew Peacock is recorded in Grant Co. marriage Bk. 18, Pg. 626. Children by Augusta Bell Latham: i Augusta Arabell Groshong, b. 26-Oct-1887, Wingville Twp., Grant, WI. She married Ernst Schondt/Schoudt, 6-Oct-1906, in Grant Co., WI. Birth record per Grant Co. births, Vol. 2, No. 227. Marriage record per Grant Co. marriages, Bk. 13, Pg. 208. Also recorded in the 18 May 1904 issue of the Fennimore Times newspaper per "Highlights of The Times Review, alias Fennimore Times, 1900-1909," compiled by Cheryl D. Lemanski. There may have been other children of Albert, but this is the only one I located. I presume that Albert Groshong is buried in Grant Co. Quite possibly in the Fennimore Prairie cemetery. You would need to check in the Grant Co. Genealogical Society's cemetery records to be sure. His obituary in the Fennimore Times may also list where he is buried. Okay, where he was buried really was "your" question, but you provided many answers for me tonight. So glad you brought this up. Now I know a little more about Mr. Groshong. Hopefully this provided you a few new things as well. Here is a photo of Albert and Mary Jane (McGhan) Groshong: http://members.cowtown.net/dtaft/Mcghanalbum1.html How are you related to Uncle Albert?? Dave Taft
These three surnames are among those listed in Tammie Shelton's signature. They also appear in my Napp/Knapp database. Carl J. Kreul married Mildred A. Bailie in Lancaster on August 18, 1941. Hattie Pierce (daughter of Charles Edwin Pierce) married Fred Leon Knapp in Dubuque on October 22, 1915. I have the following Roesches, connected one way or another to the Napp/Knapp lines: Brenda Ella Gary Philip Regina Robert =============== Always use real butter. =============== Mary Thiele Fobian Writer/Editor Pacific Grove, CA
Apparently I'm not supposed to ask questions about FTM on this list. I'm new to genealogy and I didn't realize that we had to stick to surnames only. Everyone on this list seems so helpful that I thought it would be a good place to start. Sorry.
