Much of that line it seems ended up disbursed from Grant Co. WI via Dubuque, as many have. I think this particular person is responsible for many of us distant cousins having primary sources of information on our connected lines. He's made trips to Grant County for research and has generously shared online and off (a myfamily site where I was astounded to find some 70+ distant cousins from a line I'd thought I'd never find good info on--ha! just goes to show you...hang in there & ya never know). I confess to being waaaay behind on adding paper data to my digital files, so I may have more specifics on their lines which I just don't have readily at hand, but I can certainly give you these folks' email addy. One of them in the mix is a genealogist based in Utah. (I know...lucked out on that one too...go figure) (btw: I've kin in Ames, an x sister-in-law who's staff at ISU--her kids sent that now infamous popcorn <G>. Clayton Co. IA roots on the other side.) A side note on that difficult to research surname stuff: The two kinds of names I find the most challenging: Those obscure surnames which no one seems to ever hear of, and those very common ones. Well, that cousin was related to a line which had both....obscure and extremely common. Never give UP on those brick walls and wall flower surnames! Di

    2. Mari, You are a great list admin. It's a thankless job no matter how well you manage it, you can't please all the folks nor keep from correcting some. I've been corrected many times on lists, had some never respond, been flamed, had nasty sarcastic remarks, snide snippy short tempers, the whole shebang. Many times, I've found that I had information which someone who'd been nasty, needed. Their loss. **Hang in there.....& don't worry about those with thin skins. I'm sorry Tammy left. Perhaps it was a sequence of bad experiences for her, and she'll come back when she realizes it's not a personal thing. As I conveyed previously, I'm even more sorry I brought up the popcorn From GRANT County cultural side note which was subject labeled as OFF-Topic, because it obviously tweaked someone's nerves and rattled some cages, but mostly because it made trouble for you Mari. (hanging head) Many lists have just as many differing topical boundaries. We as list members just have to learn which is which and adjust. It's not up to the admin to kiss everyone's proverbial baby. There are a few lists I'm currently sub'd to which don't have admins and I was considering adopting one (some) of them, but this sort of thing makes me aware of just what a p.i.t.a. (not explaining that acronym) it can be. Thank goodness this list does have a good admin, because it is much nicer to know it's in good hands and when snags do arise, it is handled well, timely and fairly--not so with those non-admin lists. Smile. Di <-- Wondering if Dave's POTTER folks connected via McGHAN? are related to her cousin's Potter from Grant WI and Iowa (State) Reed-Potter-Cooper; VA>OH>WI>IA. (hanging head) No......everyone is responsible for themselves. I inadvertently helped along the popcorn thing. Tried to deal with it a certain way, and it failed. The popcorn topic had nothing whatsoever to do with the software topic. Someone made the correlation.....and I'm sorry that was done, because it aided in Tammy feeling singled out. You are NOT responsible for what's happened with Tammy. As far as tweaking someone else's nerves, every last one of us needs a good dose of congeniality, and forgiveness.....(Yes, I said forgiveness) toward one another. I firmly believe that there was a reason for being told to "Love one another". > Many lists have just as many differing topical boundaries. We as list >members just have to learn which is which and adjust. It's not up to the >admin to kiss everyone's proverbial baby. Um......I'll kiss anyone's baby........but will limit it to that! <g> Wouldn't be much of a granny if I didn't! :) > There are a few lists I'm currently sub'd to which don't have admins and I >was considering adopting one (some) of them, but this sort of thing makes me >aware of just what a p.i.t.a. (not explaining that acronym) it can be. Oh, no! I'll be the first one to tell you that you should *never* let what happens on any one list affect your opinion, or desires to participate on another.....no matter what the level is. I was run off a list when I first came to the internet.....worst of it was, I was co-admin! I nearly turned my back on Rootsweb, the lists, the whole shebang.....and if it weren't for the support and kindness of another list admin, I'd be gone............(Thanks to Jeff Scism, who is on this list also!) Never let what someone else says do that to you........If you deserve the criticism, then swallow hard, and learn the lesson. If you didn't, well, there IS always ONE who knows. That should count for much. As long as you can live with yourself, you'll be ok. (That is as long as the viewpoint you have is an honest one) If you have had a wee voice tell you to adopt a list, for goodness sake, do it! I'll help in any way I can.......seriously!! >Thank >goodness this list does have a good admin, because it is much nicer to know >it's in good hands and when snags do arise, it is handled well, timely and >fairly--not so with those non-admin lists. >Smile. Di, the non admin lists are watched by the Staff......what little staff there is left. And believe you me, these people have their hands full. You have *no* idea how many lists are "assigned" to each person! No one can do any one list justice at that rate. I'm not saying that there aren't bad admins. There are. In fact that's how I got my first surname list to admin. The admin that had the list was kicked off for his underhanded, and less than congenial way of handling it. >Di <-- Wondering if Dave's POTTER folks connected via McGHAN? are related >to her cousin's Potter from Grant WI and Iowa (State) Reed-Potter-Cooper; >VA>OH>WI>IA. > (deleted a message I'd skimmed just as the Potter name caught my eye) Di?
