Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/lEC.2ACE/372.2 Message Board Post: Hi again, Just another thought on that District 24 question. Relating the occupations of your listed folks, it appears to be a village or town location as opposed to a farm or more rural setting. (wagon maker, tailor, etc.) You can help narrow down the place at least by trying to find a nearby tavern or hotel (which can usually be seen labeled in the margin of the census page). Many villages and towns ("downtown") had taverns or hotels, but you may find a pattern which can be a helpful clue as to in which town your folks were residents. Also located on the Grant County GenWeb page, is a very useful settlement listing, of which I was recently reminded for help. It's just above Dave Taft's townships map link on the main page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigrant/settlements.htm Happy sleuthing! Kin D

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/lEC.2ACE/372.1 Message Board Post: Hi Rose, I can't help with the Grogan question, but regarding District 24, it is several townships. I believe it is most of the northern/northwestern Grant County Townships, just by process of elimination from those listed individually on the 1850 census. I've viewed the entire district and unfortunately as in some other such labeled districts, none of the individual townships, villages or post offices are listed on any page. These are the 1850 Grant Co. District 25 townships. - Fennimore - Harrison Twp - Hazel Green - Highland - Jamestown - Lima - Paris - Platteville - Smeltzer Grove - Wingville We were discussing a related issue recently on the WIGRANT Rootsweb mailing list. I wanted to see if we could find out which townships were included and in what order on any census which is labeled "unknown" or "various" or "district #." I don't believe we managed to find any consistent trend to the enumeration order of townships in different census (i.e., alphabetical, geographical), so it really helps to have a number of people to add input where they knew their ancestor's locations throughout a space of time. You can view a township map by clicking on the link "Dave Taft's Grant County Township Map" (thanks Dave!) from the following page, managed by Robin Kaspar (thanks Robin!): http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigenweb/ I don't have any known district 24 ancestors as yet, so I can't give you a point of reference. Hopefully you'll be able to narrow down your folk's location, and perhaps some other Grant County researchers will be able to lend assistance. Good Luck! Kin

The Hallenberger sisters were brought here from Germany by Louis and Henry. I have a lot of names, dates and some locations for descendants. What information I have came from a cousin in Stitzer sometime in the 1960s but have been unable to locate him or any offspring. I have information on the descendants of Henry as most of them settled in South Dakota, where I live, Wyoming, Nebraska and some in Iowa. Any help I can get will be gratefully received. Beverly J. 3. Hi David, Thank you so much for taking the time to look. I think I got some of my info from the Lemanski book when I was in PdC & Bloomington a few years ago. I have not come across the info on a Rhonda. I would certainly appreciate seeing what you have. I do have all the 1880 family in PdC & Bloomington and Millville. This family is a real challenge. I suspect A.J. is a brother of James in Bloomington and John in Millville, Clayton, Iowa. I find a reference that John was in Fairplay before going to Millville. Do you know anything about Fairplay, Jamestown, WI? James has one son, Caleb who stays in Bloomington and his daughter marries a KOECKE, the other son settles in Hanibal,Missouri. They have scattered all up and down the Mississippi, on both sides. I also have a note that Elsey Jane Kinyon wife of J. Kinyon d. Sep. 11, 1872 age 26 yrs 9 mo. and 5 days. There is a tombstone in the Bridgeport Cemetery. I suspect husband was A.J. Kinyon. That is why I have been trying to find something that would give a parent, etc. Your expertise is much appreciated!! Phyllis At 09:19 AM 2/24/02 -0600, you wrote: >Phyllis, > >Interesting question. 3. Phyllis, Interesting question. I can't locate the 1875 marriage of A.J. to Victoria in Grant Co., or anywhere else in the state using the Ancestry.com state marriage index. This marriage is listed in the Grant Co. Herald newspaper book by Cheryl Lemanski as taking place in Wyalusing. She listed a Bk and Pg number for the Grant Co. marriage records, but it's actually that for his marriage to Elsa. No parents were listed on the marriage record for A.J. and Elsa. This must be them in the 1880 Crawford Co. Since Alonzo is listed last and has no profession listed, he may be a child from a previous marriage for Sarah, or a nephew. None of the neighboring families are Vonn. Only a couple persons nearby are from NY--one woman from the immediate next door family--Armida Hyde, and two families down, Wm. E. Smith. There is a John Atwood listed 1860 in Hazel Green p.224 (index #): Grant County, WI. Hazel Green PO; page 8. Lines 13-14; Dwelling 58, Family 62. John ATWOOD; age 70; Male; Merchant; RealEstate $800; Personal 1,500; Born MA Laura " 54; F; Born Maine The 2 both have folks from Maine, & there is a George W. Another observance: Next to the Fennimore ATWOOD, is the family of (Tausman?) LOWELL from Ohio, and very near the family of Geo Wentworth in Maine, are two Lowell families--Nathaniel & James. Don't know if it's just a coincidence of common names or a clue. Perhaps ordering the marriage record would provide more specifics. Those early records are often scant on details or one sided (the person filing the info's side of family). The info in the usual marriage indexes is what you already know. The original record might be the only source that would unveil more. Good luck in your search for Louisa! KinD

Now I need to find her with new husband on the 1860 Census, in Grant County, Fennimore Twp, page 146. This would be John Atwood, Louisa and possible children of Louisa's: Fidelia age 9 or 10 and maybe a Charles. She was born Louisa Rappleyea of Tonawanda, NY and in 1847 married Lorenzo Dow Wentworth. Her second marriage is in Grant County on 15 Apr 1857 to John Atwood. Can anyone look up the census and tell me if she is with John Atwood and if there are children and names and ages etc.. Also on the Atwood / Wentworth marriage, does it say she was a widow or divorced or does it give her maiden name. Thanks to anyone who can help me with details. Shelly Jay (nee Rappleyea)
