Hello everyone! I introduced myself when I first joined the group. I am very new to genealogy, and attempting to uncover my Mother's roots in Grant County. Yesterday, for the first time in our lifes, my mother and I met her Great Aunt from Fennimore and a Great Uncle in Prairie du Chien. My Mother's Mother died when she was just 5mo. old, and this whole part of our tree is full of people we have never met. My mother's Great Grandmother was Rose Copus Dailey (1885 - 1954), married to Stephan Dailey (1877 - 1960). I located their burial plot yesterday at the Nagle Cemetery. I have pieced together that Steve and Rose had 4 Children, Arthur (1916-1969), Arnold, Ethel (married a Speise, unsure of spelling) and Cora (1903-1926), my mother's Grandmother. She married George Bedward(1893-1939), and both are buried at Nagle Cemetery. Only one person remembers Rose, and really couldn't provide me with any leads to good information. Because her daughter, Cora, died so young, this part of the family is a mystery to everyone that I have spoke to. Can anyone give me a lead to go further here? Thanks all. Terri Zielke
Beverly, Sorry for the delay, but I've been out of town. Here are a few items that might help: >From "Memorable Happenings in the Grant Co. Herald [newspaper], 1870-1879," compiled by Cheryl D. Lemanski: Julius, Henry, married Anna Hollenberger, 14 Dec 1870, Liberty Twp., recorded in the 20 Dec 1870 issue of the Herald. >From "Memorable Happenings in the Grant Co. Herald [newspaper], 1843-1869," compiled by Cheryl D. Lemanski: Julius, Charles (of Lancaster), died 1 Jul 1863, Snyder's Bluff, MS, recorded in the 6 Oct 1863 issue of the Herald. >From "Highlights of the Fennimore Times, 1889-1899," compiled by Cheryl D. Lemanski: Julius, Louis, died 18 Mar 1897, Stitzer, recorded in the 24 Mar 1897 issue of the Times. >From "Highlights of the Fennimore Times, 1900-1909," compiled by Cheryl D. Lemanski: Ottemeyer, Sophia Julius, married to Henry, died 26 Oct 1897, Stitzer, recorded in the 10 Jan 1906 issue of the Times. Also included in this item is that Henry E. Ottemier (another spelling) was in Co. C, 43rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, he died in 1905/6 in Stitzer. Henry married (2) Sophia J. (Hass/Hatz) Schupener on 13 May 1998. These papers are on microfilm at the Wisconsin Historical Society. They do charge about $15 per roll via interlibrary loan. They will look-up a request for a fee. Information is available at: http://www.shsw.wisc.edu/genealogy/newspapers/access.html I think they were doing one look-up/copy for free, but they must have been overwhelmed with requests. Dave Taft

Happened to come across the following reference to Platteville while doing some unrelated (no pun intended) research this morning. You can read the entire article at http://www.crimelibrary.com/americana/dillinger/dillingerred.htm [BEGIN QUOTE] On a sort of comical note, OLeary one day returned to the law office and informed Piquette that Dillinger and Van Meter had formulated a plan to rob three banks at once in the town of Platteville, Wisconsin the attorneys home-town. Piquette and OLeary drove immediately to the Probasco home where the lawyer pleaded with the two bank robbers to abandon the plan because his family and friends could be affected and that it would appear as though he had cased the banks for them. After Piquette threatened to drop him as a client, Dillinger relented. As Piquette and his investigator left the house, Van Meter glared at OLeary and grunted, Why dont you keep your mouth shut, anyway? Just came across this bit on information on Bloomington: BLOOMINGTON Originally known as Tafton, the "Blooming Town" was named after the agricultural "blooming" that occurred in the area after a local blacksmith patented a device for sowing oats in 1867. Does anyone know who the blacksmith was that patented the oat sowing device? My great grandfather, John Edward Bowden, was a blacksmith in this region at the time. Linda
> Does anyone know who the blacksmith was that patented the oat sowing >device? My great grandfather, John Edward Bowden, was a blacksmith in this >region at the time. Linda, I don't know the answer to your question, but did see a Richard BOWDEN in an article at the Wisconsin Historial Society Digital Library & Archives. The Dodgeville Sun article, dated January 13, 1906, states: "Richard Bowden of Galena, who is 83 years old, has been in the [lead and zinc mining] business for 60 years." =============== Always use real butter. =============== Mary Thiele Fobian Writer/Editor Pacific Grove, CA

I never had quite thought about things from this approach; however it sounds very methodical and quite reasonable in order to determine a "future" name for the "town" in an upcoming census. I had visited the url you suggested reguarding "Dave Taft's link; but that kind of left me "spinning" and I didn't think I was getting anywhere; then again, it was late night and I wasn't exactly "fresh" for the occassion. :) Again thank you for your time and suggestions.
