Be sure to contact the Historical Society. They have a bundle of information. Even index cards where everyone is buried in the various cemeteries. But I agree with everyone else, the Karman Library is fantastic and the people are absolutely great. DeLories (Robinson) Vaughn
Thanks all, I haven't had much luck in contacting the campground near Lancaster (although I'll try Klondyke tomorrow) or the on near Belmont (closest I could find to Platteville). I did get in touch with the ranger at Nelson Dewey in Cassville. They're open and have plenty of sites available and the drive isn't too bad from there (I'm from Cassville orginally). Thanks again for the help on that end. I'll be digging up LaVon Hall's number soon. I forgot she didn't have a computer. Kathleen is actually my second cousin, but I've lost her number as well (so thanks for sending it). WOW re: the Karmann Library. I called them today and they were very helpful including giving me parking tips for Platteville (I have a small RV I'll be driving). Thanks again, Michael
-- Donna & Duane DeVoe Come Visit Lena, Illinois! http://www.villageoflena.com >>> MOdani@aol.com 04/11/02 11:52AM >>> Since people weren't required by law to report births and deaths before 1907 many did not. I've encountered entries where mom and dad were apparently in town one day and decided to register 8 or 10 at once. It's logical that other families decided it wasn't worth the effort. Also, I've noticed that my Catholic relatives (who immigrated from non-Catholic countries) were much slower to register births and deaths -- I'm not sure why. Also, if there was no property to transfer or pension to apply for, registering a death might not seem as important. OR, as I firmly believe, those relatives knew someone would be looking and decided to play hide-and-seek. Monica Odani Wife and I have visited all but 4 of WI. court houses. We did this when we heard there were some years when the state did not require counties to forward vitals to the state vitals office in Madison. County Deeds offices still should have a record of vital happenings in their county. I've worked with them before online. I sent in several requests and they emailed me whether they had the info or not and if they did then I'd give them my address so that they could send me the copies..... HI: When coming to Grant Co. the Karman Lib. on the UN. Wis. at Platteville is the best place. The court house in Lancaster is the next best followed by the Cunningham Museum also in Lancaster. It is usually closed the phone number is on the door. The Sinnawa convent is another good place if you have Catholic relatives. It is hard to get an appointment. The history room in the Galena Public Library in Galena, Il. In the early days this was the cultural center. This is a 20-30 minute drive from Platteville. In the other direction Dodgeville and Minneral Point in Iowa Co. are good locations for research. They are 30 to 40 minutes from Platteville. Your best central point is Platteville and branch out from there. If you have relatives in Lafayette Co., Darlington is 25 minutes away. The museum, library and court house are in walking distance of each other. Michael, Last autumn I went down to Karmann Library and spent a partial day there. The staff was wonderful and helped me with things which had previously been troublesome. I even got to hold the naturalization records I was seeking which were approaching 100 years old! The public library in town holds a series of microfilms so you may want to stop there and get a copy of the list. It is very near the University library. http://www.weld.lib.co.us/plattevil.html or http://platteville.wi.us/localinfo/library.html In the end, I came away with more than I planned to find. Records for relatives who lived there for a time before moving to St. Paul, old newspaper stories about uncles and more work than I will ever be able to complete. It was a very rewarding trip and I plan to go back when the weather warms up a little more and the spring flowers are up. Happy trails. I've only been able to find the death records and obits of my great grandparents Wencil and Mary DVORAK.....and the death record and obit of their son Joseph......I'm hardly getting anywhere now.....i know my grandpa's story but don't have his birth record or his brothers Vandy or Frank......only thing I have on Vandy or Frank is a photo of Frank's gravesite and a mention in Vencil's obit that Vandy was one of the surviving sons at that time living in Janesville.....when his mother died, Vandy is not listed as one of the surviving sons....so I'm assuming he died between the years of 1927 and 1931......but there is nothing on him......Lancaster is where the courthouse is in Grant County, I'm sure of that ----- Original Message ----- From: Michael Hampton To: WIGRANT-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, April 11, 2002 12:59 PM Subject: [WIGRANT] Short visit to Grant County Hello List, I'm going to be coming home to Grant County for about a week (I leave either Friday or Saturday) and I was wondering if anyone could suggest some "not to miss" genealogy sites. Hi Michael, When we went to Lancaster we stayed at Klondyke Secluded Acres Campground. It was great! Their phone: 608 723-2844. They opened April 2nd. As far as the Karmann Library, it's at the Univ. of Wis. and just follow the brown signs, they will take you right to it. It's a small town so you won't get lost. Have you phoned regarding hours? They are limited but once in awhile staff may be there more hours (608 342-1719). I believe hours right now are: Sun. & Mon. 1pm to 5pm, Tue. 1pm to 9:00pm, Wed. through Fri. 1:00pm to 5:00pm. "A tip" the microfiche readers and printers are better upstairs in the library and they allow you to go up. I do have contact info for Kathleen Wolfe: Phone 608 763-2406. She is very helpful and has helped us quite a bit. Happy hunting. Helene Ennor Searching all things Ennor, Lemke, Kristovich, Durgan

Hi Michael, There is a city-run park (with RV parking allowed) on the northeast side of Platteville, called Moundview Park. I think you have to go to the Police Station to pay a small fee? I believe the information is posted on the restroom door. Happy hunting! I have been following the thread on the United Methodist Church. Although I haven't done a great amount of research on the church, I did stumble on to a division of the Church that looks to be beneficial to use in the future. It's called "The General Commission on Archives and History". GCAH for short. I've included a link here: http://www.gcah.org/ They have an online catalog which includes, at the very least, a partial inventory of their manuscript collection. I hope this helps.
