    1. [WIGRANT] VanTuylTaylor/Wilsey
    2. Thanks to everyone who answered my plea and sent some info. I thought this would be the best way to answer all of you, so if you aren't connected with these families, please delete this now. 1. Is there a Pioneer certificate from the county, itself? I would rather have that than one from the state if there is. 2. Elizabeth Van Tuyl TAYLOR divorced her husband in PA in 1847 and moved to Grant Co., with her five children, and her oldest daughter Lydia (Taylor) WILSEY, her husband Jabez and their two small children. The moved was between June 1851 when her father who had been living with her died and Jan 1853 when Jabez WILSEY Jr. was born in WI. 3. ELizabeth had several older sisters who married and moved to IL, but I don't know of anyone in MI. Van Tuyl isn't a very "spread out" or prolific name, so they probably are related to the immigrant Otto VAN TUYL who came to N.Y. about 1660 and owned a lot of property there and in N.J. 4. I don't know of an Allen TAYLOR, but Noah and Amanda TAYLOR were her brother and sister-in-law and they, too are buried in the Dodge Cemetery, close to Elizabeth, her son, Alexander and grandson Jabez WILSEY, JR. 5. They moved after Elizabeth's father died in June 1851 in Tunkhannock, PA. I don't know how soon or where they stopped (Maybe in IL. to visit with her sisters), but they were in Grant Co., where Jabez JR., was born in Jan 1853. He died in Sept 1853 and is the one buried next to Elizabeth in Dodge. 6. She must have had the property in Bloomington in the late 1850's or early 1860's She rented her house when she couldn't afford to keep it up herself, especially after Lorenzo joined the army in 1861. Her only source of income was her alimony (which she never got) and what her children, principally Lorenzo (died in AndersonvilleGA., Civil War prison in 1864) That's why she tried to get his pension, and those records are in the Nat. ARchives. 7. I spent the day with Mrs. Mumm and Mrs. Hudson in 1979 when we were passing through Grant Co.. They drove me all over the area and showed me most of what was available, and I visited the courthouse the following day, and found Elizabeth's will with the probate and the description of the property, but for some reason, I didn't get the date of the sale to Elizabeth. I don't know who owned the property prior to her buying it, but at the time of probate, it was worth $550.00. 8. I don't know who the McCamish family waas, but the HUDSON children are ELizabeth's grandchildren from Bryron and Melvina (TAYLOR) HUDSON. Who are also buried in Dodge. 9. The William WRIGHT's (Lydia TAYLOR) were also related to Elizabeth. They were her brother and sister-in-law. Lydia was her husband's sister, and they moved to Grant Co in the early 1840's. At least that's the earliest I have land records for them. They too are buried in Dodge. Don't know if any of this helps anyone tell me any more or not. I've corresponded with Mrs. Jentz, and she gave me the info on the Dodge Cem., and Mrs. Mumm has done some things for me, too., although not recently. Please give all the ladies my best wishes. And the same goes to all those who wote to make suggestions. Please let me know about the GRANT CO., certificate. Thanks you all again for your help. Earlene Hutsell OK1WE1@aol.com

    3. I'm hoping that someone may have access to the following Wisconsin Vital Records Death Index: Name: Mary Ann Dolan Death Date: 02 Nov 1884 County: Grant Volume: 01 Page: 0117 Reel: 030 Image: 0308 Sequence #: 084618 This may be my Mary Ann who was born in Vernon County, Franklin township, in 1855. She was on the 1870 census at age 14 with her father, Patrick, and 4 siblings, but I haven't been able to locate her after that. Any help at all will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. 2. David W. Taft
    3. Earlene, I presume you are trying to qualify for the Pioneer Certificates from the Wisconsin State Genealogical Society. Getting the proper documentation can be a problem. Unless Elizabeth came to Grant Co. as a widow, I would think that any land was probably originally purchased in his name and then went to her upon his death. Was Wakeman Taylor her husband? (No, I'm not related, but that seems correct per the Grant Co. marriage records for Alexander and 2 other daughters and a RootsWeb query I spotted.) Unfortunately, I can't find any purchases from the Government for either. I suspect Elizabeth probably purchased her property from a local owner. If that is the case, you would need to research the Grant Co. land records (see below). I believe they are available on microfilm from the LDS if you have a local Family History Center available. When/where did he die? What where the names and birth dates of her other children? If I located the right one, Elizabeth seemed to have moved around/lived with her various children. From what I can tell, she didn't arrive in Grant Co. or WI until after the 1850 census. I doubt she owned land until the 1870's or 80's. The first sign of her and the children was in 1855. This is what I came up: 1855 State Census, Cassville, Grant, WI, Pg. 3, 1 Jun 1855 Alex Taylor, 2 males, 2 females living in household James L. Taylor (2 households away), 3 males, 3 females in household "Dabes" Wilsey (next door to Alex), 3 males, 2 females in household The 1855 census only lists head of household and number of males and females in the home. 1860 Census, Glen Haven, P.O. Oliver's Mills, Grant, WI, Pg. 181, 28 Jun 1860, Household 571 Alexander Taylor, 25, Farmer, $1000, $300, PA Mary A., 22, WI Terr. Charles, 1, WI Elizabeth, 50, NY 1870 Census, Beetown, Grant, WI, Pg. Household 119 Perry McCamish, 43, Miner, $400, $200, IL Josephine McCamish, 34, Keeping House, IL Daniel McCamish, 19, Miner, WI William McCamish, 15, At Home, WI Emma Hudson, 16, At Home, WI Fanny Hudson, 11, At Home, WI Lydia Hudson, 9, At Home, WI Hyrum Hudson, 7, At Home, WI Katie Hudson, 5, At Home, WI Elizabeth Taylor, 60, Keeping House, $800, $150, NY The Hudson children appear the be the children of Byron and Malvina (Taylor) Hudson. It would seem that Malvina died and somehow the children and Elizabeth ended up in this McCamish household. What is really odd is that Byron is still alive, living nearby, with yet other McCamish children. 1870 Census, Beetown, Grant, WI, Pg. 4, Household 47 Byron Hudson, 38, Farmer, $2000, $450, PA Mary McCamish, 12, At Home, WI Alice McCamish, 10, At Home, WI Richard McCamish, 10, At Home, WI Levi McCamish, 8, At Home, WI George McCamish, 5, At Home, WI Emma McCamish, 2, At Home, WI 1880 Census, Bloomington, Grant, WI, Pg. 27D Elizabeth Taylor, 70, Keeping House, NY, NY, NY Fanny Hudson, 21, WI, PA, PA Lydia Hudson, 19, WI, PA, PA Here again she has 2 of her grandchildren living with her. I have no idea where you might find records from the Dodge Cemetery. I'm not sure when lots were actually sold. I think many early cemetery's were kind of on a first come, first serve basis (so to speak). You might want to contact the Cemetery chairperson for the Grant Co. Genealogical Society: Helen Jentz, 955 Williams St., Platteville WI 53818. If all else fails, you might want to hire a local researcher in Grant Co. to do some courthouse research for you. That is where the land records would be found as well as probate and court records. If Elizabeth's husband died in Grant Co., did he have a probate file? A good and inexpensive local researcher I have used before is: Lavon Hall, 440 S Harrison, Lancaster, WI 53813 Since Lavon lives in Lancaster, she has easy access to the courthouse. She doesn't have e-mail, so you will need to send her a letter. Provide her as many details (names, dates, places, etc.) as you can. That will really help you out. She used to charge $5 per hour with a $20 retainer. That is a great deal. You might send her a request with a self addressed stamped envelope to get her current fees and a better idea of what she can do for you. Another Grant Co. fee researcher is: Helen Mumm, 13272 Bluff, Glen Haven, WI 53810 She isn't that far from Lancaster either. Not sure if any of this will help you our or not. Dave Taft Arlington, TX

    1. Re: [WIGRANT] Allan Taylor - pre 1868 Paris farm
    2. Earlene, I don't know if he would be related to your folk, but the Bio of Mary Shinoe mentions her buying Allan TAYLOR's farm in Paris after the Civil War. As I see it on the plat map, it's a parcel in the lowest portion, just right of center of section 4 of Paris Twp. If the section were drawn up in 16 plats and numbered as most townships are/were (starting northeast numbering westward then the next row south numbered west to east, etc., in a serpentine pattern) it would be plat 15. Perhaps this Allan Taylor was the original homestead act land patent holder and would show up on a BLM search. Maybe this Allan TAYLOR property will prove to be connected, and hopefully lend more clues to your quest. Good Luck on your hunt! Di Kindet @ yahoo . com

    3. My cousin Dorothy Kluesner married Allan Taylor of Bloomington, WI. He also has a brother in Bloomington and I can only remember his nickname which is "Tinker". Bloomington is very small and everyone picks their mail up at the Post Office Zip 53804. You can send mail to either one at that Zip code. Incidentally Dorothy and Allan have a daughter named Elizabeth. When I was growing up there 50 some years ago there was another Taylor, nicknamed "Turkey" because he raised them. I'm not positive, but I think they were related. My parents retired to a home across the street from "Tinker" and his wife. They had a flock of pretty little girls. Give 53804 a try and mention my name. 3. Sorry Susan, Just got back and didn't have time to see LaVon. I still need to sit down with her regarding my Gates and Hampton families. All, I had a wonderful time at the Karmann Library. You're all right, the staff is very helpful. I went away with some answers, but even more questions. I need another trip soon, but classes are starting again and I won't be able to travel again until fall. RE: the municipal park in Platteville. Very nice (water and electrical hookups), but a bit confusing as to how to pay. You now pay at the Parks and Recreation Dept. They only take cash or checks (no credit cards). There is a taxi service that will get you to and from the library for little money. Still need to spend some time in Lancaster, maybe next trip. Thanks again for all the help. 1. Re: [WIGRANT] MEIGHAN or Meighey
    2. This family was probably MEIGHAN, as most other online data would suggest. They are a collateral of mine, so the initial question was more for purposes of how to include them in my genealogy program. I'm going with MEIGHAN for now, with a notation of the MEIGHEY spelling. Some queries produced Civil War records with notations of the name spelled "Meehan" as I'd have suspected, along with others of MEAGHAN and MEIGHEN--not much variation. I saw a lot of these folks in Lafayette County, next door, so since it looks like a good number of KITTOe (my direct line) folk were also there and in Iowa County, I'm going to snoop around those locations and see if anyone recognizes the MEIGHAN group as well. I've learned so much from collateral lines, that I stick to them very closely now. Sometimes those descendants end up with a gold mine of information on our direct lines. Thanks for everyone's input!
