    1. Re: [WIGRANT] Birth Records & JULIUS
    2. Bev, As far as I know, no Grant County death records are listed online, other than Ancestry.com, WI Deaths 1820-1907 (membership fee; minimal info--& seem to be from a state index, in which mainly only later deaths show up?). There are some cemeteries which have been transcribed by the WSGS. They will send copies for small fee, and the cems are listed on their site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wsgs/index.htm I should have given you the full path to the WIGenWeb archive I posted earlier. On the site for which Robin Kaspar has devoted generous volunteer time and efforts to help us have an online reference and repository; the "Genealogy Links" page on the Grant County USGenWeb site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigrant/links.htm View carefully, as you scroll down and find all kinds of goodies. Some you have to dig/click further for, than others. Just short of mid page is where the links to the births to 1891 are found. Got to go prepare for relative's visit to our town. Good Hunting! 2. Kin, thank you for the website for Birth/Vital records. Now since I am a greedy little person (boy, would my family laugh at that description), is there also a similar list for Deaths. I know that my GGgrandmother JULIUS died in 1884 and that GGgrandfather JULIUS died in 1886, but have nothing to verify it. Thanks for your help. Bev

    1. [WIGRANT] Interlibrary loan--an overlooked resource
    2. Robin Hoff Kaspar
    3. I want to share my experiences with the local interlibrary loan department. I live in a state where none of my ancestors ever lived so I have no need for local research. I live in the capital city and work downtown, very near to the state library. Since all of my research is in distant places, I have discovered what a help the interlibrary loan department is. In fact, I'm on a first-name basis with them now :-) Need an obituary? The ILL was able to obtain the microfilm of a Pennsylvania newspaper from 1940 and I found the obit I was looking for in two minutes. It turns out that I was told the wrong date of death by a few days and if I had asked someone to do a lookup, they probably wouldn't have been able to find it and I would have assumed it didn't exist. Need a book? I had learned of the existence of a family history book of a family that had origins in Baltimore. I could buy the book from the author or I could try and get it from ILL. This time I was not 100% successful; for some reason none of the libraries holding the book would let it go. This happens sometimes, I guess. So the ILL guy called me and I asked if they would send copies of the handful of pages I needed. And they did. At no charge. I have requested and received books written in German by German authors. I didn't know if these books would be available in U.S. libraries but they were. The point I'm trying to make is that the ILL dept. has access to the whereabouts of books and microfilms all over the country, including university libraries. Some libraries charge to loan things, all you have to do is specify a cap on the amount you're willing to pay, or I just ask them to advise me of the charge. Most of the stuff I've gotten has been free. I'd like to hear your experiences with your local ILL. If you haven't tried it yet, go talk to them and see what they can do for you. 1. Re: [WIGRANT] Re: Birth Record - JULIUS
    2. Beverly, Look at the page containing births to 1891 in Grant County, from David Taft / GCGS's donation to the USGenWeb Archives, here: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/wi/grant/vitals/births/to1891/birthil.txt There is an Emil JULIUS, born 1887 in Lancaster. Might be your Adolph's sibling or cousin? There are very few birth record transcriptions from earlier than the 1880s and the earliest one on that particular page is 1871, another page 1866. I still don't recall reading a good explanation of how the State of Wisconsin Bureau of Health/Vital Statistics obtained the earliest records. Some states say their early records come only from county offices. Then, from whence did the county acquire their records? I have to approach this same issue myself, and think once I've figured out which LDS microfilms to view, if unsatisfactory results are found, will have to hunt down first the County records, then the Church records for both birth-baptism and marriage information on early Grant County ancestors. My guess at this point is that the later, if surviving and accessible, will be the best source. Good Hunting! 2. David W. Taft
    3. Sandra, You probably have all that is available. If these came from the State records, they are probably printed in large ledger books. I haven't seen how the county recorded them, but they probably contain the same information. Back then I don't believe the courthouse actually issued paper certificates to the families for deaths, but rather recorded them in books in the official county records. 2. Kin Detect
    3. Thanks Mary & others who responded, I've been informed which records contain parents of couples, thank goodness, as I'd not remembered seeing reference to that info in anything other than original sources. Now here's my quandary: I'm trying to justify and clear up source notations on old notes and files, and now think it better to order a film or book, rather than try to get a single original record, BUT... I get flustered when I try to compare and understand the various record sources and their descriptions: FHC Library Catalog; the GCGS Publications; and the SHS of Wisconsin holdings. That along with the idea that some materials are available at County level which are not at State repositories, gets me confused as to where to turn next in my hunt. It seems the FHL Catalog (vol. 1A-6B; Call# 977.577 V28m) lists the same indexes of marriages which are offered from the GCGS, but I don't see one there which corresponds to the second one, noted below (--). I wonder if the following GCGS offerings contain enough differing material, and if the second is a complete transcription with index, as it appears (not to mention missing date reference). - Marriages for Grant County, Wisconsin Index 1A: Earliest to 1859 105pp paperback. Cross indexed for bride and groom. --Earliest Marriages of Grant County, Wisconsin 104pp paperback. Cross indexed for bride, groom and witnesses. Then to further my consternation, I wonder if an index isn't necessary at all, if the LDS filmed the originals from the Bureau of Vital Statistics, and put films in order of years, by county (not sure how therein they are ordered...date, alpha, location, etc.), might I be more productive and cost efficient to order at least one film I'm interested in, check for spelling variants myself, and extract what I can for related families and perhaps some list members while I have it? (e.g., Marriages, 1850-1858 - Film #1266983 ) <sigh> Hoping for clarity that comes from time, determination and good advice from the wise perspectives of more experienced researchers. Thanks Kindly, KinDet @ yahoo.com -- --- WIGRANT-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > From: "Mary Thiele Fobian" <metaphor@mbay.net> > The index (available at ancestry.com) of "Wisconsin > Marriages, 1835-1900" lists the marriage thus: > RISTER, HENRY __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? L Collins was my g-grandfather and was married to Roxey Chase Works prior to my G-grandmother Lucy Collins. 2. Can anyone tell me if I send for Death Certificates if they are going to contain the exact same information that the Death Records have? I sent for copies of the Death Records for my great Grandparents and received them but they did not contain the information on the parentage of my great Grandparents, nor did they contain the maiden name of my great Grandmother. I understand that who ever supplied the information may not have known those things, I am just questioning whether the information is copied verbatim. Thank you for your help. Sandra
